Report: Rockets trade F Cam Whitmore to Wizards

Reuters11 hours ago
July 5 - The Houston Rockets are trading forward Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards for two second-round picks, per ESPN.
The 20-year-old was selected by the Rockets with the 20th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. As a rookie, he flashed promise, averaging 12.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in only 18.7 minutes per game. In addition, he shot 35.9 percent from three-point range.
In his second season, Whitmore saw a slight minute reduction due to Houston's crowded depth chart; he averaged 9.4 points and 3.0 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game.
Whitmore was already behind Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason in the rotation, but this offseason, the Rockets crowded the depth chart even more by adding superstar Kevin Durant and forward Dorian Finney-Smith.
In Washington, Whitmore has a clearer path to playing time, as he should become a key piece for the rebuilding squad. He will join their young core of Tre Johnson, Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, and AJ Johnson.

Gold Cup final a vital stress test for US World Cup preparations, says Pochettino

July 6 (Reuters) - United States manager Mauricio Pochettino is eager to see how his side fare against Mexico in Sunday's Gold Cup final, saying it may well be the team's final chance to compete under real pressure before next year's FIFA World Cup. Both teams have bypassed the challenging World Cup qualifying rounds that typically help prepare teams for football's grandest event and are already guaranteed a place as hosts. After the final, the U.S. will next host South Korea and Japan in a pair of international friendly matches in September. "It's good for us. It's good because I think it's going to be maybe the last game that we are going to play under pressure, and to play under pressure is what we need, the team need," Pochettino told reporters on Saturday. "Because we are qualified for the World Cup and I think all the games that we are going to play after are friendly games. Those are unofficial games and I think it's important that we have, not a difficult scenario, but feel the pressure, feel the stress. "Because the World Cup is going to be about feeling the pressure and to feel the stress. It's great to have this opportunity." The Gold Cup final will be played at the NRG Stadium in Houston, just a few hours' drive away from central Texas where at least 43 people, including 15 children, have been confirmed dead following flash floods. Pochettino began his press conference by paying tribute to the victims, adding: "First of all I want to send our thoughts to the people in Texas, the tragic situation and for sure the people that were affected. "Our thoughts with all the people there. Our solidarity with all the families that were affected for the flood."

Orioles' Trevor Rogers still looking for first victory over Braves

July 6 - Baltimore left-hander Trevor Rogers will try to change his disappointing history against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday when the visiting Orioles go for a three-game sweep on Sunday. Baltimore has won the first two games of the series, 3-2 on Friday and 9-6 in 10 innings on Saturday, against the reeling Braves, who have lost eight of 10 and three in a row. Baltimore has not swept a season series against Atlanta since 2015. Rogers (1-0, 2.05 ERA) will be matched against Atlanta right-hander Grant Holmes (4-7, 3.47) and try to beat the Braves for the first time in his career. Rogers, who came up in the Miami organization, has seen plenty of Atlanta over the years. In nine career starts against the Braves -- he's only seen more action against Nationals, Mets and Phillies -- Rogers is 0-7 with a 5.57 ERA with 44 strikeouts and 15 walks in 42 innings. He went 0-2 with a 4.22 in two starts against the Braves in 2024. Rogers was acquired from the Marlins last year. He began the season on the injured list because of a right knee subluxation being before making his season debut with the Orioles on May 24. In four starts since being activated, he has had only one start shorter than five innings. His best performance came on June 23 when he threw eight shutout innings against the Rangers. He came back on Monday to throw 5 1/3 innings and allow two runs at Texas. "Just everything that's surrounding him, watching maybe struggle a little bit last year when we got him and just kind of the flack that the organization got for him," Baltimore manager Tony Mansolino said. "We saw a guy that looked pretty good to me." Rogers gave credit to the coaching staff for helping him get back to the major leagues. "We really just broke down mechanics and what I can improve on to try to get my velocity back and I think we're seeing that," Rogers said. "I'm just really happy with where things are right now." Holmes has been a model of consistency for the Braves since joining the rotation. In 17 starts this year, Holmes has pitched at least five innings 14 times. Over his last three starts, Holmes has had two scoreless stints and allowed only two runs in 16 2/3 innings, an ERA of 1.08. He threw six shutout innings against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday with 10 strikeouts in his last outing. It was his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season. "I don't ever expect to go out there and get that many swing-and-misses," Holmes said. "But I do feel like my stuff is good enough to get that. But to say I think that I could go out there and get it quite often would be kind of dumb, as they say." Holmes has never faced the Orioles. The Orioles may be forced to make a move to add a catcher. Gary Sanchez left Saturday's game with right knee pain after a play at the plate. That leaves Jacob Stallings as the only healthy catcher on the roster. Baltimore already has catchers Chadwick Tromp (back), Adley Rutschman (oblique) and Maverick Handley (concussion) on the injured list. --Field Level Media

Three batters later, Bobby Witt Jr.'s run-scoring single accounted for the Royals' lone run. Marlins 4, Brewers 2 Rookie Agustin Ramirez belted a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and help Miami pick up a home win over Milwaukee. Mets 12, Yankees 6 Pete Alonso had two home runs and five RBIs to help the Mets extend their winning streak to four games with a victory against the visiting Yankees. The Mets took a 4-0 lead in the first when Brandon Nimmo mashed a grand slam into the bullpen in right-center field. Already leading by three in the fifth, the Mets built upon it after Francisco Lindor drew a walk and set the stage for Alonso's 19th home run of the season to go ahead 7-2. Starter Frankie Montas (1-1) allowed four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Starter Carlos Rodon (9-6) gave up seven runs (six earned) on five hits over five innings for the Yankees, who have lost a season-high six straight. Orioles 9, Braves 6 (10 innings) Ramon Laureano and Jacob Stallings delivered run-scoring doubles in the 10th inning as Baltimore defeated host Atlanta in extras after the game had four lead changes and three ties. Laureano, who finished last season with the Braves, broke the tie with a double against reliever Rafael Montero that scored automatic runner Jordan Westburg. After Ryan O'Hearn was intentionally walked, Stallings drove in both runners with a double to left. Felix Bautista earned the win and Yennier Cano threw a perfect 10th to earn his first save. The Orioles smacked three homers in the game. Tyler O'Neill crushed a solo shot in the third inning, his third of the year and first since April 13, and Jordan Westburg followed with a 461-foot two-run shot. Colton Cowser then hit his eighth homer of the year in the fourth. The Braves got home runs by Austin Riley and Matt Olson. Tigers 1, Guardians 0 Spencer Torkelson hit a solo home run and Casey Mize pitched seven dominant innings in a combined four-hitter as Detroit edged host Cleveland. Torkelson went deep in the second inning against Logan Allen, sending his 20th homer of the year into the seats in right field. Meanwhile, Mize (9-2) scattered four hits over a season-high 102 pitches, one short of his career high. The right-hander did not allow a runner to reach third base. Allen worked six innings, giving up one run on two hits in losing his third straight start. The Guardians dropped their ninth in a row, matching their longest losing streak since 2021. Cleveland has been outscored 41-13 during the skid, being shut out five times. White Sox 10, Rockies 3 Lenyn Sosa homered, finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in four runs and Michael A.
