Burgess outlines Sneyd's remarkable recovery plus post-match injury news

Yahoo11-05-2025
SAM Burgess says Marc Sneyd's remarkable return to the Warrington Wolves side was driven by the man himself.
Indeed, he called the fact he returned to the side less than three weeks after undergoing facial surgery 'an amazing act of human nature.'
The scrum-half suffered a fracture eye socket during the Round Nine victory over St Helens and as such seemed set to miss the Challenge Cup semi-final against Leigh Leopards.
Not only did he get himself back in the side, however, he made the difference on the day too with his nine points from the boot – courtesy of four goals from as many attempts and a drop goal – ultimately proved the difference in taking The Wire back to Wembley.

'He's a brilliant player and a very strong-willed bloke,' he said.
'He was the one who came to me and said 'I'm going to train this week and if I can train, I'll play.'
'It's so valuable having a guy around who drives standards like that – it's quite easy to follow a bloke who says things like that after having surgery a couple of weeks ago.
'I'm proud of Marc and for his family – I thought he was very good for us.'
When asked whether or not, medically speaking, Sneyd should have played, the Wire boss added: 'Well we all hear about these amazing acts of human nature…
'The brain is a powerful muscle and he made a commitment to himself to play, so he played.
'It was an easy decision to pick him – there's always an element of risk but it's paid off.'
Sneyd was not the only Warrington player who returned to the side – winger Matty Ashton and centre Toby King were also making their comebacks having sat out the Magic Weekend loss to Wigan Warriors.
However, Ashton was one of three players who were forced off injured during the 21-14 victory at the Totally Wicked Stadium as he was replaced by Arron Lindop in the first half.
Matty Ashton was forced off injured during the first half (Image: Richard Sellers/PA Wire) Josh Thewlis then failed a head injury assessment following a head-on-head collision with Leigh forward Owen Trout – an incident Burgess was critical of the handling of by the match officials – while Lachlan Fitzgibbon also had to be replaced due to a recurrence of a rib issue.
Thewlis will now definitely miss next weekend's trip to Wakefield Trinity under concussion protocol while Burgess cast doubt on Ashton and Fitzgibbon's chances of being fit.
'Thewlis failed his HIA. I'd love a bit of clarity on the rules with that – it's on report and it's head-on-head, my player's knocked out,' he said.
'I don't know if the rules have changed but I'd love some clarity from Phil Bentham (RFL head of match officials) and his team on that.
'I heard (St Helens head coach) Paul Wellens talking about it, (Catalans Dragons head coach) Steve McNamara was talking about it yesterday so I'm not the only coach talking about it but there's limited input and conversation on it.
'It's hard for me to then lead as a coach not knowing exactly what the rules are. It's hard to work it out.
'Fitzy is in a bit of pain – he's got some rib problems so he might need a couple of weeks.
'Tashy is a knee issue and we're not quite sure what it is.
'The first reports aren't too bad so let's think in a few weeks' time he'll be ready to play.'

Danny Walker's promising recovery update with 'best-case scenario' revealed

Danny Walker will soon be available to Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess again (Image: Alex Whitehead/ DANNY Walker has issued a promising update on his recovery from injury as he closes in on a return to the Warrington Wolves side. Having been struck down at the end of April as part of an unprecedented injury crisis this year, the hooker appears to be next in line for a comeback as he nears the end of his rehabilitation following knee surgery. Advertisement In the immediate short-term, The Wire's focus will be on making sure their season is still alive when their number nine becomes available again as Walker outlined the 'best-case scenario' for his return. 'I'm doing alright and my recovery has gone really well. Hopefully I've only got three or four weeks left now,' he told the Warrington Guardian. 'I'm back running and I've got another running session for Thursday, so everything is going well so far. 'We're looking at the Leigh game after the break – that would be the best-case scenario I think. 'It's just about pushing it – it's definitely doable but we'll see.' Advertisement It was an injury that ticked off an unwanted career-first for the 26-year-old Warringtonian, who has not featured since helping his hometown club beat St Helens in Round Nine. Walker has not featured since the Round Nine victory over St Helens (Image: John Baldwin Photography) For that game and the defeat at Leigh Leopards before it, Walker had been moved to stand-off after George Williams had suffered an ankle injury before he too was struck down. 'It was a lateral meniscus injury. It's meant to be a 16-week recovery, but we've got some great physios that do a lot of good stuff to get that period down,' he said. 'It's a weird one as I don't really remember doing it. Advertisement 'I just remember training on the Wednesday before Magic Weekend and feeling something in my knee. 'They sent me for a scan and I was just expecting a little tear on something, but I'd done enough to need a big operation. 'It may have started in the Saints game the week before or even before that, but we're still not sure. 'It felt a little bit sore in the Saints game but I just went on with it, but I knew something wasn't right leading up to Magic. 'This was my first ever surgery from a rugby injury. I was a bit gutted about it but it's not been a bad innings having got to this stage without having needed anything like that. Advertisement 'I've done little things here and there but this has been my first big lay-off. It will make me a better player and a better person, I think.' As everyone of a Warrington persuasion knows all too well, Walker has had plenty of company in the treatment room at different stages. Williams, Matty Ashton, Marc Sneyd, Matt Dufty and Oli Leyland have all had significant injuries, as have youngsters Leon Hayes, Cai Taylor-Wray, Arron Lindop and Adam Holroyd. Walker, Ashton, Leyland and Hayes were forced to sit out the opportunity to play at Wembley in the Challenge Cup Final, which The Wire lost agonisingly to Hull KR. Advertisement 'You never want a big injury list, but having a lot of company in rehab does help you especially around games like Wembley,' Walker said. 'For myself and Matty Ashton – we like to think we'd have been out there playing had we not been injured but we were glad to have each other there. 'It's difficult to sit and watch games like that. 'We've all been competing with each other on weights and things like that – Cai Taylor-Wray is another one who is going to come back so much better as he's put on a lot of size, so fair play to him. 'It's been so hard to watch. I wear my heart on my sleeve so I have really struggled watching. Advertisement 'I feel every emotion watching, probably more than I would do playing. 'You just want to be out there helping your teammates out, especially as things haven't been going as well and the boys have been a bit down in the dumps. 'They've been working their socks off, they got a good win at the weekend and hopefully that will build confidence leading into this next block. 'Believe it or not, I don't think we've been too far away on certain things. It's moments where we've been losing it, but we won those at the weekend. 'That's what we've got to keep doing as we've got no second chances now and it's all go.'

UNC class of 2026 quarterback commit adds fourth star on 247Sports

Will Travis Burgess earning the starting job during Year One at UNC? The North Carolina Tar Heels are quietly building one of the top 2026 recruiting classes across college football – and continue adding talent seemingly every day. UNC's 2026 class is highlighted by four separate 4-star recruits: in-state edge rusher Zavion Griffin-Haynes, defensive tackle Trashawn Ruffin, safety Jamarrion Gordon and quarterback Travis Burgess. North Carolina has 20+ recruits in its next class, which should continue growing, particularly if there's on-field success in Chapel Hill this fall. Burgess, who plays at Grayson High School in Loganville (Ga.), will join a 2026 Tar Heels quarterback room that includes 2025 signee Bryce Baker and South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez. As Burgess prepares to play his final football season before arriving at UNC, he recently gained some good news, earning a fourth star on his 247Sports recruiting profile. Burgess is currently the 16th-ranked quarterback nationally – and the 27th-ranked player overall in Georgia. 247Sports called Burgess, who wowed at the Elite 11 finals, "One of the most impressive players in Los Angeles – and (he) was constantly able to turn heads with his ball placement." As mentioned previously, Burgess will join Baker and Lopez in North Carolina's 2026 QB room. Baker is a freshman – and there's a strong likelihood he stays in Chapel Hill for Year Two, given the fact he gave the Tar Heels one of their earliest, class of 2025 commitments. Lopez will enter his redshirt sophomore season this fall, competing with Baker and Johnson for the starting job. If Lopez wins the starting gig and plays well during his first year as a Tar Heel, he should return in 2026. Burgess is a major recruiting victory for UNC, choosing it over the likes of more successful programs in Wisconsin and Auburn. Can Burgess be the next great North Carolina quarterback?
