Maa box office collection day 3: Kajol's mythological horror surpasses Himesh Reshammiya's Badass Ravikumar, nears Kangana Ranaut's Emergency

Kajol has scored probably the best opening weekend at the domestic box office of her career as a solo lead with Vishal Furia's mythological horror film Maa. It's left far behind her last theatrical release, Revathy's 2022 relationship drama Salaam Venky, which barely earned in single digits within its entire short-lived lifetime.
Maa earned Rs 6.75 crore on Sunday, its third day at the box office. This was a slight improvement on its earnings of Saturday at Rs 6 crore, a further spike from its opening day collection of Rs 4.65 crore. As per Sacnilk, the opening weekend earnings of Maa in India thus stand at Rs 17.40 crore.
In the process, it's not only become the highest grossing solo film of Kajol's career, but also surpassed several other Hindi releases of this year. Those include another horror movie, Sanjay Dutt-starrer horror comedy The Bhootnii (Rs 12.52 crore), Sohum Shah-starrer thriller Crazxy (Rs 14.03 crore), Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar-starrer romantic comedy Mere Husband Ki Biwi (12.25 crore), and Himesh Reshammiya-starrer musical action film Badass Ravikumar (13.78 crore).
The next goalpost for Maa are to beat the box office collections of Sonu Sood's directorial debut Fateh (Rs 18.87 crore) and Kangana Ranaut's period political drama Emergency (Rs 20.48 crore). If it beats Emergency, Maa will also emerge as the highest grossing Hindi film led by a female actor this year.
Maa comes from the world of Vikas Bahl's hit supernatural thriller Shaitaan last year, which starred Ajay Devgn, Jyothika, and R Madhavan. Produced by her husband Devgn, Kajol's mythological horror also stars Ronit Roy. Some action portions of the film, including the climax, have also been directed by Devgn.
Maa is facing stiff competition from the holdover release of the previous week, RS Prasanna's coming-of-age sports comedy Sitaare Zameen Par, which stars Aamir Khan and Genelia D'Souza among others. Also backed by Aamir Khan Productions, it's the spiritual sequel to the actor's 2007 directorial debut Taare Zameen Par.
After a 10-day run at the domestic box office, Sitaare Zameen Par has earned Rs 122.65 crore so far. In the process, it's come close to beating the lifetime domestic earnings of AR Murugadoss' action film Sikandar, starring Salman Khan and Rashmika Mandanna, which made Rs 129.95 crore in its lifetime this year.
Aamir's film is also inching closer to Akshay Kumar's Sky Force, which earned Rs 134.93 crore at the domestic box office this year. However, it still has miles to go before it can breach the developing box office collection of Kumar's other hit from this year — Tarun Mansukhani's whodunit comedy Housefull 5, which currently stands at Rs 195.09 crore, and is close to entering the Rs 200 crore club.

Starting this Friday, both Maa and Sitaare Zameen Par will face fresh competition from Anurag Basu's romantic anthology Metro… In Dino, which stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher, and Neena Gupta among others.

Kajol Reveals On-Set Disagreements With Ajay Devgn During ‘Maa': 'We Both Came Out...'

Last Updated: Kajol opens up on working with Ajay Devgn in Maa, tackling horror for the first time, and her personal rituals before filming. In a candid conversation on IMDb's original series Behind The Scenes, Kajol opened up about her experience working on Maa, the latest addition to Ajay Devgn's expanding Shaitaan universe. Directed by Vishal Furia and starring Kajol alongside Ronit Roy and Indraneil Sengupta, Maa marks Kajol's first foray into the horror genre—an unexpected turn for the actor best known for her iconic roles in drama and romance. While the film explores the realm of mythological horror with roots in the Kaali Maa and Rakta Beej legend, Kajol admitted she was never a fan of horror to begin with. 'I'm on the opposite spectrum of a fan really, as far as horror is concerned," she said. 'Earlier when I got a few scripts, the emphasis was always on the genre more than the story—and that always bothered me. Maa started out as a concept based on one of my favourite mythological stories. I'm a mythology buff, and this is a mytho-horror being attempted for the first time." The actor also touched upon the challenges of stepping into an unfamiliar cinematic space. 'The Green Screen and the VFX were the most challenging. The pitch of a horror film is driven by what you want the audience to feel, and that requires a bit of exaggeration, especially in performance. For someone like me, who prefers subtlety, that's a real shift. And of course, the action—no one knows how much physicality is involved in horror besides those acting in it." The interview took a personal turn when Kajol revealed what it was like collaborating with husband Ajay Devgn, who produced the film. 'There were no fights, but a few disagreements—which are pretty common between couples. Some were personal, some were not, but both ways, we both came out on top." She also shared the small but meaningful rituals she performs before starting any project. 'I always take God's name before leaving the house. If I'm starting a film, I run it by my mother and touch her feet for blessings. Ideally, I would love for her to be there on the first day of whatever I shoot." With Maa, Kajol not only explores new creative territory but also joins forces with her real-life partner to deliver a genre-defying story that blends mythology, emotion, and supernatural terror. The film is now streaming and continues to draw attention for its ambitious storytelling and unique premise. First Published:

‘Maa' review: Kajol's sheroic not-without-my-daughter act can't lift up this horror

Mothers are a resilient lot. Harm their kids, then be ready for a battle. In Maa, Kajol's maternal instincts face their toughest test as she contends with superstitions as well as a girl child-feasting, tree-residing monster who has eyes on her adolescent Ambika is an ordinary woman trapped in extraordinary circumstances, but then the film's title isn't just a nod to her but also to the powerful and dangerous deity who should not be messed with—Kali India's mythology and religious beliefs to craft a horror that's contemporarily relevant is a nifty idea that's been attempted before, but to do so frighteningly well is another thing altogether. Maa takes the tried and tested not-without-my-daughter formula and spins it round and round until audiences are left frustrated at the actions of scares begin when circumstances compel Ambika to travel to a cursed place and live in a mansion with a troubled past. It doesn't help that right behind it is a haunted jungle—a contrived convenience—where nary a villager dares to step. One of the constant critiques of the genre is that makers rely on the insatiable curiosity (read stupidity) of characters, in most cases female, to generate cheap thrills. When her child's (Roopkatha Chakraborty) sense of adventure sees her step into the dreaded jungle, maa has to step up and protect her child from the monster and his minions. A non-believer in the village's religious rituals, by the end she is part of Team Maa Vishal Furia has made a living out of developing feminist fables in the horror genre. After the two Chhorii films, which released direct on streaming, in Maa he gets to show off some of that big visual effects budget at his disposal. Maa's tree monster is a bit more elaborately created vis--vis the one in Munjya, though Furia never quite succeeds in stoking fear of the least one sequence brims with imaginative imagery in which both mother and daughter while trying to escape get attacked by possessed girls jumping onto their car. Where Maa appeals is in shining a light on the horrific practice of female infanticide and the taboos around periods that still persist in the time a typical tandav-trance rendition of Kali puja, with masks and wild dancing, unfolds, Maa is left with no room for suspense. The avenging mother takes on the asura to free her daughter from his clutches and the village from jungle raj. 'Maa hona kamzori nahin, shakti hai,' says Ambika as she name-checks Chamunda, Durga and her own name as women whose rage is their biggest weapon. Only it's less inspiring and more desperate display of shero worship. The makers, though, are convinced announcing a shaitaan horror to India Today Magazine- Ends
