Chinese football legend Li Tie loses his appeal against corruption sentence

The high court in Hubei province rejected the appeal and upheld the original sentence for the former head coach of the men's national team.
Li, who formerly played in midfield for Everton in the English Premier League and represented China in the 2002 World Cup, had lodged an appeal 10 days after being sentenced on December 13.
He had been convicted of taking more than 110 million yuan (US$15.1 million) in bribes between 2015 and 2021, having pleaded guilty to the charges in a trial in March last year.
An intermediate court in Hubei had handed down the original sentence, which was one of the heaviest penalties imposed in the nationwide clampdown on the sporting sector.

Taiwan family of 5 perish in landslide; son survives after staying home to care for grandpa
A tragic accident in southern Taiwan has evoked widespread sympathy after a car carrying five family members plunged into a valley, claiming all their lives – including a baby and the father, who initially escaped from the vehicle but lost his life in a desperate attempt to save his family. The only survivor was the family's 14-year-old son, who had stayed home to care for his grandfather and consequently avoided the ill-fated trip. The incident occurred on July 30 in the Taoyuan District of Kaohsiung, when a car carrying a 33-year-old man, surnamed Li, his 37-year-old wife, surnamed Wu, and their three children – including a 17-year-old daughter, a three-year-old son, and a one-month-old baby girl – plunged nine metres into a mountain ravine. Rescuers subsequently recovered the bodies of the father and his 17-year-old daughter, and efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining missing family members. Photo: Handout The road had been severely eroded due to days of continuous heavy rainfall. At the time of the accident, it was pouring rain and visibility was extremely low, exacerbating the hazardous conditions. Life had already been challenging for the family. Li worked as a mould maker, while Wu took on various odd jobs to support their children. Their 17-year-old daughter had just undergone surgery and rehabilitation in May following a bicycle accident. The family was on their way down from their mountain home for follow-up medical appointments, including a check-up for their one-month-old infant. During the tragedy, Li initially managed to escape from the vehicle and climbed out of the valley to seek help three times, as reported by Taiwan EBC News. The first time, when the vehicle was still stranded, he asked a nearby driver to use headlights to illuminate the scene. The second time, he begged rescuers to save the children still trapped in the car.

11 new arrests over fatal Serbian train station disaster involving 2 Chinese companies
Eleven people, including a former minister, were arrested in Serbia on Friday over a train station disaster in which 16 people died. The concrete canopy of the newly renovated station in the northern city of Novi Sad collapsed on November 1, 2024, in a disaster widely blamed on corruption and poor oversight. It sparked a wave of student-led protests and led to the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and the fall of his government. The public prosecutor's office in Novi Sad opened an investigation into the accident and deaths. In February, the public prosecutor's office for organised crime opened another probe into the corruption aspect of the case, leading to Friday's arrests. The 11 include former construction, transport and infrastructure minister Tomislav Momirovic as well as former acting director of the state-run Serbian Railway Infrastructure company Nebojsa Surlan, prosecutors said. Another former transport minister, Goran Vesic, who was one of the first to resign after the accident, was wanted in the case but was hospitalised on Thursday, prosecutors said. The news site said Vesic underwent emergency surgery on Friday. Two companies — China Railway International and China Communications Construction (CRI-CCC) — as well as France's Egis and Hungary's Utiber were in charge of the railway station works. According to the prosecutor's office, the two former ministers and three other suspects enabled CRI-CCC to charge more than US$1.2 billion for work and then carry out additional work worth more than US$64 million. This enabled CRI-CCC to obtain an 'illegal financial gain' of more than US$18 million, the statement said. Since the accident, protests have been growing across Serbia, with some bringing hundreds of thousands of people to the streets to demand a transparent investigation and early elections. Thousands of people rallied in new protests late Friday in several cities, including the capital Belgrade, to commemorate nine months since the accident. 'It's a fight against the system, for which human lives are worth less than the amounts thrown around in the public tenders,' one student taking part in a demonstration in the city of Novi Sad said.

Spurs beat Arsenal in Kai Tak north London derby
Spurs beat Arsenal in Kai Tak north London derby Spurs claimed the Herbalgy Trophy with their win over Arsenal in their friendly at Kai Tak Stadium. Photo courtesy of the Hong Kong Football Festival Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur delivered a slice of football history on Thursday by staging the first North London derby outside the United Kingdom as nearly 50,000 fans packed Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium for a pre-season friendly. The mouth-watering clash proved so popular that around 20,000 people turned up just to watch the two teams train, underlining the rarity of Premier League local rivals facing off in pre-season friendlies. Despite tickets costing as much as HK$2,499, fans considered the historic occasion worth every penny as the North London rivalry finally crossed continents. "I'm extremely excited. Firstly, watching Arsenal, it's my second time. I was excited then, I'm still excited now, but this is the North London Derby," said Khalid Saleh, a 33-year-old Arsenal fan from Perth. "This is the one game where we're very nervous ... It's probably a childhood dream, man, to come watch a North London derby." The match ended 1-0 to Spurs with their Senegal midfielder Pape Matar Sarr scoring the winner late in the first half with a spectacular strike from near the centre circle after he spotted goalkeeper David Raya off his line. For many Arsenal fans, the main attraction was watching their 76 million euros (US$86.72 million) Sweden striker Viktor Gyokeres making his debut, part of the club's close-season spending spree approaching 200 million pounds (US$263.94 million). Wearing the iconic number 14 shirt, Gyokeres came on as a late substitute, welcomed onto the pitch with a huge roar that echoed around the stadium, which had its roof closed. "We just signed a new striker, probably the first (specialist) striker we signed since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang," said Mo Muse, an Arsenal fan from Melbourne. "We're feeling super, super confident, obviously. Probably one of the best transfer windows." Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said he was 'amazed' by the support, thanking them for their patience after Arsenal returned to Hong Kong for the first time since 2012. "It just makes you feel how wonderful and big this football club is and how lucky we are to have the support with the level of intensity as well that people love our football club here, so it was great to witness," Arteta said. Spurs supporters, meanwhile, were eager to see their captain Son Heung-min, with many fearing it could be their last chance to watch the 33-year-old South Korea forward in the club's colours amid transfer speculation. "Sonny has stayed for a decade in Tottenham," said Spurs fan Patrick Lau, who held a placard with pictures of the talismanic forward. "No matter whether Sonny decides to stay or maybe move to the next chapter, we are so glad that Son has stayed for Tottenham for a decade. He is our legend forever!" Simba, a Spurs fan from Hangzhou, said he bought tickets for the match mainly to watch Son, who also came on as a substitute. "I came because Son Heung-min might leave the team," he said. "I hope to see him a few more times and watch him one last time, as he's my favourite player." (Reuters)
