FlySafair pilot strike looms amid deadlock over wages, leave

FlySafair pilots represented by the Solidarity trade union may strike in the coming days after salary negotiations hit a deadlock.
Safair confirmed on Wednesday that the deadlock will result in the issuance of a strike certificate, which will allow the pilots to take action.
FlySafair is the largest domestic airline in South Africa. Solidarity represents 210 FlySafair pilots - about two-thirds.
Solidarity said the potential industrial action comes after a large majority of the union's pilots rejected Safair's final multi-year wage agreement offer, which included a 5.7% salary increase along with some additional adjustments to compensation. The union wanted a 10.5% wage increase for 2025/2026, followed by a consumer price index (CPI) plus 4.5% increase for 2026/2027, and a CPI plus 4% increase for 2027/2028.
Speaking to News24, Solidarity deputy secretary-general Helgard Cronje said wage negotiations began in late April and continued into May before the dispute was declared. The wage increases were expected to come into effect on 1 July.
Said Cronje:
There is a lot of economic uncertainty, and a lot of pilots leave for international work. It is a difficult environment to work in. In SA, the demand is high, but the salaries are not as competitive compared to other regions [like the Middle East]. We know that FlySafair is a low-cost domestic airline, but it has gained a lot of market share in recent years.
The trade union said the company also introduced a new policy on leave days and days off, which pilots believe is detrimental to their quality of life. There was also a dispute over a new shift roster system.
Solidarity said it will finalise the strike rules with Safair on Thursday, under the guidance of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration.
Cronje said that it is likely that the first strike will take place next week.
Solidarity said that Safair is also in a separate negotiations process for cabin crew, with all indications suggesting that it may also be heading towards a dispute.
Kirby Gordon, FlySafair's chief marketing officer, said the airline has contingency plans in place to minimise disruptions.
'We are fully prepared to manage the situation responsibly, with contingency plans in place to ensure minimal disruption to our schedule and service. Customers can continue to book and travel with confidence.'
He said that the airline respects the right the strike certificate affords its pilots to strike, and the rights of their colleagues who choose to continue to work.
'We respect their right to raise concerns and remain committed to engaging in good faith to reach a constructive resolution that supports our people, our passengers, and the long-term viability of our business,' he said.

A September rate cut is back on the table after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell tried to temper expectations for easier monetary policy earlier this week. The CME Group's FedWatch tool shows a 66% chance that the Fed lowers its benchmark rate by 0.25 percentage point in September. That's up from just 37% on Thursday. The personal consumption expenditures index, or PCE, rose 0.3% in June from the previous month and 2.6% from June 2024. Core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy prices rose 2.8% on an annual basis. The annual increases were higher than analysts' expectations of a 2.5% increase for PCE and 2.7% rise for core PCE. Additionally, when measured at a monthly rate, Americans saw their income increase by 0.3%, or $71.4 billion. However, after taxes that increase in dollars dips to around $61 billion, and the value of the goods and services bought by or for American citizens, or personal consumption expenditures, also rose 0.3% to $69.9 billion. As for savings, residents held on to $1.01 trillion in personal savings in June, and when measured as a percentage of disposable income, those personal savings came in at 4.5%. Inflation was also evident via the consumer price index, or CPI, as that rose 0.3% for urban consumers increased 0.3% since June when seasonally adjusted, and 2.7% over the last 12 months not seasonally adjusted, despite dipping as low as 2.3% in April. The Fed continues to hold short-term interest rates steady at a range of 4.25% to 4.5% following its meeting earlier this week, with Fed Chair Jerome Powell citing earlier this month that the impact of President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariff strategy is the reason the Fed hasn't gotten back to cutting rates. Trump, who has been pushing for the Fed to lower rates, posted to Truth Social Thursday in regard to the Fed's hold, saying Powell "is costing our Country TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS," and called him a TOTAL LOSER."

Major cryptocurrencies have reversed overnight losses, with analysts asserting that Wednesday's Fed decision underscored President Trump's growing influence over the central bank, strengthening the long-term bullish case for crypto. The Fed kept the benchmark interest rate steady at 4.25% as expected, and Chairman Jerome Powell dampened prospects of renewed rate cuts from September, stressing that the central bank is focused on controlling inflation—not on government borrowing or home mortgage costs that Trump wants lowered. Powell's comments rocked the crypto market, with bitcoin (BTC) falling to $116,000. XRP, ether (ETH) and solana (SOL) also fell, shaking out leveraged bets from futures markets. These losses, however, have been reversed. As of the time of writing, BTC was trading at $118,400, with XRP and ETH changing hands at $ 0.00314 and $3,870, according to CoinDesk data. The CoinDesk 80 Index, a broader market gauge, hovered near 915 points, up 0.8% over the 24 hours. Jimmy Yang, co-founder of Orbit Markets, said that the overnight Fed decision revealed a threat to the Fed's independence. While the central bank held rates steady, two policymakers – Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman and Governor Christopher Waller, both appointed to the board by President Donald Trump - dissented, favoring a rate cut. Trump has repeatedly criticised Powell for keeping interest rates elevated and costing the United States billions of dollars. Note that both Wallet and Bowman have publicly advocated for rate cuts in recent weeks. "There are increasing concerns about the Fed's independence as two of Trump's appointees voted for a rate cut last night; this should strengthen the case for crypto in the long term," Yang told CoinDesk. He added that with no immediate rate cut in sight, the market could continue to trade largely directionless, awaiting fresh catalysts – the July CPI release. "CPI is likely to rise when the tariffs kick in over the next few months. Cryptocurrencies might sell off initially alongside broader risk assets. However, if inflation fears persist, crypto might rebound as a hedge narrative re-emerges, especially for bitcoin," Yang noted. Greg Magadini, director of derivatives at Amberdata, said that while the Fed's decision was in line with expectations, concerns about the Fed's independence linger. "The biggest looming question this year for the bond market is around Fed independence. Wednesday's decision helped the Fed defend its independence. Still, if Powell is fired or begins to cut rates too early, I expect hard assets (BTC, especially) to rally significantly. At the same time, inflation and bonds would likely lose considerable value," Magadini noted. "Today the U.S. credit markets rely on Fed independence." Magadini explained bond markets continue to price in long-term inflation, which weakens the case for rapid fire rate cuts to ultra-low levels, as desired by Trump. "We've seen long-bond yields rise a lot since Trump's election. 10s30s moved from 15bps to 55bps and 2s10s from 5bps to 45bps. This means the bond market continues to price in long-term inflation, especially given that "real yields" are historically positive... should inflation remain where it is today," Magadini said.
