Celebrating 55 Years Of Suzuki ALLGRIP
Monster Mountain: 97 acres of pure off-road delight, nestled deep in the Welsh countryside, and the perfect place to test Suzuki's range of ALLGRIP cars. It's a tough circuit, filled with boulders, sharp stones, water-logged areas and steep angles, usually reserved for MX motorbikes.
Suzuki's 4x4 heritage dates back to its 1970 LJ10 model, the very first Jimny, a car adored by many in Europe and Asia. Throughout the years and to this day, Suzuki has designed 4x4 vehicles that slot into almost any lifestyle.
Suzukis are largely sold in Europe, Japan and India, where the company holds a 49 percent market share. The brand backed out of the U.S. in 2013.
What's Suzuki ALLGRIP?
Unlike some off-roaders that weigh almost as much as a tower block, the whole point of Suzukis is that they remain nimble and easy to drive when in or out of the rough stuff. And it's all thanks to the brand's trick four-wheel drive system known as ALLGRIP.
There are three vehicle-dependent systems on newer Suzuki cars: ALLGRIP Auto, the fully automatic setup found on the Suzuki Swift, which uses a viscous coupling that links the front and rear axles. ALLGRIP Select, an electronically activated system, often found on Vitara and S-Cross models, that allows the driver to select between various drive settings.
Suzuki Grand Vitara 1.6
And finally, E-Four. This is found in Suzuki's plug-in hybrid range and uses an independent 40kW rear-mounted electric motor, which works with a front motor to prodive front: rear torque variation ranging from 100:00 to 20:80. Many older Suzuki models feature a part-time four-wheel drive system with low-range selection.
Then there's trail mode. This is an automatic limited slip differential that gives the car ample grip over slippery surfaces. This system works by applying the brakes to the wheel that begin to slip and redirects torque to the wheels that have grip. It will also adjust the throttle and transmission shift pattern to keep the vehicle moving.
Is The Suzuki ALLGRIP System Any Good?
All test vehicles were fitted with standard road tyres, suspension and brakes.
First, a 2005 Grand Vitara V6 from Suzuki's heritage fleet. A more than capable beast, even today. These were available in either three or four-door bodies, and with diesel or gasoline powerplants. The V6 topped the range.
At launch, it cost £11,500 ($15,567 today). A light throttle jab pulled me up some of Monster Mountain's steepest terrain, through deep puddles and over the sharpest of rocks, things some modern 4x4s would cry puddles of oil at.
Suzukis
At the opposite end of the spectrum was the next test vehicle: a 2025 Suzuki Swift ALLGRIP. With its slightly lifted suspension, this mighty little machine had no issue tailing the Vitaras through deep puddles and up steeper terrain, although it was more suited to one of Monster Mountain's smaller meandering dirt tracks. Here, it behaved more like an off-road buggy.
Finally, the 2024 Suzuki Jimny, a car that's sadly no longer in production. The Jimny is an incredibly capable machine, despite having only a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, but with just 95 lb ft, it did require a fair bit of driver input when climbing steeper terrain.
A very dirty Suzuki Swift
Suzuki has built many cars throughout the years, but the 55th anniversary of ALLGRIP is a celebration of Suzuki's 4x4 forte and is a large milestone as the brand continues towards electrification.

Drivers trapped in cars for hours in heat as festival goers descend on field
Drivers were left 'roasting' in the midday heat as a local rock festival caused major traffic jams. The Steel House Rock Festival took place over the weekend at the Hafod-y-Dafal Farm, Aberbeeg, Ebbw Vale. Drivers left gridlocked by festival traffic on Aberbeeg Road (Image: NQ) The classic rock festival has been taking place for 15 years and is running from Friday until Sunday, with headliners Wildhearts, W.A.S.P and Lita Ford. On Friday at around 12pm, Aberbeeg Road saw huge swarms of festival goers that blocked the road for other drivers. The traffic in the area was severely delayed for well over an hour. Drivers left gridlocked by festival traffic on Aberbeeg Road (Image: NQ) At some points drivers were completely 'gridlocked' some even taking the chance to leave their vehicles and stretch their legs. Many of which were festival goers who decided to crack open a 'cold one' whilst waiting for the traffic to die down. Eventually, traffic picked up pace and many people were able to break through after queuing for what seemed like an 'eternity.'

A More Affordable EV Won't Save Tesla
Key Points Tesla fell 5% after hours on its second-quarter earnings report. Some investors saw production of a new, more affordable vehicle as a positive sign. The company launched its robotaxi network in June. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) issued another disappointing earnings report on Tuesday. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The leading electric vehicle (EV) maker finished the after-hours session down 5%, but the sell-off could have been worse. The company reported a decline in both sales and profit. Revenue was down 12% to $22.5 billion, and adjusted net income was down 23% to $1.39 billion, or $0.40 per share. Those numbers actually topped a muted revenue estimate at $22.13 billion, while the bottom-line consensus matched the results at $0.40. Tesla's problems have been well-documented at this point. CEO Elon Musk's turn in the political spotlight seemed to backfire after his relationship with President Donald Trump went sour. Due in part to Musk's involvement with politics, the brand has become unappealing in the eyes of some potential buyers, leading to a 16% decline in automotive revenue. Sales have plunged in Europe, and the company is losing ground to more affordable Chinese EVs. One seemingly bright spot Musk has a long history of overcoming weak results by telling investors what they want to hear on the earnings call, including making big promises about its robotaxi network and other initiatives in autonomy like its Optimus robot. He seemed to do that again on the latest earnings call, with some comments about the more affordable model he has long promised, which some have dubbed the Tesla Model 2. Musk said that the company started production of the vehicle in June and is ramping up production now. He added: "The goal with those products was not to negatively impact revenue or gross margin, but just to make a car that everyone loves and wants at a more affordable price." Musk has long argued that price competition was one of the biggest headwinds facing the company, but the brand crisis seems to have overshadowed that. By introducing its own lower-priced model, Tesla may end up cannibalizing its more expensive vehicles. Customers may be choosing between a more expensive Tesla and that lower-priced model, rather than another brand. The new vehicle is just a cheaper Model Y, rather than a brand-new vehicle model. The robotaxi initiative The biggest reason Tesla has maintained its premium valuation even as sales and profits have tumbled is that investors believe that Tesla's robotaxi network could go mainstream, fulfilling Musk's long-term vision. However, the robotaxi has gotten off to only a modest start after launching in June, and it seemed to get less attention on Tuesday's earnings call, though Musk reminded the audience: "As you can tell, autonomy is the story." Management said that robotaxis in Austin, Texas have topped 7,000 miles with no significant safety interventions. The company is aiming to launch the robotaxi in the San Francisco Bay Area next. Tesla needs growth in its core business Investors have bid up Tesla stock on hopes for its initiatives in robotaxis and more affordable vehicles, but the company needs to return to growth in selling EVs for the stock to be successful over the long term. The decline in EV sales is a reflection of a backlash against Tesla's brand. The company is also expected to struggle over the next few quarters due to the elimination of the EV tax credit and a change in other federal policies that supported EV adoption. The company also faces a $300 million effect from tariffs. Tesla could get back on track, especially if the robotaxi network takes off. But the current valuation in the stock leaves little room for upside if it does, especially given the persistent challenges in EV sales. While a more affordable vehicle might be a step in the right direction, it seems more likely to undercut demand for Tesla's more expensive vehicles, rather than competing with alternatives.
