Spotlight on streetlights remains as 12 000 repaired in June
Over 31 days from May 26 to June 25, City energy teams fixed close to 12 000 streetlights from a total of 35 900 energy-related requests.
'Vandalism, theft and illegal connections across the metro continue to impact turnaround times as damaged infrastructure often needs to be entirely replaced, which could take many hours or even days in some cases," said mayco member for Energy, Xanthea Limberg
"We have various interventions to reduce the risk of these crimes, but as always, we need the help of our residents to report suspicious activity of their neighbourhood power infrastructure.

CoCT's JP Smith says 700 new 'neighbourhood police officers' trained to have multitude of skills
CAPE TOWN - City of Cape Town (CoCT) Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said the 700 new "neighbourhood police officers" were being trained to have a multitude of skills. Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis recently joined Smith at the city's Observatory College, where the officers were in their final stages of training. READ: CoCT's 'neighbourhood policing' initiative to see metro police officers deployed in every ward Smith explained some of the training the officers had to endure. "The candidates completed an 18-month-long training programme which included traffic officer training, metro police officer training, which included firearm competency, as well as specialised training which included our neighbourhood safety officer training, evidence-based policing, additional tactical training." Smith said the officers were also taught how to use the city's electronic devices. "Officers were also put through their paces using the city's cutting-edge firearms training simulator. Officers will be assigned EPIC hand-held devices for digital coordination and reporting of offences as part of our computer-aided dispatching system." Smith said that five officers per ward would be deployed across Cape Town in spring.

Spotlight on streetlights remains as 12 000 repaired in June
In line with the energy efficiency strategy, the City is expanding its LED streetlight replacement programme with a R160m injection over the next three years. Why so many of Cape Town's street lights don't work
While Cape Town is often recognised for having better service delivery than other South African cities, a common frustration persists for many residents: non-functioning street lights. Between 26 May and 25 June 2025, the City's energy teams repaired nearly 12 000 faulty street lights. In spite of this effort, it represents only a portion of the 35 900 energy-related service requests that were logged during that period. According to the City of Cape Town, vandalism, cable theft, and illegal electricity connections are the leading causes of widespread street light failures across the metro. These problems are particularly costly, often requiring full replacements of damaged infrastructure – an intensive process that can take several hours or even days. 'We have various interventions to reduce the risk of these crimes, but as always, we need the help of our residents to report suspicious activity of their neighbourhood power infrastructure,' said the City's Mayco Member for Energy, Xanthea Limberg. The City's Energy Directorate also pointed to severe winter weather as a contributing factor. Persistent storms and intense rainfall throughout June contributed to a rise in reported outages. 'Wet and windy weather often increases the number of service requests,' added Limberg. 'It also slows down turnaround times as it is typically dangerous for our teams to do electrical work in those conditions.' The worst-hit area during this reporting period was Area East – which includes Helderberg, Oostenberg, Bloemhof, and Parow. Energy-related requests attended to in the Cape Town metro were as follows: EAST NORTH SOUTH Helderberg, Oostenberg, Bloemhof, Parow Vanguard, Mowbray, City, Atlantis Mitchells Plain, Wynberg, Gugulethu, Muizenberg 4 732 3 632 3 498 The City of Cape Town has asked residents to report suspicious behaviour to the City's Public Emergency Communication Centre (021 480 7700), and to remember that the SAPS remains the lead authority in crime prevention. For service requests, residents should first log a request online or phone 086 0103 089 (Option 3).
