
Leaving Cert: Teacher gives reaction to biology exams
Liam Hennelly, a biology teacher at Belvedere College in Dublin said the Higher Level paper gave students plenty of choice and allowed them to show off what they know.

"Some of the questions were challenging in places and required an in-depth knowledge of subject material, as you would expect with any Higher Level paper," he said.
"In Section A, the short questions, the topics of Food & Biomolecules, Plant Structure, Respiration, Cell Structure, Bioprocessing, Digestion and the Scientific Method came up.
"In Section B, the experiment questions, students faced questions on Ecology, Movement Through Membranes and Leaf Yeast.
"In Section C Q. 13 on metabolism, photosynthesis and enzymes was quite straight forward. Q.15 was a lovely question on Ecology but in part (b) (iv) 1. students needed to be very careful to draw the predator-prey relationship graph with the curves out of phase with each other.

"There were 4 questions on Human Biology on the paper that students could have attempted for 200 marks out of 400 or 50% of the exam. This would have been a relief for a lot of students. Overall, this was a very student-centered, fair and current paper that would have been well received."
Mr Hennelly said the Ordinary Level paper had a wide selection of questions ranging across a broad number of topics.
"Short questions included Food, Ecology, A True/False Question, Cell Structure, Tropisms, the Nervous System and Mitosis. Experiment questions included Food Tests, Enzymes and Factors that Affect Germination.
"The long questions gave students a lot of choice across Ecology, Genetics & Protein Synthesis, Photosynthesis & Respiration, Plant Structure, Human Reproduction and microbiology amongst other topics. Overall - the paper was very fair and accessible and students had a lot of choice."

Simple-looking math equation sees people guess some very topsy-turvy answers - can you solve it in 30 seconds?
Unless you do it in your day to day job, math can be very easy to avoid once you graduate from school. Suddenly those long, complicated equations that your math teacher swore would be trivial are so easily forgotten. Calculators are just a tap or two away and you no longer have to concern yourself with solving complex formulas or even simple multiplication off of the top of your head. Well, until now. See if you can recall back to the days of elementary arithmetic and solve this compound sum using only your brain. Better yet, do it in 30 seconds or less. Bholanath Dutta posted this sum on X and it seemed to leave people stumped for even longer. What's the answer to 70 ÷ 5 - 5 x 3? How did you do? If you remembered to refer to the mathematical acronym PEMDAS, you're on the right track. PEMDAS stands for parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division, and addition and subtraction. It demonstrates the right order in which to solve a math equation like this one. Using PEMDAS, we know to solve for multiplication and division in this problem first. 70÷5=14 and... 5x3=15 Now the remaining problem is: 14-15=-1 If -1 was your answer, then you're correct. If not, there are a few ways you could have accidentally turned the solution on its head. Solving the problem left to right is a common one. 70÷5=14 14-5=9 9x3=27 In this instance, it can be helpful to picture parenthesis around the division and multiplication problems. That way you don't forget to solve them first. Maybe you started with subtraction in the middle or even took the equation from right to left. Either way you're in good company. People in Bholanath Dutta's comment section came up with 27, 21, and even 33. But at least now, the next time you decide to tease your brain, you certainly won't forget PEMDAS.

Trigger warnings ‘have no meaningful impact' on students
Trigger warnings that tell students they may find a lecture distressing do not make them feel safer and have no meaningful impact on how they engage with difficult material, a study has suggested. Researchers tested the effects of trigger warnings and other pre-lecture notices on 738 students in the US who listened to a talk on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They found no evidence that a trigger warning improved students' sense of psychological safety or trust in the lecturer, or their willingness to discuss controversial topics. However, when a speaker said their classroom was a 'safe space' and that students could leave if they felt distressed, students later reported having felt more comfortable. They also rated the lecturer more positively, albeit while also perceiving them as more politically liberal and supportive of censorship. The results may stir debate in universities. For years, trigger warnings have been used in an effort to help students, particularly trauma survivors, brace for potentially disturbing material. The new findings, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, suggest that they may be more symbolic than effective. Despite widespread support among students, trigger warnings simply did not achieve very much, according to Dr Victoria Bridgland, lead author of the study and a psychology lecturer at Flinders University in South Australia. 'Some people believe trigger warnings help students feel supported by the teacher,' she said. 'But our research shows they fail to do that.' Safe-space messages, by contrast, appeared to foster trust and openness. However, they also carried political signals that seemed to affect how students interpreted the instructor's political leanings. 'It's not just about the content being taught,' Bridgland said. 'It's also about the emotional and psychological climate in the classroom. 'This matters because small cues at the start of a lesson can shape how students feel and behave. The trigger warning said: 'Before we begin today's lecture, I want to issue a trigger warning. The content we're about to cover includes discussions about interpersonal trauma, such as sexual violence. This content may evoke a distressing emotional reaction for some people, particularly those with a history of trauma.' The safe-space notification took a different tone: 'Before we begin today's lecture, I want to emphasise to everyone that this classroom is a safe space. If at any point the material becomes too distressing, please feel free to disengage as necessary. It's essential to prioritise your emotional safety.' A third group of students received both messages, and a fourth received neither — just a neutral introduction to the topic. The lectures themselves were otherwise identical and professionally recorded, allowing researchers to isolate the effects of the introductory notices.
