India U19 held to draw by England U19 in first Youth Test
Chasing a stiff target of 350, England ended on 270/7 in 63 overs, frustrating the visitors' push for a win that would have given them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Shaikh was the mainstay of England's resistance, scoring a composed 112 off 140 balls with 11 fours and two sixes here on Tuesday.
He received crucial support from Ben Mayes, who struck a steady 51 off 82 balls (3x4s), and wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew, who chipped in with a brisk 50 off just 35 balls (8x4s).
India had threatened to force a result when they reduced England to 62/3 in the 14th over but the hosts fought back through Shaikh's partnerships with Mayes and Rew.
With an hour left on the final day, India gave themselves hope by pulling off two run outs in successive overs -- first removing Shaikh and then sending back Ekansh Singh in the next over.
But Ralphie Albert (9 not out of 37 balls) and Jack Home (7 not out off 36 balls) showed commendable composure under immense pressure as India threw everything at them with an all-out attacking field.
Close-in fielders crowded the batters with two slips, a silly point, and a short leg forming a tight cordon, but the English pair held their nerves to survive the final overs and secure a hard-fought draw for the hosts.
Earlier, India U-19 resumed their second innings on 128 for three and posted 248 in 57.4 overs, setting England a daunting target.
Vihaan Malhotra top-scored with a gritty 63 off 85 balls, hitting 10 fours.
He and overnight partner Abhigyan Kundu looked settled before Alex Green (2/67) struck twice in quick succession, removing both while Rahul Kumar (11) also got out cheaply as India slipped from 171/3 to 187/6.
With the visitors in danger of a collapse, RS Ambrish played a crucial knock of 53 off 71 balls, adding valuable runs with the tail.
He was the last man to depart, run out as India folded for 248.
India U19, led by Ayush Mhatre, had earlier claimed the five-match Youth ODI series 3-2.

"I would pick Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav. Arshdeep is a good left-arm bowler who can move the ball in the air and off the wicket, which is crucial in English conditions. He can also reverse swing the ball, which is important. I have seen him bowl," he added. Pacer Arshdeep Singh is yet to make his debut for India in the longest format. As Jasprit Bumrah can miss the fourth Test due to his workload mangament, there are chances that Arshdeep can get his maiden Test cap. On the other hand, Kuldeep Yadav is also yet to feature in the Playing XI in the ongoing series. There were talks of getting included in the second Test but the team chose Washington Sundar instead of him. The fourth Test between India and England will kick-start from July 23 in Manchester.

The third Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England ended with a 22-run win for the hosts on Monday (July 14). In reply to the 193-run target set by the English team, India, despite an unbeaten 61-run knock from 181 balls by Ravindra Jadeja, could only manage to score 170 runs in 74.5 overs. Jadeja, who tops the ICC Test all-rounder's ranking, tried his best with the bat to keep India's chances alive of securing a famous win at the Home of Cricket, but he failed to seal the deal. Despite not being able to help India get the better of England in the Lord's Test, Jadeja earned a lot of praise for his knock from fans and experts of the game, but his twin half-centuries (72 and 61) were not enough to help him bag the Player of the Match award. Instead, the POTM award in the third India-England Test was won by England Test captain Ben Stokes. The 34-year-old all-rounder, who shared the dressing room with Jadeja during his time as a Chennai Super Kings player in IPL 2023, scored 44 and 33 runs in two innings of the Lord's Test and picked up 2 and 3 wickets. In the first innings, he added 88 runs for the sixth wicket with Joe Root (104) to help England post a total of 387 runs, and in the second innings, he dismissed Akash Deep (1), KL Rahul (40), and Jasprit Bumrah (5) to win the match for the home team.
