Court grants bail to two arrested in NEET fraud

Hindustan Times24-06-2025
MUMBAI: A special CBI court has granted bail to Sandeep Shah and Salim Patel, who were arrested by the agency earlier this month for allegedly taking money from medical aspirants by promising admission. The court observed that nothing has been brought on record against the accused to show that they will not be available for trial. (Shutterstock)
As per the CBI, the duo along with others allegedly promised to influence the officials of National Testing Agency (NTA) to manipulate the score of NEET UG 2025 exams to ensure admission in government medical colleges. The agency alleged that Shah and Patel along with another person, Javed Patel, received ₹ 75 lakh and ₹ 32 lakh through hawala channel.
The counsel, representing Shah and Patel, submitted that the investigation was completed and their custodial interrogation was not required. They said that the duo will not tamper with the prosecution evidence and will be available for trial.
The CBI opposed the plea, submitting that Patel introduced Shah to two persons - Neeraj Kumar and Prem Ranjan from Bihar - as National Testing Agency (NTA) officers, who are yet to be intercepted.
The two accused were arrested after police officers, pretending to be parents of medical aspirants, called up Shah, who allegedly demanded 90 lakh per candidate to be paid to NTA officials for manipulating the NEET marks. The court, however, said that 'there is no specific reference of ₹ 90 lakh per candidate or settlement of ₹ 87.5 lakh in the transcript'.
The special sessions judge, VP Desai, in an order passed on June 21, had observed that the investigating agency neither recovered any cash nor any Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets from the men during police custody. The court said, 'Even today, the investigating officer has nothing concrete to show that till what period the other accused will be arrested. Merely because the other accused persons are yet to be arrested cannot be a ground for rejection of the bail.'
The court further said that the punishment prescribed under the prevention of corruption act is not less than three years, adding that 'discretion in the nature of bail can be exercised in favour of the applicant on certain terms and conditions'.

10.83 lakh girls receive INR 924 crore financial aid, enrolment up by 16% under Gujarat's Namo Lakshmi Yojana

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat government on Wednesday said the enrolment ratio of girl students has seen a sharp rise of 16 per cent because of the 'Namo Lakshmi Yojana' which was launched last year to promote education among girls from economically weaker sections. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the scheme in 2024 with an aim to enrol more girls in Classes 9 to 12, reduce the dropout ratio, help them in their education and thereby empower these female students. Under the scheme, the government provides Rs 50,000 over a period of four years to girls who would complete Classes 9 to 12. This scheme is applicable to girls whose family income is less than Rs 6 lakh per annum, said an official release. A senior official of the state Education Department said the scheme has achieved the goals as envisioned by Patel. During the last one year, Rs 924 crore in financial assistance has been distributed to 10.83 lakh eligible female students from Classes 9 to 12 under the Namo Lakshmi Yojana, said Principal Secretary, Education Department, Mukesh Kumar. "This scheme was launched with an aim to encourage education among girls studying in secondary and higher secondary schools. Under the guidance of our CM Bhupendra Patel, this scheme has met with huge success," he noted. "During the last one year, we have disbursed Rs 924 crore in assistance to nearly 10.83 lakh female students. Moreover, the enrolment ratio of girls in these standards have increased by 16 per cent, which proves that the scheme is successful in meeting its objectives," said the bureaucrat. Akshara Diwan, a Class 11 student from Mehsana district, said the financial assistance provided by the government helped her in purchasing textbooks and other study materials. "I want to study further because I want to become a police officer. I am using the fund received under the scheme for purchasing textbooks, stationery and other study materials," said Diwan. Shailesh Prajapati, a beneficiary parent from Mehsana who works as a potter, thanked CM Patel for introducing this scheme. "Financial crunch is the main issue poor people like me face everyday. Thanks to this scheme launched by our CM Bhupendra Patel, my daughter can study further and finish her school without worrying about money. Her education will not be affected due to my financial condition," said Prajapati. Ready to navigate global policies? Secure your overseas future. Get expert guidance now!

Shah, a partner at tax and legal advisory firm PPS & Co., told ET that there are cases where Indian residents sent cryptocurrency directly from their digital wallets to the wallets of real estate developers in Dubai. 'This violates FEMA regulations,' he said, adding that such cross-border deals bypass authorised dealer banks and fall outside LRS some cases, buyers moved cryptos purchased overseas to settle payments. While these digital assets may have been bought with tax-paid money, moving them via blockchain to buy property abroad, without routing through a bank, can still be considered a violation of Indian exchange control reasons behind such methods vary. Some used crypto to avoid hefty currency conversion fees or India's crypto taxes. Others wanted to preserve their LRS limit or had earlier bought crypto through foreign platforms, which is generally not allowed under Indian TROUBLE LOOMSMany of these individuals did not declare the properties in their income tax returns. Once that happens, the assets can be attached or confiscated, and there is no option to settle the matter by paying a fine.'A probe under PMLA will come into play if the I-T department establishes a violation under the Black Money Act, which is a scheduled offence,' an official said as quoted in the ACCEPTED DIGITAL COINSDubai developers have long accepted cryptocurrencies for property purchases. Harshal Bhuta, partner at the CA firm P. R. Bhuta & Co, explained that developers there regularly accept popular cryptos like Bitcoin and Ethereum.'Indian buyers may prefer crypto for the speed and lower fees. These transactions do follow some checks under the anti-money laundering and KYC rules in the UAE. But what is legal under Dubai law isn't automatically allowed under FEMA,' Bhuta warned that depending on the way the payment was structured, the buyer could end up violating several Indian rules, including the breach of LRS limits and use of unapproved cross-border payment modes. As investigations deepen, what was once seen as a convenient way to own a piece of luxury abroad may turn into a legal headache for many.- Ends advertisement
