Lakshya Sen, frustrated by minor injuries, aims for victories before the World Championships. He recently defeated China's Wang Zheng Xing and is focused on staying competitive.
Lakshya Sen has been dealing with persistent minor injuries over the past few months, leading to some frustration. His main focus now is to secure some victories as he prepares for the World Championships.
After a challenging season with several first-round exits, Sen delivered an encouraging performance on Wednesday, defeating China's Wang Zheng Xing 21-11, 21-18 to start positively.
'It feels really good to win a match. I've been struggling on the court and off the court as well with injuries. I would not say injuries, but some niggles here and there which are keeping me away from badminton," he said.
'It's a little bit frustrating. The past few months have been a little bit frustrating. But yeah, again, I'm focused. I'm trying to do the right thing. And yeah, really happy with the win today."
Recently, Sen was troubled by a back issue that forced him to retire mid-match against Lin Chun-Yi at the Singapore Open.
When asked if the recurring niggles affected his mindset, Sen replied, 'Yes, I think it was there. Especially before the match, even closing in the second set where it was close. I mean, it was back in my mind. But yeah, I was just trying to fight my thoughts and also the opponent.
'So yeah, happy with the way I played today. Looking forward to the next match, one match at a time."
What's Next For Lakshya Sen?
Regarding his goals for the upcoming weeks, Sen said, 'Yes, the World Championships are just around the corner and I've been preparing well for it.
'For me now, the most important thing is I've trained well in the last few months. I've done everything in training. So now it's just about winning more matches and be more competitive, be sharp until the World Championships.
'I have a few good tournaments to just keep going and then good 2-3 weeks of preparation before the World Championships."
Speaking about his preparation for the Japan Open, Sen revealed he had been dealing with shoulder and ankle issues in recent months.
'I think I've been training well. But yeah, there were some injuries – with the shoulder and also the ankle. So I was doing everything possible to protect the injured parts.
'Just hoping that I get back to winning ways and try and get more matches under my belt now."

South Africa Choke Again, Fail To Score 7 Runs In Last Over Of Tri-Series Final

Matt Henry bowled the final over of the T20I Tri-series final in Harare on Saturday, and the 33-year-old pacer successfully managed to defend 7 runs to seal a famous win for NZ. South Africa needed 7 runs from six balls on Saturday (July 26) to win the T20I tri-series final against New Zealand in Harare, but they failed to score seven runs and went on to lose the match by three runs in a dramatic manner. At the end of 19 overs in the run chase, the South African team was cruising at 174/4, and the target was 181 runs. Just when everyone started thinking that the game was over for New Zealand, Mitchell Santner handed the ball to Matt Henry, and the 33-year-old fast bowler successfully managed to defend seven runs to secure a famous win for his team. On the first ball of the final over, he bowled a dot ball against dangerman Dewald Brevis and then on the second ball picked up his wicket. Brevis tried to play a big shot against Henry but was caught by Michael Bracewell near the boundary ropes. Brevis faced 16 balls and, with the help of one four and three sixes, scored 31 runs. On the third ball, Corbin Bosch also tried to play a big shot, but this time Bracewell failed to complete the difficult catch, and the South African all-rounder completed two runs to bring down the equation to 5 needed from 3 balls. On the fourth ball, Bosch ran one run to bring George Linde back on strike. On the fifth ball, when South Africa needed 4 runs to win from two balls, Linde tried to play a big shot down the ground, but Daryl Mitchell completed a super diving catch to stun South African fans. Linde's wicket on the penultimate ball of the run chase left South Africa needing a boundary on the last ball, but Senuran Muthusamy failed to score any runs. The clip of the final over by Henry was shared on X by FanCode, and within no time, the video went viral on the internet. He also finished the T20I series with a total of 10 wickets in four matches, which was the most by any player, and it helped him bag the Player of the Series award. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 21:40 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Ben Stokes Becomes Third Cricketer After Garry Sobers & Jacques Kallis To...

Ben Stokes became only the third cricketer to complete 7000 runs and 200 wickets after Jacques Kallis and Gary Sobers. Ben Stokes has been the driving force for England in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Until Friday, he was just the highest wicket-taker of the Test series, but on Saturday, he also broke a two-year drought for a Test hundred. The English skipper launched a brutal assault against the Indian attack, smashing 141 runs with the help of 11 boundaries and 3 sixes. The knock came after a stunning 5-wicket haul in the first innings that sparked India's batting collapse. Thus Stokes became the fourth England cricketer to score a hundred and take five wickets in the same Test, joining the elite company of Tony Greig, Ian Botham — who achieved it five times — and Gus Atkinson. Double of 7000 runs and 200 wickets in Tests Garry Sobers (8032 runs & 235 wkts) Jacques Kallis (13289 runs & 292 wkts) Ben Stokes (7000* runs & 229 wkts)* Stokes' commanding 141 lifted England to 669 all out on Day 4 of the fourth Test, their fifth-highest Test score ever, giving them a formidable first-innings lead of 311 runs. The England skipper, who resumed on 77 not out, had thrilled the crowd with his trademark aggressive strokeplay. Despite not bowling between lunch and tea, a team spokesperson clarified he was fit, having already made an impact with the ball earlier by returning figures of 5-72 in India's first innings total of 358. This knock marked Stokes' first Test century since his exhilarating 155 against Australia at Lord's in June 2023. The 34-year-old celebrated his 14th century in 115 Tests emotionally, clenching his fist, looking skyward, and making a crooked finger gesture in memory of his late father Ged Stokes before acknowledging the crowd with a raised bat. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 21:13 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Sumit Nagal Exits Tampere Open In Semifinals

Sumit Nagal had also finished as a semifinalist in an event in Italy earlier this month. Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal fell short of reaching his first Challenger-level final of the season, losing a hard-fought battle against Sasha Gueymard Wayenburg in the semifinals of the Tampere Open in Tampere on Saturday. Ranked 306, Nagal was defeated 5-7, 2-6 by his French opponent, who is ranked 57 places below him, in the clay court event. At 5-5, 15-all, Wayenburg hit a forehand wide and long, followed by another forehand error, giving Nagal two breakpoints. Wayenburg responded by hitting deep into the corners, opening up the court for winners. He saved the first breakpoint with an overhead smash while Nagal made an unforced error, wasting the second chance. The Frenchman eventually held his serve, forcing Nagal to serve to push the opening set to a tie-breaker. However, Nagal netted a backhand return, giving Wayenburg his first set point. Nagal saved it with a forehand winner on his opponent's right flank. Wayenburg outwitted Nagal on the next point, leaving him wrong-footed and smashing a backhand winner to earn another set point. He secured the set with an overhead smash, pushing Nagal to the back of the court with deep hitting on both flanks. In the second set, Nagal had a chance to take the lead with breakpoints in the first game but could not capitalise. To make matters worse, he was down a breakpoint after hitting a backhand long at 30-all in the next game. Wayenburg did not miss the opportunity and took a 2-0 lead. The French player played smartly, often charging to the net to smash easy winners, quickly advancing to a 3-0 lead. From that point, it was one-way traffic. Nagal equalled his best performance of the 2025 season, having reached the semifinals of an event in Italy earlier this month.
