NBA: Suns' Devin Booker agreed to 2-year, $145-M contract extension — reports

GMA Network2 days ago
The Phoenix Suns and Devin Booker have agreed on a two-year maximum contract extension worth an estimated $145 million that will keep the All-Star guard with the franchise through the 2029-30 season, according to multiple reports on Wednesday night.
Booker, 28, will earn the highest annual salary in an extension in league history, ESPN reported. The $72.5 million per season pushes Booker ahead of the $71.25 million average annual value of Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's $285 million super max extension. The reigning NBA MVP of the newly minted league champions was awarded the new deal earlier this month.
The Suns will have Booker in the fold for five years and $316 million as they build around the four-time All-Star, two-time All-NBA honoree and two-time Olympic gold medalist.
Phoenix has a new general manager after promoting executive Brian Gregory. Ex-GM James Jones was moved into a senior advisor role before joining the league's front office as executive vice president. The announcement came earlier on Wednesday.
Former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Jordan Ott has replaced head coach Mike Budenholzer, with Booker reportedly involved in the coaching search and approving Ott.
The Suns are making over the roster as well, having traded 15-time All-Star forward Kevin Durant to Houston in a seven-team transaction that brought a package of players, including veterans Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks as well as rookie center Khaman Maluach, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 draft out of Duke.
Phoenix selected Booker with the 13th overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft out of Kentucky.
He has averaged 24.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 34.4 minutes in 673 regular-season games (648 starts) in his 10-year career. He also has averaged 28.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.0 steals and 40.0 minutes in 47 playoff games (all starts).
Last season, Booker averaged 25.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 37.3 minutes in 75 regular-season games. — Field Level Media/Reuters

CJ Perez dedicates PBA Philippine Cup Finals stint to young dreamers

San Miguel's PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup finals run means more than basketball for CJ Perez. The flashy guard said he's dedicating his and his Beermen's return to the championship round to young basketball aspirants especially those who struggle to chase opportunities in Manila because of a lack of resources, like he once did. "Dine-dedicate ko 'tong finals na 'to para sa mga batang nangangarap kagaya ko, 'yung mga galing probinsya na mga takot pumunta dito sa Maynila kasi natatakot silang walang matirhan or hindi sila makuha," Perez said during the finals press conference on Friday. "'Yun 'yung isang inspiration ko na may mga players from other provinces na walang budget pumunta dito, hindi nila alam kung paano sila maguumpisa, 'yun 'yung isang inspiration ko." "I dedicate these finals to the kids who dream like me, those from the provinces that are scared to come here to Manila because they are scared that they won't have a place to live or that they wouldn't earn a spot... That's one of my inspirations, the players from other provinces who don't have the budget to come here, they don't know where to even start, that's one of my inspirations.] Perez is marching on to his fourth PBA finals and chasing a potential third title with the franchise. The former NCAA MVP first tasted a finals appearance back in the 2022 Philippine Cup, when the Beermen went all the way winning the title against, incidentally, TNT. In Season 48, they made the finals twice but had contrasting results after ruling the Commissioner's Cup against Magnolia and bowing to Meralco in the Philippine Cup finals that allowed the Bolts to capture their breakthrough crown in history. It was a tough ride for San Miguel in the ongoing Season 49 as they failed to make the Governors' Cup finals before missing the playoffs for the first time in 10 years in the Commissioner's Cup. But behind Perez and other core members of the Beermen, San Miguel is now back in familiar territory as they take on the Tropang 5G in the Philippine Cup finals. And just being on this big stage is already an honor for Perez, as he hopes to inspire the younger generation in their pursuit of a basketball dream. "Being in the finals and playing basketball, 'yung nilalaro mo 'yung mahal mo, it's an honor," the 31-year-old Perez said. UST, La Salle boot out EAC, Arellano to complete FilOil Preseason semis cast

University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University pulled away late to stun Emilio Aguinaldo and Arellano University, respectively, in the 18th FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup quarterfinals on Friday. The second-seeded Growling Tigers pulled off an 82-73 win against the Generals to make the FilOil Final Four for the first time since 2013 while the Green Archers dominated the Chiefs with a 95-77 victory as they completed an all-UAAP semifinals cast. UST will take on National University in their bid to win a breakthrough FilOil title while DLSU will have an early playoff rematch with its tormentor in last year's UAAP finals, University of the Philippines. Gelo Crisostomo shone for UST with a huge double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds while Kyle Paranada and Koji Buenaflor each chipped in 12 markers. For DLSU, Mason Amos had a near-perfect 5-of-6 shooting from the field to finish with 15 points while JC Macalalag and Kean Baclaan each chipped in 12 markers as they halted the Chiefs' five-game winning streak. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Caster Semenya wins appeal against Swiss Federal Tribunal ruling

The Grand Chamber of the European Court on Thursday upheld a 2023 ruling that double 800 meters Olympic champion Caster Semenya's appeal to a Swiss Federal Tribunal against regulations that barred her from competing had not been properly heard. Semenya is appealing against World Athletics regulations that female athletes with differences in sexual development (DSDs) medically reduce their testosterone levels. The verdict of the Grand Chamber, part of the European Court of Human Rights, does not set aside these rules. Under World Athletics rules, female DSD athletes must lower their level of testosterone to below 2.5 nmol/L for at least six months to compete. This can be done medically or surgically. Semenya, 34, is not seeking a return to the track and has turned to coaching, but says she is carrying on the fight for other DSD athletes, who she says are discriminated against. The verdict, which does not give an opinion on the fairness of the regulations, opens the door for Semenya to continue her challenge to the regulations, which she says are discriminatory. "It's a battle for human rights now," the South African recently told reporters. "It's not about competing. It's about putting athletes' rights first. It's about the protection of athletes." The Grand Chamber declared inadmissible Semenya's complaint of violations to her right to privacy and effective remedy, or that she considers herself a victim of discrimination. Semenya challenged the rules but lost at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland in 2019 and again at the Swiss Supreme Court in 2020. But the ECHR ruled in July 2023, by a majority of four votes to three, that Semenya's original appeal to a Swiss Federal Tribunal against the regulations had not been properly heard. The Swiss courts, encouraged by World Athletics, appealed that verdict to the ECHR Grand Chamber. The case could now return to the Swiss courts, or possibly the Court of Arbitration for Sport. World Athletics told Reuters on Thursday they had no comment on the ECHR case, which does not relate to their regulations, but they have previously denied any attempt to discriminate against athletes. "World Athletics has only ever been interested in protecting the female category. If we don't, then women and young girls will not choose sport. That is, and has always been, the Federation's sole motivation," the sports body said in a previous statement to Reuters. "We remain of the view that the DSD regulations are a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of protecting fair competition in the female category as the Court of Arbitration for Sport and Swiss Federal Tribunal both found, after a detailed and expert assessment of the evidence." — Reuters
