Indonesia arrests 2 foreigners for smuggling cocaine to Bali
A Brazilian man and a South African woman were arrested separately on July 13 after customs officers at Bali's international airport saw suspicious items in the man's luggage and the woman's underwear on X-ray scans.
Indonesia has extremely strict drug laws, and convicted smugglers are sometimes executed by firing squad.
The 25-year-old Brazilian man, who police identified by his initials as YB, was arrested with 3,086.36 grams (6.8 pounds) of cocaine in the lining of his suitcase and backpack shortly after he arrived at the airport from Dubai, said Made Sinar Subawa, head of the Eradication Division at Bali's Narcotic Agency.
The same day, customs officers caught a 32-year-old South African woman, identified as LN, and seized 990.83 grams (2.1 pounds) of cocaine she in her underwear, Subawa said.
During interrogation, YB said that he was promised 400 million rupiah ($2,450) to hand the cocaine he obtained in Brasilia to a man he called as Tio Paulo, while LN expected to get 25 million rupiah ($1,500) after deliver the drugs to someone she identified as Cindy, according to Subawa.
Subawa said a police operation failed to catch the two people named by the suspects, whom police believee are low-level distributors.
Authorities presented the suspects wearing orange prison uniforms and masks, with their hands handcuffed, at a news conference in Denpasar, the capital, along with the cocaine they were found with.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says Indonesia is a major drug-smuggling hub despite having some of the strictest drug laws in the world, in part because international drug syndicates target its young population.
The Denpasar District Court later Thursday is set to sentence two other groups of foreigners on drug charges. Verdicts for an Argentine woman and a British man who were accused of smuggling cocaine onto the island, and for drug offense against a group of three British nationals, including a woman, are expected to be read out separately at the same court.
About 530 people are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug-related crimes, including 96 foreigners, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections' data showed. Indonesia's last executions, of a citizen and three foreigners, were carried out in July 2016.

Provincial investigation reports exonerated him of all charges in 2016, according to the Caixin Global news outlet. Shi Yongxin entered the Shaolin Temple in 1981 and became its abbot in 1999, according to the temple's website. China's state news agency Xinhua reported in 2015 that he was known as a 'CEO monk,' attracting criticism for developing commercial operations to promote kung fu shows and merchandise. On Sunday, Chinese local media outlets reported that authorities had dismissed as fake an online notice claiming Shi Yongxin was intercepted by authorities while trying to flee to the US with a number of mistresses and about 20 children.

Shock details emerge about moments before Aussie plunged from his hotel room in Bali and suffered horrific spinal injuries
An Aussie who survived a horrific fall after plunging from the third floor of a Bali hotel had been in a heated argument with his girlfriend moments earlier. The 30-year-old man, identified by police as Dylan, fell from the balcony of his Ramada Encore Hotel room in Kuta at about 4.25am local time on Saturday. Dylan and his girlfriend are understood to have been engaged in a public argument in the lead-up to the fall. Local witness Made Suwitra claimed the pair were shouting in the hotel bar before they were asked to lower their voices so as not to disturb the other guests. The couple said 'no problem' and returned to their room on the third floor before another disturbance was reported by a hotel staff member. Dylan later fell from their balcony, landing on the rooftop of the housekeeping office that was on the floor below. The Aussie landed face down, injuring his tailbone. The hotel's on-call doctor decided it was not safe to bring him down without assistance, so they called local authorities for help. Footage from the incident showed emergency services carefully lowering the 30-year-old to the ground on a stretcher. Dylan was heard groaning in pain and saying 'I can't' and 'oh my god'. The Aussie was taken to BIMC Hospital in Kuta for further treatment. He did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. Denpasar Police spokesperson Ketut Sukadi said police have launched an investigation. Kuta has a controversial reputation among travel bloggers, as it has become known for 'over-tourism' along with its rowdy nightlife and heavily congested traffic. The district in the south of the capital, Denpasar, was rocked by a similar tragedy earlier this year. Melbourne woman Courtney Mills died after falling from her hotel balcony in Kuta. Ms Mills, a passionate DJ, was found lying on the side of the hotel's pool around 1am. Hotel staff had taken her to her room around an hour earlier. Her sister Kiani praised the DJ's 'sparkle' as she paid tribute following the tragic incident.
