I quit Monster Hunter World after a few hours — but Monster Hunter Wilds just became my early GOTY pick
Monster Hunter World was one of those games where everybody around me seemed to love it, and I just couldn't find the hook. I did try. I played for around half a dozen hours at launch before my patience ran thin, and I was forced to conclude it just wasn't for me. I uninstalled it and haven't touched it since.
So, heading into 2025, it's fair to say that Monster Hunter Wilds was not especially high on my gaming wishlist. But, just like with Worlds, seeing all the hype and anticipation surrounding the next mainline installment in the uber-popular franchise had me itching to give Monster Hunter another try.
I was fortunate enough to get early access to the game, and have spent the last couple of weeks totally falling in love with Monster Hunter Wilds. It's gone from a title I was curious (but pretty reserved) about, to easily my early pick for my personal Game of the Year for 2025. It even ranks ahead of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which is some feat as I have a lot of love for the medieval RPG.
It's perhaps a little surprising, as Wilds doesn't really do anything radically different compared to Worlds, but it's proved to be the right game, at the right time. Here's why I've become obsessed with Monster Hunter Wilds completely against my own expectations.

Curiously, I don't actually think the biggest reason why I'm enjoying Wilds in a way that I never did with Worlds comes down to any radical differences between the two games. Wilds is very much an iterative sequel, taking the foundation from Worlds and making small (but still pretty meaningful) adjustments and improvements. What's changed this time is me.
A person can change a lot over seven years, and with Monster Hunter Wilds, I'm taking a very different approach. When I played Worlds, I sped between objectives, and rarely spent time at base camp. I felt as if I wasn't hunting monsters every moment I was playing, then I was doing something wrong.
That approach led to me being woefully unprepared and under-leveled for even some early-game encounters and resulted in plenty of frustration. In Wilds, I've found the joys in fully gearing up ahead of fights, making sure I've crafted the best items I can, cooking up meals that give me additional buffs, and restocking my consumable pouches to make sure I have what I need.
Just taking a moment to slow down, and engage with the game's intricate series of upgrade, item and equipment menus has greatly aided my overall enjoyment. It's also made the actual fights with monsters feel even more exciting as they come after a careful period of proper preparation.
One new addition in Wilds compared to World is the inclusion of Support Hunters. These are NPC characters that you can assist you out in the field.
This might seem a small addition on paper (and I believe the feature originated in Monster Hunter Rise), but it's made a huge difference. Playing Monster Hunter solo is sort of dull — it's just you whaling on an oversized beast for minutes on end — but when experienced with other players, there's a real sense of camaraderie, and also potential for synergizing your load-outs.
Of course, playing with other humans online is preferable, but when those aren't available (or when the servers were sparsely populated during the review period), I've found the NPC hunters to be more than adequate.
Plus, as it's always the same NPCs, I've started to build an attachment to them. Rosso has become my trusted sharpshooter, and Olivia once came in clutch to distract a towering monster when it was about to take a lethal swing at me.
Another aspect of Monster Hunter Wilds that has fueled my current obsession is that after every single mission, I always feel like I'm suitably rewarded for the effort.
I can definitely recall heading back to base in Worlds and not having enough materials to craft anything substantial. But in Wilds, even as I approach the end of the story, I haven't encountered the same friction.
Whenever I return victorious from a hunt, there's always been some way for me to approve my character, upgrade my gear, or just craft a new weapon.
The loop of crafting cool gear to hunt monsters to craft even cooler gear has always been Monster Hunter's bread and butter, but it's been polished to a fine sheen in this latest entry.
All these elements add up to create an experience that I simply don't want to put down. At the start of the year, I would have thought it unlikely to see Monster Hunter Wilds among my GOTY picks, but now, I'd be shocked if it doesn't rank near the very top.

James Cameron has no plans to step away from directing Avatar 4 and 5, but he's not ruling it out: "I might not be able to do that"

Legendary director James Cameron has every intention in the world to helm the next two films in the Avatar franchise, the fourth and fifth. With the series' third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, on the immediate horizon, Cameron is assuring fans he's planning to ride it out till the end. That said, he's also offered the caveat that he might not have the energy to spend years making them. "I mean, there's no reason not to. I'm healthy, I'm good to go," Cameron tells Empire, before qualifying his answer. "I'm not going to rule it out. I mean, I've got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. You know what I mean? I might not be able to do that." Cameron is 70, and it seems he has no plans to slow down whatsoever, with an Avatar animated anthology series on the way alongside the pair of sequels. Meanwhile, Fire and Ash is being hailed as "pure James Cameron wow." And with both films so far reaching the absolute pinnacle of box office receipts - in the billions - it's incredibly likely that all three of the next films will rake in piles and piles of cash. But if Cameron does wind up having to step back from directing Avatar 4 or 5, he's already got a model in mind for the kind of relationship he'd like to have with whichever filmmaker might replace him. "I had a great working relationship – and I'm using this as an example, not as an answer - with Robert Rodriguez on [Battle Angel Alita]," Cameron states, making it clear he's not naming Rodriguez as his potential Avatar successor. "He honoured what I had written. We worked very collaboratively. If I can, I'll just do it." Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives in theaters on December 19. James Cameron warns that his first post-Avatar 3 movie could be the "most challenging film" he'll ever make, and the director "might not even be up to the task"

James Cameron is about to become the highest-grossing director of all time, but even he thinks he "might not be up to the task" of making his next movie after Avatar: Fire and Ash. Speaking to Discussing Film's Andrew J. Salazar about his upcoming adaptation of Ghosts of Hiroshima, which charts the story of survivors of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombs, Cameron said, "To me, this might be the most challenging film I ever make. I don't 100% have my strategy fully in place for how I want to see it; how I want to shield people from the horror but still be honest; how I can find some kind of poetry, beauty, or spiritual epiphany in it somehow – which I know must be there. It's there in every human story." "It's going to be very challenging," Cameron reiterated. "I might not even be up to the task, but that never stopped me before." Cameron bought the rights to Ghosts of Hiroshima – written by Charles Pellegrino, who advised the director on Titanic and Avatar – last year. In a separate interview with Jake's Takes, Cameron again remained humble in the face of telling its story, including the real-life tragedy of engineer Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who was returning home to see his family in Hiroshima. Upon escaping the blast, he boarded a train to Nagasaki just before it, too, was bombed. "I only hope that I know enough as a filmmaker to do this subject justice. I know how to do the visual effects – the issue is how to tell this as a human story and, yet, be truthful to what happened, to the horrific aspect of it," Cameron said. While Ghosts of Hiroshima is undated, the rest of Cameron's releases are already on the calendar. Avatar: Fire and Ash, which just received its first trailer, is out on December 19, 2025. If it grosses $2 billion, it will see Cameron overtake Steven Spielberg as the highest-grossing director in history. Avatar 4 and 5 hit cinemas on December 21, 2029 and December 19, 2031 respectively. The Jesus Lizard cancel upcoming shows after band member experiences "serious health incident"

Noise rock icons The Jesus Lizard have cancelled the remainder of their 2025 shows on medical advice. The band were scheduled to begin a run of dates in Auckland, New Zealand, on October 11, before travelling to Australia and Japan, with US shows kicking off in November. In a statement, the band say, "The Jesus Lizard regret to announce the cancellation of their scheduled October 2025 dates in New Zealand, Australia and Japan, as well as their November 2025 dates in the United States. "Upon the advice of medical professionals following a serious health incident affecting one of the band members, it is considered necessary as a precautionary measure. "The band would like to convey their apologies to disappointed fans and emphasise that the affected member's prognosis is excellent. Your understanding and support are very much appreciated as always. "As we cannot currently project replacement dates, refunds will be available at point of purchase." Last year, The Jesus Lizard released Rack, their first album in 26 years. "Outside of splotchy touring between now and a year from now there's nothing on the books," frontman David Yow told Classic Rock last year, when asked about the band's future plans. "Hopefully, by the time we finish all that, and if we're all four alive, we can take it from there."
