New Delhi [India], May 31 (ANI): Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh announced that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has significantly shortened timelines for key processes in the military equipment procurement cycle as part of sweeping reforms aimed at boosting efficiency and advancing India's goal of ' Aatmanirbharta ' in the defence sector, as per an official release.Speaking at a defence conclave in the national capital on Friday, Singh stated that the decision will save an overall 69 weeks, noting that the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 is being revisited to reflect current realities, shifting from the traditional nomination-based cost-plus procurement to a competitive pricing model where both public and private sectors can vie for orders. This approach is already being implemented for shipbuilding and recently for the AMCA project, he added.Singh's remark followed serious concerns raised by the Chief of Air Staff and Air Chief Marshal AP Singh during his address at the CII Annual Business Summit 2025 on Thursday over persistent delays in defence projects, the systemic issue of unrealistic timelines, and their impact on operational readiness.Air Chief Marshal pointed at the recurring pattern of delays in project execution and criticised the practice of committing to unachievable deadlines in the context of the reported ongoing challenges with projects like the delivery of the aircraft.Singh emphasised the critical role of self-reliance in preserving India's strategic autonomy and achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat while urging private industries to invest heavily in research and development (R&D) and capital equipment to strengthen the domestic defence ecosystem.Deliberating upon India's Defence Vision, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said that it centres around Aatmanirbharta for preserving the strategic autonomy of the country. It is also critical in achieving the broader goal of Viksit Bharat, such as expanding our GDP from the current 4 Trillion Dollars to 32 Trillion Dollars by 2047, growing our manufacturing sector, enhancing India's start-up culture and widening our industrial base, generating employment and also its spin-off benefits that come from the dual use of technology. He underscored the impact of indigenisation over the past decade, stating that India has transitioned from being the top importer in 2015 to becoming one of the top 25 exporters today. Over 100 Indian companies are now exporting to 100-plus countries. The list of products includes missiles such as Brahmos, rocket launchers like Pinaka, simulators, armoured vehicles, the Dornier aircraft, different types of ships, offshore patrol vessels, etc. The upsurge in exports can be gauged from the fact that our exports have grown 30 times in the last ten years to Rs 23,622 crores in the last financial year. Our defence industry today includes 16 Defence PSUs, 430 licensed companies and approximately 16000 MSMEs. Domestic defence sales also increased from Rs 43746 crores in 2014 to Rs 127000 crores in 2023-24.Singh also highlighted record achievements in the financial year 2024-25, noting that the MoD has completely utilised the defence modernisation budget for the first time in the past five years and signed contracts worth a record Rs 2 lakh crores during the last financial year, which is the highest ever achieved and double that of the figures for 2023-24.This would ensure that the armed forces' modernisation process keeps pace. It would also help the Ministry demand a higher share in the union budget, leading to a minimum defence to GDP ratio of 2.5 per cent in five years as a first step and thereafter to 3 per cent in the medium term.

Rising inventory glut creates uncertainty in India's automobile retail sector
The Indian automobile industry is staring at a worrying build-up of unsold inventory at dealerships , casting a shadow over what has otherwise been a robust post-pandemic production run. According to the Economic Times, an estimated ₹52,000 crore worth of vehicles remain unsold — a figure that points to a growing disconnect between wholesale dispatches and actual retail sales . According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) , inventory level is currently hovering at 52–53 days across several segments, significantly higher than the industry's healthy benchmark of 30–35 days. Mounting costs and margin pressures For dealers, the consequences of ballooning stock levels are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Higher inventory translates to a direct rise in carrying costs — including financing charges, insurance, and storage — all of which erode already thin margins. With capital locked in unsold vehicles, cash flow becomes tighter, limiting the ability of dealerships to invest in staffing, service expansion, and technology upgrades. Many dealers are also being forced to offer steep discounts to clear ageing inventory, further eating into their bottom lines. OEMs not immune to the fallout Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) too face several downstream risks as excessive discounting risks diluting brand equity and resetting customer expectations for lower price points. An overburdened and financially stressed dealer network may struggle to maintain service quality and responsiveness, ultimately impacting customer experience and loyalty. In the longer term, OEMs could face market share instability if retail networks falter. Persistent misalignment between OEM sales targets and ground-level demand can lead to mistrust and churn within the dealer network. Sustainability and structural risks The current scenario poses a serious challenge for small and mid-sized dealerships. Prolonged pressure on margins and rising operational inefficiencies — including pre-delivery inspections and vehicle lot management — could push weaker players to exit or consolidate. Such trends may reduce competitiveness and diversity within the dealership ecosystem. Call for strategic rethink To stem the tide, industry experts are urging OEMs to adopt a more demand-driven approach to production and dispatch. Real-time data analytics could help better align wholesale planning with actual retail traction. Moreover, stronger dealer support mechanisms — such as inventory funding, interest subvention schemes, and buy-back programmes — are being recommended to ease the working capital burden. Bolstering digital retail platforms and diversifying dealer revenue streams through expanded offerings in used cars, after-sales services, and insurance products can help in enhancing long-term viability. Looking Ahead As the Indian auto sector continues to navigate a complex demand environment amid economic uncertainty , geopolitical tensions and shifting spending patterns, a more collaborative and transparent OEM-dealer relationship will be key. Balanced production planning and financial support will be essential to ensure that dealerships remain profitable, agile, and resilient — especially in the face of rapidly evolving consumer preferences. A robust, financially sound retail network is not just a sales channel, but a critical pillar of sustainable industry growth.

Shinde chants 'Jai Gujarat', draws flak from Oppn
Mumbai: Deputy chief minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde on Friday ended a speech at an event in Pune attended by union home minister Amit Shah with the slogan 'Jai Gujarat', setting off a controversy with opposition parties slamming him and alleging that his real face had been revealed as he had shown his loyalty to Shah who hails from Gujarat. Shinde, however, defended the action in the evening, saying he had simply hailed the Gujarati community as he was attending their function. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurates the newly constructed Jairaj Sports and Convention Centre in Pune on Friday. Maharashtra deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar also present. (ANI) Shinde, while addressing a gathering during the inauguration of the Jairaj Sports and Convention Centre in Pune, built by the Gujarati community, ended his speech saying, 'Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Gujarat.' His remarks came amid a row in Maharashtra over the imposition of Hindi in schools and violent incidents in Bhayandar and Pune, wherein shopkeepers and traders were attacked for refusing to speak in Marathi. After videos of Shinde's speech surfaced on social media, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut referred to the Shinde-led Shiv Sena as (Amit) Shah Sena, and said, 'It is not surprising. Shinde's Sena was born in Gujarat with Shah's blessings.' Raut was referring to events during the split in the Shiv Sena in 2022, when Shinde and MLAs from his faction were holed up in Surat. The Shiv Sena (UBT) MP also posted two separate videos of Shinde's speech in Pune on social media, saying, 'Shah Sena! Amit Shah's duplicate's Shiv Sena's true face was exposed today. In Pune this man (Eknath Shinde) gave the slogan 'Jai Gujarat'! What to do? How can this man remain in the Maharashtra cabinet.' NCP (SP) national spokesperson Clyde Crasto said though the Shiv Sena claimed to represent the Marathi manoos, they were lusting for power and trying to please Amit Shah. 'When Eknath Shinde was made chief minister, many projects meant for Maharashtra went to Gujarat. Now, it is proved that Shinde was working for the benefit of Gujarat,' Crasto said. State Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe said Shinde was only saluting his master Amit Shah as he wants to become chief minister again. Shinde, who reached Mumbai in the evening, clarified his stand in a hurriedly convened press conference. The function had been organised by the Gujarati community and he was only appreciating them for building a sports complex which could be used by all, the deputy chief minister said. 'The Gujarati community has been living here for decades and contributed to the progress of Maharashtra,' Shinde said. He also showed a video of Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray purportedly speaking at a function in Gujarat, where he too said 'Jai Gujarat'. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis supported Shinde, saying leaders make remarks at functions they attend according to the sentiments of people in front of them. Hailing Gujarat was not the same as hating Maharashtra, he clarified. 'If Shinde has said so, it does not mean that he has no love for Marathi. Leaders speak according to the sentiments of people sitting in front of them. It is a narrow minded thought to criticise him for it,' Fadnavis said. Even Sharad Pawar had said 'Jai Karnataka' while inaugurating the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Chikodi in Karnataka in the past, he noted, adding, 'That does not mean that he loves Karnataka more than Maharashtra.' Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut responded to Fadnavis' remarks, saying Thackeray and Pawar had hailed Gujarat and Karnataka respectively when they were speaking in those states. 'In the case of Shinde, he spoke in Pune which is in Maharashtra. What was the need to utter the slogan except to appease someone,' he said. Meanwhile, NCP – the third major partner in the ruling alliance – said the controversy should have been avoided. 'Eknath Shinde is a responsible politician. It would have been better if he had avoided this,' said NCP spokesperson Sanjay Tatkare.
