3 held for poisoning school water to oust Muslim headmaster in Karnataka: Police
At least 11 students from the Kannada-medium government school in Hullikatti village of Belagavi fell ill and were hospitalised on July 20. During the investigation, it came to light that pesticide was mixed into the school's drinking water tank, a police officer said.
Three people — Sagar Patil, Krishna Madar, and Magangouda Patil — were detained by the police on August 1.
During interrogation, they told the cops that they had contaminated the school's drinking water supply in an effort to transfer the school's Muslim headmaster.
'Sagar Patil, the Savadatti taluk president of (Hindu right-wing group) Sri Ram Sena, wanted the Muslim headmaster to face serious charges leading to his transfer. To carry out the plan, he enlisted the help of Madar by blackmailing him over his relationship with a person from another community,' Belagavi superintendent of police (SP) Bhimashankar Guled said on Saturday.
The three had allegedly purchased pesticide from a shop in Munavalli village on July 18. 'To execute the plan, the accused roped in a student related to Patil and offered him ₹500 and snacks to mix the pesticide into the school's water tank,' SP Guled said.
'To prevent the student from identifying the substance, the pesticide was transferred into a plastic soft drink bottle. After mixing it into the water inside the tank, the boy discarded the bottle nearby,' the SP said, adding that the bottle was a key piece of evidence that helped investigators uncover the crime.
Police traced the shopkeeper from whom the pesticide was purchased. 'Based on the shopkeeper's account, the three accused were detained. During interrogation, they confessed to the conspiracy and were arrested,' Guled added.
The accused have been booked under Section 123 (causing hurt by means of poison) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are remanded to judicial custody.
Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday condemned the incident, describing it as a 'heinous act' rooted in communal hatred.
'Religious fundamentalism and communal hatred can lead to heinous acts, and this incident, which could have resulted in the massacre of innocent children, is a testament to that,' Siddaramaiah wrote in a post in Kannada on X.

Man arrested after gunfight for jewellery store heist
Ghaziabad: A 23-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday following a gunfight in connection with a jewellery shop robbery in Brij Vihar. Police took him to a nearby hospital for treatment, and he is stable now. Telangana high court sets aside remand order for violating 24-hour norm
Hyderabad: Justice N Tukaramji of Telangana high court on Tuesday set aside the judicial remand of a man arrested by the Malakpet police in a case, holding that he was produced before the magistrate beyond the mandatory 24-hour limit prescribed under the Criminal Procedure Code (Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, BNSS). The judge pronounced the order while allowing the criminal revision case filed by Syed Dastagir, a student-cum-Rapido captain from Edi Bazar in Hyderabad. The judge ruled that the VII additional chief judicial magistrate, Hyderabad, had mechanically authorized the custody of the petitioner — arrayed as accused number 8 in FIR No. 252 of 2025 — without examining procedural lapses and statutory safeguards. The petitioner was arrested from his residence at 10:15pm on July 7 and produced before court at 11:35pm the next day, exceeding the 24-hour limit by about 80 minutes. The delay, the court held, rendered the remand illegal in terms of Sections 57 and 167 of the CrPC (BNSS). Wheel and steal: Two employes of car dealership isell 68 cars, pocket Rs 10 crore
Ahmedabad: At first, it looked like a paperwork glitch. But a closer audit at a car dealership in Sola exposed a massive fraud: 68 used cars had been sold off under the table by insiders. The fraud, which spanned over three months, was allegedly masterminded by two employees who pocketed the proceeds, leaving the company with a loss of nearly Rs 10 crore. Sola police on Tuesday booked the two senior employees after the company's CEO lodged a complaint. The complainant stated that the company, which deals in new and used cars, discovered the fraud during an internal audit on July 23. "Of the missing vehicles, 53 had been officially purchased between April and July 24, 2025, but could not be traced in stock. An additional 15 cars, which were never bought had been sold to buyers under the company's name. However, the money was neither deposited into the company account nor paid to the original sellers," the FIR stated. It was only when documents and customer records were cross verified that the scale of the fraud emerged. The total financial loss was pegged at Rs 9.71 crore. Based on the complaint, Sola police registered charges of criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the two accused individuals, and any others who may be found involved during the investigation.
