IIT Kharagpur forms fact-finding panel after BTech student's death
Institute director Suman Chakraborty, who recently took charge, said the panel would explore academic, social and psychological factors and is expected to submit its recommendations soon.
While police are conducting a probe on its part, the institute has constituted a 10-member fact-finding committee internally, Chakraborty told PTI.
'He is our own child. We are saddened by his death. IIT Kharagpur does not exert pressure on students in a way that they feel stressed. We need to find out why such an incident happened," he added.
Chakraborty had met the father of the deceased and interacted with him for about an hour after the grief-stricken parent arrived at the campus on hearing the news of his son's death.
Mondal, a 21-year-old mechanical engineering student, had returned to campus on July 15, a day after the convocation, following a two-month vacation.
His roommate had not yet returned to the hostel.
'We have to think if there are social factors involved in such incidents," he said.
'If someone comes to the help of such pupils during moments of extreme mental stress, certainly such situations can be averted," he reasoned.
The committee will come up with certain recommendations by this month, he added.
Mondal was found hanging in his room at Rajendra Prasad (RP) Hall hostel on July 18, the fourth unnatural death case on the campus since January.
'There were no recorded indicators of mental health concerns in the records of the SARTH Counselling Centre. Additionally, the departmental faculty advisor reported no apparent academic or personal issues," the institute noted.
On January 12, Shaon Malik, a third-year electrical engineering student, died by suicide.
On April 20, Aniket Walker, a final-year Ocean Engineering student from Maharashtra, was found hanging in JC Bose Hall.
On May 4, Mohammad Asif Qamar, a third-year BTech student from Bihar, was found dead in his room at Madan Mohan Malviya Hall.
Apart from installing bar codes on the gates of every hostel room where the helpline number of counselling services can be scanned by a student in emotional stress at any hour, the institute recently launched a 'Campus Mothers' programme, where women faculty and staff members serve as emotional mentors for students. One of the men threatened to call the police by dialling 112. Another individual, who was recording the scene on his phone, was confronted by the woman. She rushed toward him, tried to snatch his phone, and hurled expletives at him. She was heard saying, 'Maiyaan ch*d dungi do minute mein," a remark that has since sparked outrage online. Staff at the petrol pump and other customers present did not intervene in the dispute. Three Indian tourists in Thailand called the police to their Pattaya hotel room late at night following an argument with a bar girl over her looks. The men claimed they were unhappy because the woman's 'chest was too small" and wanted her to leave the hotel room. According to Pattaya Mail, the tourists told police that the woman had entered their room and refused to leave. However, the woman gave a different version of events. She said they had agreed on a price and she was only asking for the rest of her payment before leaving. What exactly happened? On July 18, around 2:30 AM local time, Pattaya police were called to a hotel on Soi Pattaya Beach 11 after receiving a request from the Indian tourists. When they arrived, they found a woman between 35 and 40 years old. She appeared surprised and said she didn't know why the police had been called. She explained that she had met the men at a local bar and agreed to a price of 3,000 baht (around Rs 8,000) per person. After getting a deposit of 1,000 baht (about Rs 2,000), she went with them to their hotel. But once they were in the room, the men began criticising her looks. They said her appearance did not match what they had imagined and pointed out that her chest was 'too small". The woman agreed to leave but asked for the remaining payment. Instead of paying her, the men said they were going to withdraw cash, but went to the police instead. They complained that she was refusing to leave the room. How was it resolved? Pattaya is a popular tourist destination in Thailand, especially known for its nightlife and red-light areas, drawing millions of visitors every year. In this case, the tourists admitted they had hired the woman from a local bar. But after an argument over her looks, they approached the police when she reportedly asked for her full payment. Police officials asked both sides to settle the issue peacefully and warned that legal steps would be taken if needed.
