Brits Rising Star winner Myles Smith says recognition feels ‘incredible'
The singer, 26, is nominated at the Brit Awards for best new artist, best pop act and song of the year for hit single Stargazing.
He was announced last year as the Brits Rising Star winner and follows in the footsteps of Florence And The Machine, The Last Dinner Party and Adele in receiving the accolade, which is given to the artist the music academy believes will have the biggest impact in the coming year.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's ceremony, he told the PA news agency: 'It feels incredible, for me, such a new artist, being able to have the recognition so early on, it's been really reassuring.
'But also just a nice feeling to know you're going in the right direction. So for me, it's like a big tick to go OK, we're moving the right way.'
He added: 'I definitely think it's such a difficult time for artists, especially ones discovering themselves, because everything's so fast-paced, and the expectation put on artists to know who they are, what they want to sound like and where they want to go, is incredibly difficult.
'And so just slowing things down, putting in the right infrastructure, and helping support growth and development behind the scenes is what I think needs to happen more for sure.'
Among the celebrities gracing the red carpet were TV presenter Davina McCall, US pop singer Sabrina Carpenter, DJ Calvin Harris, TV presenter Maya Jama and singer Calum Scott.
Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown wore a metallic chain mail-style gown while Charli XCX embraced the gothic with a sheer black dress.
YouTube star and rapper KSI said his song of the year nomination for single Thick Of It, featuring US rapper Trippie Redd, is the 'cherry on top' after being 'clowned' for the track.
He told PA: 'When I released the song, I was getting clowned.
'People online were streaming the song saying, like, 'What is this? This isn't good', but people kept listening to it. People kept streaming it.
'And then as soon as I got that Brit nomination, cherry on top man, it just brought a smile to my face.'
Asked if he would like to add anything else to his repertoire, having pursued amateur boxing as well as a music career, he said he would like to 'try acting' and get involved with an action comedy TV series or film.
Elsewhere, singer Ella Henderson said there had been an 'incredible storm' of music from female artists recently.
The Ghost singer, 29, is nominated for song of the year for her single Alibi featuring Rudimental.
US singer Teddy Swims, who is performing at the ceremony, looked as though he was being swamped by children's toys when he hit the red carpet.
His song, Lose Control, which peaked at number two in the UK singles chart, is nominated for international song of the year.
Another singer who made an impression on the red carpet was nominated star Jade Thirlwall, who wore what looked to be a wedding dress.
Charli XCX could win big this year as she is nominated five times – for artist of the year, best pop act, best dance act, song of the year for her hit Guess featuring US superstar Billie Eilish, and a coveted album of the year nod for Brat.
Musicians vying with her for artist of the year include London rapper Central Cee, pop star Dua Lipa, multi-instrumentalist and DJ Fred Again, indie rock star Sam Fender, and remix artist and DJ Jamie xx.
She will face tough competition for the album of the year gong as she goes up against Dua Lipa's chart-topping third album Radical Optimism, Ezra Collective's third release Dance, No One's Watching, and Songs Of A Lost World by The Cure, the rock band's first release in 16 years.
It is the first time The Cure, also nominated in the group of the year category, have been recognised at the Brit Awards for more than three decades.
They won best British video in 1990 and best British group in 1991, with their last nomination in 1993 in the video category for Friday I'm In Love.
Song of the year nominees this year include Backbone by Chase And Status and Stormzy, Training Season by Dua Lipa, and Stargazing by rising star winner Myles Smith.
The new Beatles song Now And Then, which was written and sung by John Lennon and later finished by Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Ringo Starr using overdubs and guitar tracks by George Harrison, has also been nominated in the category.
It is the band's first Brits nod since 1977, the year of the first Brit Awards, when they won best British album for Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and were nominated for British single of the year for She Loves You.
The ceremony will feature performances from artists including Messy singer Lola Young, US pop star Carpenter, jazz quintet Ezra Collective, and R&B singer Jorja Smith.
Last year Raye made history when she secured six gongs, the most by an artist in a single year.
The Brit Awards will be broadcast live on ITV1 from 8.15pm.

Charli XCX Hits Back at 'Boomer' Criticism of Autotune Use During Glastonbury Set: 'Yawn'
Charli XCX is hitting back at the 'boomers' critiquing her use of autotune during Saturday night's Glastonbury set. The British superstar started her raucous set at the U.K. musical festival with a burning Brat sign towering over her shoulder before obliging thousands of fans with album favorites like '365' and 'Von Dutch,' as well as old-school hits, including 'Party 4 u' and 'I Love It.' More from The Hollywood Reporter Meta Facing European Showdown on "Pay-or-Consent" Ad Model Bob Vylan Lose Visas, Dropped by UTA Following "Death to IDF" Chant at Glastonbury 'Squid Game' Creator Weighs in on American Spinoff Reports and Explains That Surprise Cameo She had the entire festival torn in two as Charli, performing on the Other stage, clashed with headliner Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts late in the evening. On Sunday, the singer posted to X (formerly Twitter) about getting comments that her performance was less than for using autotune. 'Really enjoying these boomer vibe comments on Glastonbury performance. It's super fascinating to me.' She continued in a series of posts: 'Like the idea that singing with a deliberate autotune makes you a fraud or that not having a traditional band suddenly means you must not be a 'real artist' is like, the most boring take ever. yawn sorry just fell asleep.' The 'Speed Drive' singer then stated she enjoys the discourse. '[In my opinion] the best art is divisive and confrontational and often evolves into truly interesting culture rather than being like kind of OK, easily understood and sort of forgettable.' She then thanked U.K. outlet The Guardian for the five-star review the publication gave her set. Some of the highlights from the set included Gracie Abrams — on Worthy Farm this weekend as a performer also — being selected as Charli's 'Apple' girl. 'I love you so much, Gracie,' she said as the U.S. singer blew kisses at the camera. At the end of the raucous performance, where Charli sipped white wine and splashed around in onstage rain, signage on either side of the stage thanked fans for their ongoing support. 365 Days of ‘Brat': How Charli xcx Cultivated a Pop Cultural Phenomenon Her Own Way
'It's hard being ahead,' Charli xcx declared at an early viewing party for her sixth studio album, Brat, last May, roughly a month before the record's debut. 'We're all ahead because everybody in here, like, gets it.' Flash forward a year, it's been exactly 365 days since Charli debuted the project that defined the summer of 2024 (a la 'Brat summer'), had everyone wanting to be a party girl and now unofficially defines the lime green color. A year later, it still feels like Brat summer still hasn't ended yet (perhaps because she's still touring the record this summer). More from The Hollywood Reporter Cynthia Erivo Gets Support From Oprah, Belts Out "Sometimes All You Need Is a Song" in Tony Awards Opening How Ticket Resellers Caused Drama at Miley Cyrus' 'Something Beautiful' Tribeca Film Premiere Miley Cyrus Says She Knows What Upcoming 12-Track Experimental Album "Feels Like" At this point, though, most know that the Essex singer-songwriter breach's into commercial success was a long-time coming. Of course, Charli broke out years ago, earning her first (and sole) No.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with she and Iggy Azalea's 'Fancy' in the summer of 2014. Coincidentally, the track debuted at the top of the charts dated June 7th, the same date that she released Brat a decade later. Brat went on to dominate the pop culture zeitgeist after its release, though the album's chart and streaming success didn't necessarily match its cultural impact. Before Brat arrived, Charli brilliantly arranged its release. First, there was 'Von Dutch,' released in February, followed up by a remix featuring A.G. Cook and influencer turned artist Addison Rae, which some didn't understand at the time. As Charli said before, 'it's hard being ahead,' giving an early peek into Rae's blossoming career that's now happening in real time (she dropped her debut album Friday, garnering lots of buzz in the chatter in the process) and, ironically, the moment Charli was about to have that summer. Charli built the album's hype further with the release of the single '360' and its adjoining music video, jam-packed with It Girl after It Girl. The widespread public may have not recognized its stars in Julia Fox, Gabbriette, Rachel Sennott, Chloë Sevigny and Alex Consani upon first glance, but it's likely you recognize their names now, a year later. While she began releasing tracks from the record, Charli catered to her fans, deemed 'Angels' (no, they're not called 'Brats'), with impromptu fan events. She played a pop-up at the Lot Garden in Brooklyn, where the Brat Wall was born and would later serve as the go-to hub for her to tease more aspects of Brat, including her collaboration with Lorde, and the deluxe album. When Brat finally arrived on June 7, it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, also landing at No. 2 on the U.K.'s official albums charts after being blocked by a string of U.K.-only re-releases of Taylor Swift's Tortured Poets Department. The charts, paired with the lyrics of 'Sympathy is a knife,' led eagle-eyed fans to believe the two pop singers were at odds. Charli put those speculations to rest, though she and Lorde later confirmed that 'Girl, so confusing' was indeed about the New Zealand songwriter. On the original version of the song, Charli sings about a muddled relationship with a friend over the years. Then, two weeks after Brat came out, the two artists dropped a new version of the song where they undoubtedly 'work[ed] it out on the remix.' There were also factors stoking the flames well beyond Charli's own intentions. Charli started yet another viral moment as she tweeted 'Kamala IS brat,' after Kamala Harris took over as the presumptive Democratic nominee, which led Harris' campaign to change its profile banner to match the 'brat' its aesthetic sparking a slew of newscasters pondering what exactly it meant to be 'Brat.' Long after the hype of the original Brat could have died down, Charli confirmed a fully remixed follow-up album in September, Brat and it's completely different but also still brat. There, she collaborated with mainstream successes in Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande, underground stars in Shygirl and BB Trickz and even her fiancé's band, the 1975. The remixed record's release, too, boosted Brat into the No. 1 spot on the U.K.'s official album charts. 'Guess,' with Billie Eilish became arguably the biggest track of the Brat era, with over 635 million streams on Spotify. Charli and Troye embarked on their Sweat Tour, which saw collaborators such as Eilish, Lorde, Addison, Kesha and Tate McRae join them for surprise performances on tour stops, further boosting the demand and desire to be embedded in the Brat lifestyle. In November, Charli received another wave of commercial success when she earned seven Grammy noms. Yes, she'd been nominated by the Recording Academy before, but she landed her first nods in coveted categories, including album of the year, and eventually went on to earn her first three Grammys while delivering her debut, quintessential Charli xcx-set at the 2025 awards ceremony. The Sweat Tour led to Charli announcing the Brat Tour, which initially consisted of five dates, two of which were set in Brooklyn. Demand for the tour, however, peaked, leading her team to add two more nights to the New York-based concert that eventually sold out. Then, she hosted Saturday Night Live, delivered buzzy sets during both weekends of Coachella this April, cameoed in Hulu's Overcompensating, headlined Primavera Sound (reprising Sweat Tour with Sivan by her side), announced her own Party Girl Festival in London this summer, and the list goes on. Currently, she's wrecked the 'Brat' imagery at her shows and on all of its digital art, scribbling the word out and making it look as though the cover is rotting. Brat is now bringing attention back to Charli's deeper catalog, as her 2020 track 'party 4 u' from How I'm Feeling Now is also having it's own moment, debuting for the first time on the Hot 100 last month, roughly five years after it released. The surge, boosted by its virality on TikTok, even led Charli to release an adjoining music video on its five-year anniversary. One year after Brat, and Charli is in demand as ever. At the end of her Coachella set during weekend one, she pondered the question in large text on a screen: 'does this mean that brat summer is finally over?' and addressed the existentialism of one of the biggest moments of her career potentially being over: 'i don't know who i am if it's over???' It's hard to imagine the era being truly done at least until she finally wraps up her shows later this Summer. Brat summer was never a period of time, it was an essence. Charli meticulously unified the wider pop cultural landscape, all the while being nothing but her authentic herself. And for an artist who's often been labeled ahead of the curve in pop, perhaps for Charli, Brat's biggest legacy will be as the record that finally helped the rest of us catch up. Charli xcx Burns ‘Brat' at Packed Glastonbury Set: 'I Don't Know Who I Am If It's Over'
Charli xcx and Neil Young had Glastonbury split in two Saturday night. Many of the festival fans were supporting Young and The Chrome Hearts on the Pyramid stage late in the evening, but as the performances clashed, an even bigger proportion wanted to witness the culture-defining Brat set. She continued delighting the thousands of fans watching on with some of her old school hits including 'party 4 u' and 'I Love It.' 'I know I'm meant to have a heart of stone,' the English star said from the Other stage, 'but this is very fucking emotional right now… Thank you so much, you're fucking cool as fuck. But not as cool as me, bitch!' Among some of the highlights from the set included Gracie Abrams — on Worthy Farm this weekend as a performer, also — being selected as Charli's 'Apple' girl. The Brit said: 'I love you so much, Gracie,' as the U.S. singer blew kisses at the camera. At the end of the raucous performance, where Charli sipped white wine and splashed around in on-stage rain, signage on either side of the stage thanked fans for their ongoing support. 'I think you've all proven to me that brat is forever,' one of them read, 'I don't know who I am if it's over.' Some were questioning the decision to put Charli on the Other stage while headliner Young, who drew a notably smaller crowd, was on the Pyramid slot. Other take-aways from this weekend's Glastonbury Festival, the U.K.'s crowning jewel of music festivals in Somerset, England, include The 1975's headline set — where Charli's partner and band drummer George Daniel graced the stage — as well as Lorde's surprise performance on the Woodsies stage Friday morning.
