Wallabies lock Philip returning home, joins Waratahs

Yahoo06-04-2025
Hard-working World Cup lock Matt Philip is headed back to Australian rugby from Japan in July, making the NSW Waratahs his third Super Rugby team.
The 31-year-old veteran of 31 Tests becomes the latest in a string of players to commit to play onshore until at least the home Rugby World Cup in 2027.
Currently playing for Yokohama Canon Eagles, Sydney-raised Philip will add further depth in a position where the Wallabies already have plenty to call on.
"I'm stoked to be coming home," saifd Philip in a Rugby Australia statement.
"To be able to represent my state of New South Wales and play in front of my family, friends and supporters next year is something I'm really looking forward to.
"Japan has been a great opportunity to continue to develop my game and grow off the field but I'm certainly motivated to bring back my experience and contribute again to Australian rugby.
"There are some really big events on home soil in the not too distant future that I'd love to be a part of and I'll be working hard to give myself the best opportunity to do so."
Previously with the Western Force and then the now-defunct Melbourne Rebels, Philip played in two of Australia's four Tests in the ill-fated 2023 World Cup campaign under Eddie Jones before heading to Japan.
Having made his Test debut back in 2017, Phillip became a regular in 2021 when he played in 11 of 14 Tests. At the end of that year, Philip moved to France where he spent one season with Pau in the Top 14, before returning to again linked up with the Rebels ahead of the 2022 Super Rugby season. He went on to reclaim his Wallabies spot for the start of the 2022 Test season before an ACL injury which prevented him contending for the Spring Tour that year.

Broncos linebacker Drew Sanders carted off practice field with right leg injury

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Third-year linebacker Drew Sanders was carted off the Denver Broncos' football fields Saturday after injuring his right leg during drills. Sanders began hopping around right after the play and then went to the ground in pain. Team medical personnel looked at his right foot and ankle before putting him on a cart and taking him inside team headquarters for an MRI. The injury happened with about 15 minutes left in practice and coach Sean Payton said afterward that he had no update other than to say it wasn't another Achilles tendon injury like the one Sanders sustained in the 2024 offseason. Sanders played in all 17 games as a rookie but missed much of last season after tearing his Achilles tendon in May 2024. He returned in November and played in four games, making eight tackles. Sanders has bounced back and forth between inside and outside linebacker ever since the Broncos selected him in the third round out of Arkansas in the 2023 draft. He's a key backup with Alex Singleton returning from an ACL tear in Week 3 last year and free agent addition Dre Greenlaw returning from a strained thigh this spring and a torn Achilles tendon he suffered in the Super Bowl after the 2023 season, which limited him to two games with the San Francisco 49ers last season. ___

Texas A&M freshman 5-star WR is looking healthy in latest video

Texas A&M's 2025 wide receiver rotation is built on speed and quickness, which should result in consistent separation in coverage after head coach Mike Elko and his staff landed KC Concepcion (NC State), Mario Craver (Mississippi State), and Jonah Wilson (Houston) from the transfer portal, while 2025 signees TK Norman, Kelshaun Johnson and five-star Jerome Myles represent the future rotation. However, after missing a majority of his senior high school season in Draper, Utah due to a knee injury, Jerome Myles is back and 100% healthy with an eye on contributing at a high level during the 2025 season, bringing his notable size at 6'2" and 220 pounds and speed that fits what Elko and OC Collin Klein are looking for to fill the void left by junior Noah Thomas, who transferred to Georgia this offseason. While many worried that health would be an issue after Myles was the last signee from the 2025 class to make it to campus, that is now in the rearview mirror, meaning getting up to speed with the rest of the wide receiver rotation is key to make an instant impact this fall. In a new video from Myles' Instagram, courtesy of On3/Rivals recruiting insider Jaxson Callaway, the Utah native is already looking the part before fall camp officially begins next week. For someone coming off an ACL injury, Myles is looking like a player with a chance to crack the starting lineup, but will more than likely be the No. 4 option for starting quarterback Marcel Reed once he gets acclimated to the speed of college offenses. Either way, this is a great sign for the Aggies, who know that no matter how long it takes, Jerome Myles is destined for stardom.
