Jihadi on trial in Sweden for murdering Jordan pilot refuses to speak

Hindustan Times11-06-2025
Osama Krayem, on trial for the murder of a Jordanian pilot burned alive in Syria by the Islamic State group, on Wednesday refused to answer questions from the prosecution.
The brutal killing took place sometime in late 2014 or early 2015 and sparked outrage internationally and in Jordan, which was participating in the US-led coalition's strikes against IS positions in Syria.
Krayem, a 32-year-old Swede already serving long prison sentences for his role in the Paris and Brussels attacks in 2015 and 2016, is on trial in Stockholm suspected of war crimes and terrorist crimes for his role in the pilot's killing.
On December 24, 2014, an aircraft belonging to the Royal Jordanian Air Force crashed in Syria.
The pilot, Maaz al-Kassasbeh, was captured the same day by IS fighters near the central city of Raqqa and was burned alive in a cage sometime before February 3, 2015, when a video of the gruesome killing was published, according to the prosecution.
On Wednesday, prosecutor Henrik Olin asked Krayem, who was dressed in a dark blue shirt and appeared unfazed, if he intended to answer any questions.
"Can you say something about your current situation? Are you a practising Muslim? Can you say something about your view of the Islamic State?" the prosecutor asked.
"Does the fact that you are no longer answering questions have anything to do with you feeling that you were mistreated during the Swedish investigation?" Olin added.
Avoiding the prosecutor's gaze, the defendant remained silent.
Segments from interrogations with Krayem conducted during the investigation were read out and played during the trial.
When questioned by police, Krayem insisted he had spent only 15 to 20 minutes on-site, unaware of what was going to happen, according to the preliminary investigation.
"I was terrified, it was the first time I had seen someone burn," he said at the time.
Earlier on Wednesday, Jawdat al-Kassasbeh, the brother of the pilot and a plaintiff in the case, told the court of the physical and psychological trauma the family has suffered since the killing.
He said he learned of his brother's capture through a relative who worked at Jordan's foreign ministry and immediately went to the air force headquarters.
"There, I see that the head of the air force and the operations teams are having a meeting on the subject... There were large screens showing images of Syria," he testified.
"He told me: 'I think he's in this house,'" he said.
"Psychologically, I was not doing well at that moment. So I told the head of the air force that ... I thought would kill him in a horrible way. I asked if it would be possible to bomb the house so he could be spared an atrocious death," he added.
The Swedish investigation describes the al-Kassasbeh family as having close ties to Jordan's royal family and military.
Jawdat al-Kassasbeh said he later learned of his brother's death on television.
"It was a shock. I watched the whole video but in bits. I couldn't watch the entire video until 2021," he said.
When his mother learned of the execution, "she had to be hospitalised immediately".
His eldest sister "developed diabetes", while their father "contracted chronic illnesses, hypertension and is in poor psychological condition, he cries regularly", al-Kassasbeh said.

3 held for poisoning school water to oust Muslim headmaster in Karnataka: Police

Belagavi: Three people, including a Hindu right-wing group's leader, were arrested for allegedly poisoning the drinking water tank of a government school in Belagavi district of Karnataka to oust the school's Muslim headmaster, police said. At least 11 students from the Kannada-medium government school in Hullikatti village of Belagavi fell ill and were hospitalised on July 20. (Representative photo) At least 11 students from the Kannada-medium government school in Hullikatti village of Belagavi fell ill and were hospitalised on July 20. During the investigation, it came to light that pesticide was mixed into the school's drinking water tank, a police officer said. Three people — Sagar Patil, Krishna Madar, and Magangouda Patil — were detained by the police on August 1. During interrogation, they told the cops that they had contaminated the school's drinking water supply in an effort to transfer the school's Muslim headmaster. 'Sagar Patil, the Savadatti taluk president of (Hindu right-wing group) Sri Ram Sena, wanted the Muslim headmaster to face serious charges leading to his transfer. To carry out the plan, he enlisted the help of Madar by blackmailing him over his relationship with a person from another community,' Belagavi superintendent of police (SP) Bhimashankar Guled said on Saturday. The three had allegedly purchased pesticide from a shop in Munavalli village on July 18. 'To execute the plan, the accused roped in a student related to Patil and offered him ₹500 and snacks to mix the pesticide into the school's water tank,' SP Guled said. 'To prevent the student from identifying the substance, the pesticide was transferred into a plastic soft drink bottle. After mixing it into the water inside the tank, the boy discarded the bottle nearby,' the SP said, adding that the bottle was a key piece of evidence that helped investigators uncover the crime. Police traced the shopkeeper from whom the pesticide was purchased. 'Based on the shopkeeper's account, the three accused were detained. During interrogation, they confessed to the conspiracy and were arrested,' Guled added. The accused have been booked under Section 123 (causing hurt by means of poison) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are remanded to judicial custody. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday condemned the incident, describing it as a 'heinous act' rooted in communal hatred. 'Religious fundamentalism and communal hatred can lead to heinous acts, and this incident, which could have resulted in the massacre of innocent children, is a testament to that,' Siddaramaiah wrote in a post in Kannada on X. Karnataka School Water Tank Poisoned To Remove Muslim Principal

Bengaluru: A government school's water tank was poisoned to allegedly remove its Muslim headmaster from his post in Karnataka's Belagavi district. The incident, which occurred on July 14, has led to the arrest of three people, including a local leader affiliated with a right-wing group called Sri Ram Sene. According to the police, the accused aimed to create panic and suspicion around Headmaster Suleman Gorinaik, who has been in service at the Government Lower Primary School in Hulikatti for the past 13 years. Police said the plot was allegedly intended to malign his reputation and force his transfer. Twelve students fell ill after consuming water from the school's tank. The symptoms, though not fatal, were sufficient to raise alarm among school authorities and parents. The children were treated promptly and have since recovered, health officials confirmed. The police traced the poisoning to an act carried out by a fifth-grade student. The boy, upon questioning, disclosed that he had been given a bottle containing a harmful substance and instructed to pour it into the water tank. The person who handed him the bottle was identified as Krishna Madar. Further investigation revealed that Krishna had acted under duress. According to police, he was being blackmailed by Sagar Patil and Naganagouda Patil, who allegedly threatened to expose his inter-caste romantic relationship. Under pressure, Krishna complied with their demand to sabotage the school's drinking water. Sagar Patil, the taluk-level president of the Sri Rama Sene, has been identified as the alleged mastermind behind the incident. Police say Patil confessed during questioning that he resented a Muslim holding the position of headmaster in the local government school. All three accused -- Sagar Patil, Naganagouda Patil, and Krishna Madar -- have been arrested. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the poisoning attempt. Calling it a "heinous act driven by religious hatred and fundamentalism," he said the crime posed a grave threat to communal harmony. "The headmaster of the government school in Hulikatti village, Savadatti taluk, Belagavi district, belongs to the Muslim community. With the malicious intent of having him transferred elsewhere, Sagar Patil, the taluk president of Shriram Sena, along with two others, has been arrested for poisoning the drinking water of school children. In this incident that occurred 15 days ago, several children fell ill, but fortunately, no lives were lost," his post read. "Religious fundamentalism and communal hatred can lead to heinous acts, and this incident, which could have resulted in the massacre of innocent children, is a testament to that," he added.
