Five Andhra cities win Swachh Awards 2024
Five municipal corporations from the State have been selected for awards across different population-based and special categories.
The awards will be presented by the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and the Minister for Power at a grand ceremony in New Delhi on July 17. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu congratulated the Municipal Department, Collectors, Municipal Commissioners, officers, sanitation workers, and citizens for AP's shining performance in the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024-25. 'These awards further highlight the impact of the Swachh Andhra Swarna Andhra Mission,' he said.
Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Ponguru Narayana will receive the awards on behalf of the State and the winning civic bodies. In the Super Swachh League Awards (Population Based Category), Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has been honoured in the category of cities with a population of over 10 lakh. Vijayawada Mayor Rayana Bhagyalakshmi said, 'This achievement has been made possible solely because of our citizens, sanitation workers, and staff.'

Representing Varanasi in Lok Sabha since 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set up an office there as a Lok Sabha MP, manned by seven-member staff. In the last over 11 years, the PM has visited this office only once, however, several ministers and other party leaders do visit the place. P Chidambaram CHENNAI: Former Union minister P Chidambaram on Sunday termed the reported move to add 6.5 lakh migrant workers from Bihar to the electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu as "alarming and illegal," prompting Election Commission to dismiss his claims as "misleading and baseless. " Chidambaram called Election Commission's SIR exercise in Bihar "an insult to migrant workers and a gross interference in the rights of the electorate in Tamil Nadu," a day after DMK and its allies opposed the poll body's decision to register migrant workers in the states of their domicile. "If a migrant worker's family has a permanent home in Bihar and continues to live there, how can the worker be considered permanently migrated to Tamil Nadu? How can he or she be enrolled as a voter in Tamil Nadu?" Chidambaram asked. "Therefore, a person originally belonging to Tamil Nadu but ordinarily residing in Delhi is entitled to be registered as an elector in Delhi. Similarly, a person originally from Bihar but ordinarily residing in Chennai is entitled to be registered as an elector in Chennai," Election Commission explained on X. Delhi Assembly Monsoon Session to run on 100% solar power in push for green energy
The Monsoon Session of the Delhi Assembly, beginning on Monday (August 4, 2025), will be powered entirely by renewable energy following the inauguration of a 500-kilowatt rooftop solar power plant by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on Sunday (August 3, 2025). This milestone makes the Delhi Assembly the first in the country to operate solely on solar energy. Speaking at the inauguration of the solar plant and the new e-Vidhan initiative, which aims to make the Assembly paperless, Mr. Meghwal said, 'Delhi Assembly will be the first where sustainability, self-reliance, and digital empowerment go hand in hand. This fusion of climate responsibility and administrative reform must begin at the heart of democratic institutions.' Sustainable governance Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta described the initiative as a model for how legislative institutions can champion environmental stewardship. Highlighting the historic significance of the Assembly building, constructed in 1912 and once home to the country's first Parliament, Mr. Gupta said it is 'an example of how tradition and progress can go together'. He said that the rooftop solar project is expected to yield savings of up to ₹15 lakh per month, or approximately ₹1.75 crore annually, with potential surplus electricity generation through net metering. 'The financial savings generated through solar energy will be reinvested in developmental work for the welfare of Delhi's people,' the Speaker said. The Monsoon Session's opening day will also see the tabling of two reports from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India: State Finances for the year 2023-24, and Welfare of Building and Other Construction Workers for the year ending March 2023. In a key development in education policy, Minister of Education Ashish Sood is set to introduce the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2025, which aims to regulate fee hikes in private schools across the Capital. A trial run of the new e-Vidhan (paperless) system is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Monday, with the official sitting of the House at 2:00 p.m. to be conducted entirely on solar power, without using electricity from conventional sources.
