Ted Kotcheff death: Famed Weekend at Bernie's director dies aged 94

Yahoo12-04-2025
Canadian director Ted Kotcheff, best known for the 1989 cult classic Weekend at Bernie's, has died at the age of 94.
The filmmaker's death was confirmed by his family to the Canadian outlet Globe and Mail. A cause of death is unknown.
Born William Theodore Kotcheff in 1931 in Toronto, Ontario, he is also famed for having directed Sylvester Stallone in his first outing as Vietnam veteran John Rambo in 1982's action thriller First Blood.
An English literature graduate from University College, University of Toronto, Kotcheff started his 60-year career in television. At 24, he joined the staff of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, where he would later become the network's youngest director during his two years there, working on several shows, including Encounter and On Camera.
By 1958, he moved across the pond to pursue a life and career in the U.K. There, he worked as a director on ITV's anthology series Armchair Theatre before going on to work with the BBC.
In between working at the BBC and directing shows on the West End, Kotcheff somehow managed to make his feature directorial debut with the 1962 British comedy Tiara Tahiti. The film starred James Mason as high-class smooth operator Brett Aimsley.
It wasn't until two decades later that Kotcheff came out with First Blood, widely considered to be his breakout movie. While the film was a box office hit, having raked in $125 million worldwide at the time, Kotcheff turned down the offer to direct the film's first sequel, First Blood 2.
'They offered me the first sequel, and after I read the script I said, 'In the first film he doesn't kill anybody. In this film he kills 75 people,'' Kotcheff recalled in a 2016 interview with Filmmaker Magazine. 'It seemed to be celebrating the Vietnam War, which I thought was one of the stupidest wars in history.'
He added: 'Fifty-five-thousand young Americans died and so many veterans committed suicide. I couldn't turn myself inside out like that and make that kind of picture. Of course, I could have been a rich man today — that sequel made $300 million.'
Kotcheff instead went on to direct the late Gene Hackman in Uncommon Valor (1983), a war action about a retired Marine officer, who's holding out hope that his son, a prisoner of war, is still alive.
Other well-known movies of his include 1974's The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, starring Richard Dreyfuss; 1977's Fun With Dick and Jane, starring Jane Fonda and George Segal; and 1979's North Dallas Forty, starring Nick Nolte.
He eventually returned to the world of TV in the 1990s. He served as an executive producer on the long-running police procedural Law & Order: SVU for more than a decade and even directed seven episodes across the first seven seasons.
Kotcheff was preceded in death by his wife, actor Sylvia Kay, who died in January 2019 at the age of 82. She had previously starred in Kotcheff's 1971 psychological thriller Wake in Fright.
Currently, a documentary about his life — The Apprenticeship of Ted Kotcheff — is in production with Antonio Saillant directing. It will be narrated by Dreyfuss.

Nandy demands ‘accountability at highest levels' after Bob Vylan broadcast

Ministers expect 'accountability at the highest levels' for the BBC's decision to screen Bob Vylan at Glastonbury, the Culture Secretary has said. Lisa Nandy told the Commons she has heard from the BBC but was 'not satisfied with the response'. Punk duo Bob Vylan led chants of 'death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)' during their Worthy Farm set last weekend, and face an investigation by Avon and Somerset Police. London's Metropolitan Police is also investigating the two Bobs – who perform using the aliases Bobby Vylan and Bobbie Vylan – for allegedly making similar comments at Alexandra Palace in May. Conservative shadow culture secretary Stuart Andrew told the Commons: 'Given the BBC are seemingly able to pull live broadcasts when things go wrong at football matches, for example, it's extraordinary that this didn't happen on this occasion. 'Can the Secretary of State update the House on the discussions she's had with the BBC, and why the same thing didn't happen on this occasion? 'What due diligence was carried out by them about the acts that were performing? 'And given as she's said we're still waiting for a response to the previous Hamas documentary, is she satisfied with those conversations she's had and the urgency that the organisation are taking?' Ms Nandy replied: 'No, the answer is that I'm not satisfied with the response that I've had.' The Culture Secretary previously made a ministerial statement in the Commons on Monday, when she said 'it should have been foreseeable that there would be problems with broadcasts'. She told MPs then that she wanted 'rapid action to make sure this cannot happen again'. In Thursday's update, Ms Nandy told MPs: 'I have received a reply to the very many questions that were raised by colleagues on all sides. 'I'm not satisfied with that, and I have gone back to the BBC leadership to ask for further information, in particular, as he mentioned, about the failure to pull the live feed, about the due diligence that was done prior to deciding to screen this act, and also about the level of senior oversight that took place in the BBC during the Glastonbury weekend. 'I think the BBC leadership will hear and have heard the strength of feeling in this House about this, and I expect further answers to be forthcoming imminently.' The corporation removed the documentary Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone from its online iPlayer platform in February after it emerged its 13-year-old narrator was the son of a Hamas official. In a follow-up question, Mr Andrew said: 'I'm as disappointed as she is that they haven't been able to come back with even basic facts. 'There were hundreds of BBC staff there and not being able to identify who ultimately had the final decision on whether to broadcast or not is not acceptable, and I think the chairman (Samir Shah) needs to inform her as a matter of urgency who that was and what action they are going to take. 'While I absolutely understand the independence of the BBC, just as artists can't hide behind artistic expression for vile commentary, neither can the BBC hide behind independence for accountability, and I hope she knows she has the full support of this side of the House as she pushes them for clarity.' Ms Nandy said she was 'grateful' that Mr Andrew had made 'the very important distinction between independence and accountability'. She continued: 'Given the seriousness of what happened – and particularly we heard in the House and I was able to bring to the House the absolute shocking stories of the impact that this has had on the Jewish community in this country – given the seriousness of this, I would expect there to be accountability at the highest levels.'

Basing a '28 Years Later' character on Jimmy Savile was 'masterful,' the actor who plays Samson the Alpha said

Fans of " 28 Years Later" were divided by the ending that introduces Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell), a cult leader who bears more than a passing resemblance to Jimmy Savile, the BBC presenter outed as a prolific sexual abuser after his death in 2011. In an interview with Business Insider in June, the film's respective director and producer, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, confirmed that the character is based on Savile. Chi Lewis-Parry, who plays Samson, a new, super-strong type of the infected called an Alpha, told BI that he thinks introducing Crystal was a bold decision but said "you have to test the boundaries." Boyle has always challenged audiences with his films, including "28 Days Later" and "Trainspotting," a dark comedy about people in Glasgow addicted to heroin. In the world of "28 Years Later," the Rage Virus would have broken out before Savile's crimes could be unearthed. It seems likely the sequel, " The Bone Temple," will explore this further. Jack O'Connell as Sir Jimmy Crystal and his cult in 28 YEARS LATER behind the scenes set photo #28YearsLater — Culture Base (@Culture3ase) June 21, 2025 Lewis-Parry said: "It's hard to come up with something original" in the horror genre. "Introducing that character is a different type of horror. It's taking real horror and sticking it in a fantasy horror scenario. I think that's masterful because you're not just relying on the jump scares and the stereotypical gore. "You are kind of teasing the psyche of an audience with a real-life horror that has been discovered," he added. "For me, it's almost scarier because that really happened. Whatever you attach to that character is the fear element. I think it's brilliant, personally." Boyle and Garland told BI how Crystal's scenes in "28 Years Later" set up the sequel. Garland said the bizarre cult leader taps into bigger themes of a "misremembered past" and "how selective memory is." O'Connell will no doubt have a larger presence in the second film as Crystal, while Lewis-Parry will reprise his role as Samson. BI previously reported how Lewis-Parry said he scared Boyle into casting him in the role during his audition. Lewis-Parry teased that fans "might fall in love with Samson," but didn't reveal any plot points, adding: "it's magical when you watch something and know nothing about any surprises."
