Anthony Mackie Says an Unreleased Film From the ‘Worst Director to Ever Direct' Almost Cost Him His ‘Hurt Locker' Role: ‘They Offered It To Somebody Else'
During a recent episode of Variety's 'Know Their Lines,' Mackie shared the backstory behind being cast in the 2009 Oscar-winner.

''Hurt Locker' is probably one of the most important acting experiences I had,' he began. 'We shot that in 2007, and I remember I was doing a movie in North Carolina with quite possibly the worst director to ever direct. Ironically, because of that the movie never came out.'
He continued, 'Because of that, the movie went over and I had to pull out of 'Hurt Locker.' They offered it to somebody else, and he said no because it wasn't enough money.'
Despite Mackie being tied up with the other film, the production offered him the role again and was willing to wait until he wrapped the unreleased project.
'I went from this sucky director who had no business in being in the business or in the director's chair to Kathryn Bigelow,' Mackie said. 'The moment I landed in Amman, Jordan, we hit the ground running [with] cultural research, military research, character studies – the real work a director does. It really was poignant to me the type of people I want to work with and the type of people who shouldn't be working.'
Mackie's performance in 'The Hurt Locker' was a career-defining role as he played Sergeant J.T. Sanborn, a soldier and member of the fictional bomb disposal unit in Baghdad, Iraq.
The film received widespread critical praise for its portrayal of the war in Iraq. At the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010, 'The Hurt Locker' took home six awards from its nine nominations for best motion picture, best achievement in directing, best writing, original screenplay, best achievement in film editing, best achievement in sound mixing and best achievement in sound editing.

Actor Zenzo Ngqobe on breaking into international films and staying relevant
He is a seasoned actor whose career earned him accolades such as an Oscar for the film Tsotsi, in which he played the role of Butcher. I enjoy being in feature films,' he quips coyly. Like most of his industry colleagues, being on a daily show means stability. 'For me, daily shows only make sense for a monthly paycheck, but I'm mostly interested in making movies,' he shares. 'I never wanted to stay long on a daily show, and also because of the hectic schedule that comes with being on a daily show.' He concedes that when he joined a daily show, he was much younger, and one of the drawbacks of being on a daily show is that 'they don't allow you to be doing other things, so your freedom is limited.' 'Also, if you stay longer, for example, 20 years, you struggle to get a job in other shows, because they associate you with your previous role, it becomes difficult to break away from your role,' he explains. On a sad note, he recently lost his friend and colleague, Presley Chweneyagae, with whom he worked on Tsotsi and The River, who died, and he delivered an emotional speech at his funeral. 'You know I'm strong, but you've made me weak, boy. Each role you played, you did with passion, and you taught me a lot about the craft,' he said.

Tom Holland Breaks Silence On James Bond Rumours With Intriguing Comments
There's been an interesting development in the ongoing speculation about who the next actor to play James Bond will be. For the past year, it's looked like Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been the frontrunner to land the role of 007, following Daniel Craig's departure from the franchise at the end of No Time To Die. Aaron himself hasn't exactly always (or, indeed, ever) been keen to talk about the rumours, but his name has repeatedly come up in press reports about which star will be cast as Bond next. However, back in June, Variety published a piece citing 'insiders' who claimed that the team behind the iconic spy franchise is looking to cast a 'British actor under the age of 30', in the hopes of showing a new side to the character, throwing doubt on Aaron's casting for the first time (as well as that of other rumoured contenders like Henry Cavill, Regé-Jean Page and Aaron Pierre). Variety's article specifically mentioned three names, Jacob Elordi (who, of course, is Australian, but that's seemingly not an issue), Harris Dickinson (who is now probably best known for his role opposite Nicole Kidman in the erotic thriller Babygirl) and Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland. Tom has now spoken out about the rumours for the first time, and he's not exactly issued a denial. During a conversation on, of all places, Gordon Ramsay's YouTube channel, Tom was asked about the Bond rumours, to which he responded: 'Listen, there's speculation at the moment. We'll keep it to a minimum for now. We will get there one day.' 'Every young British actor [would love the opportunity],' he continued. 'It's the pinnacle of working in our industry. 'I already consider myself to be the luckiest kid alive. I could never have dreamed [of having] the career that I have.' Tom is currently shooting the latest Spider-Man movie, while Variety's article suggested fans shouldn't expect to see the next Bond film until around 2028. Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve will helm the next instalment in the James Bond series, once he's completed work on the third Dune movie, which is about to go into production. The writer of the next 007 film was also announced last week, and it's exciting news for fans of prestige British drama. ‘I Have To Break The Cycle.' Lindsay Lohan Gets Real About Being Limited To Certain Roles In Hollywood

Lindsay Lohan first graced the silver screen decades go when playing twins in The Parent Trap when she was 12. From then on, she landed starring roles in rom-coms and Disney flicks. After a six-year hiatus from playing lead roles, Lindsay Lohan made her acting comeback by teaming up with Netflix for Falling For Christmas and Irish Wish. She's also back in her Disney roots with the long-awaited Freaky Friday sequel, Freakier Friday. Looking back on her career, though, Lohan does indeed believe she was limited in certain ways. It goes without saying that Lindsay Lohan is still booked and busy during this new chapter in her life. She's even starring and producing her first TV drama, Count My Lies. This new project could serve as a pivot in Lohan, who's other dramatic projects are low-key titles like A Prairie Home Companion Georgia Rule and I Know Who Killed Me. Lohan recently sat down with the The Sunday Times, during which she talked about the trajectory of her career. As part of that, she also answered the question of whether she thinks she's been pigeonholed: Yeah, I do. I was so thrilled to work on A Prairie Home Companion, and yet even today I have to fight for stuff that is like that, which is frustrating. Because, well, you know me as this — but you also know I can do that. So let me! Give me the chance. I have to break that cycle and open doors to something else, leaving people no choice. And in due time, if Martin Scorsese reaches out, I'm not going to say no. It's a shame that early in her career, Lindsay Lohan wasn't given the opportunities to star in Oscar-worthy dramas. Sure, the former teen idol has plenty of comedic chops, which have been on display in great films. However, she was and is still capable of driving me to tears. Even her family-friendly movies like The Parent Trap and Life-Size get me in my feels. In Count My Lies (which will be streamable with a Hulu subscription), Lohan will play a conniving nanny, and that role could show her complexity and range as an actress. In turn, the opportunity could possibly pave the way for more varied acting jobs. Lohan's Hulu show, which will mark a 'first' in that she won't have a romantic interest, isn't the only matter on her mind. Dark material isn't the only kind of work she's looking to do. In fact, Lohan name-dropped a few icon films when explaining what kind of roles she's looking for. I also can't deny the argument she makes: I miss films that are stories, like All About Eve or Breakfast at Tiffany's. There are not many major movies I want to go and see that are like that — there's a gap and I'm craving to do work like that. Honestly, I can't say I blame Lindsay Lohan for seeking out such work. After all, those aforementioned movies are classic for a reason, and films like those are arguably in short supply these days. Such productions are not only are they simply entertaining, but they feature strong storytelling and complex characters. Given her statements on the movies and her career, it sounds like Lohan is prepared to control her own destiny and seek out (or create) varied roles for herself. Quite frankly, I love to see it. It's wild to say this, given how long Lohan has been working but, now more than ever, it feels like the world is her oyster. As a longtime fan, I can't wait to see what she does now that she's made it her goal to expand her professional horizons. More immediately, fans can look forward to watching Lohan light up the screen in the 2025 movie release, Freakier Friday, which opens in theaters on August 8th. Solve the daily Crossword
