George Springer's big bat helps Blue Jays upend Yankees

George Springer hit a grand slam and a solo homer and collected a career-high seven RBIs Tuesday afternoon as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting New York Yankees 12-5 on Canada Day.
Andres Gimenez added a three-run homer for the Blue Jays, who have won the opening two of a four-game series. Toronto moved within one game of the first-place Yankees in the American League East.
Jasson Dominguez had three RBIs for New York.
The Yankees scored two in the first against Kevin Gausman. Paul Goldschmidt singled and Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton walked to load the bases to set up Dominguez's two-run single up the middle.
Max Fried didn't allow a hit over the first three innings before Springer led off the fourth with a homer to left center on a 2-2 curveball. The inning continued when Davis Schneider was given an infield hit on a chopper to third and Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s throw was wide of first. Myles Straw walked and Gimenez homered to center on a fastball down the middle to give the Jays a 4-2 lead.
Nick Sandlin took over in the sixth from Gausman, who allowed two runs, six hits and four walks with three strikeouts in five innings.
Fried retired his final seven batters and allowed four runs, three hits and two walks while striking out two in six innings.
The Yankees scored twice in the seventh to forge a 4-4 tie. Cody Bellinger led off with a single and Judge was intentionally walked by Justin Bruihl. Chisholm's grounder forced Judge at second. Braydon Fisher (2-0) took over and consecutive fielding errors by third baseman Ernie Clement and first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each resulted in a run.
Mark Leiter Jr. (4-6) entered in the Toronto seventh and allowed Gimenez's one-out single and a Tyler Heineman walk. Luke Weaver replaced Leiter and pinch hitter Addison Barger reached first on catcher's interference to load the bases. Clement lined an RBI single off shortstop Anthony Volpe's glove. Springer followed with his ninth career grand slam on a blast to left center.
Geoff Hartlieb walked in a run and allowed Springer's two-run single in the home eighth.
Toronto's Yariel Rodriguez allowed a run in the ninth.
Prior to the game, Toronto recalled Leo Jimenez and optioned Jonatan Clase to Triple-A Buffalo. Jimenez started at shortstop on Tuesday and was 0-for-2.

Yankees RHP Clarke Schmidt expected to undergo Tommy John surgery
(Photo credit: John Jones-Imagn Images) One day after he was placed on the injured list with forearm tightness, it was determined that New York Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt likely will undergo Tommy John surgery. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Saturday afternoon that Schmidt has a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow. 'He's obviously devastated and bummed out,' Boone said. 'But Clarke's way is you've got to flip the script. He's getting his mind into, 'Let's get it fixed and get on with it and start to get after the rehab portion of it.' I think mentally, that's where he's at.' Schmidt, 29, had an MRI exam Friday after being removed from Thursday's game at Toronto after three innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks with one strikeout in the 8-5 loss. He is 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA through 14 starts. He has 73 strikeouts and 30 walks in 78 2/3 innings. Schmidt is 23-24 with a 3.82 ERA in 97 career appearances (67 starts) since making his debut with the Yankees in 2020. A Tommy John procedure would be the second for Schmidt, who also underwent the surgery in 2017 as a junior at South Carolina shortly before the Yankees selected him in the first round of the draft. New York also added right-hander Scott Effross and left-hander Jayvien Sandridge to the active roster Friday. Both relievers allowed two runs in the Yankees' 12-6 loss to the Mets on Saturday.

Garcia, 34, is 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 22 relief appearances for the Blue Jays. In 11 seasons with five different clubs, including his first five with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Garcia is 23-31 with a 3.61 ERA in 436 appearances (one start). Pina, 26, made his major league debut June 20 as a member of the Miami Marlins and went one inning in his only outing, giving up a home run to the Atlanta Braves' Austin Riley. Elks search for their first win of the season against Redblacks

As an 18-53 overall record and ghastly 5-30 home record attest, none of it has worked. Edmonton (0-3) will make another attempt at its first win of the year Sunday night when it hosts the Ottawa Redblacks. The Elks nearly stunned Winnipeg on the road June 27 but gave up an unlikely 13-yard rushing touchdown to veteran quarterback Zach Collaros with 5:42 left that sealed a 36-23 loss. 'We've gotten better three weeks in a row but it's about winning and it's about doing the things that we need to get better to be on the other side of this result,' said first-year Edmonton coach Mark Kilam. Wasted in the loss was a solid performance from quarterback Tre Ford, who was 18 of 29 for 252 yards and a touchdown. His 68-yard strike to Kaion Julien-Grant sparked a third quarter comeback that forged a 23-23 tie. While the Elks are seeking their first win, Ottawa (1-3) was denied its second straight win on June 29 when Toronto came into town and took a 29-16 decision. The Redblacks also lost top receiver Bralon Addison to a shoulder injury that will keep him out of at least the next two games. The good news for Ottawa is that starting quarterback Dru Brown (hip) appears ready to return from a three-game absence after being injured in a Week 1 loss at Saskatchewan.
