Oklahoma Sooners advance to Super Regionals with 12-1 win over Cal
The Oklahoma Sooners advanced to the Super Regional round of the NCAA tournament for the 15th consecutive season following a 12-1 win over the California Golden Bears.
It was a clean sweep for the Sooners, who won each of their three games in run-rule fashion, including twice over Cal.
Sam Landry was again fantastic, allowing only an unearned run over three innings to move to 22-4 on the season and lower her ERA to 2.00. Isabella Smith and Peytn Monticelli threw the fourth and fifth innings to close out the win and send the Sooners to the Super Regionals.
Oklahoma jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Gabbie Garcia's 18th home run of the season in the top of the second. Three batters later, Ailana Agbayani hit a three-run home run to put Oklahoma ahead 4-0. Cal responded with a run in the bottom of the second after a throwing error, but Landry was able to limit the damage, stranding a runner at third base.
The Sooners failed to capitalize with runners in scoring position and less than two outs in the top of the third. However, a baserunning mistake from Cal, allowed Oklahoma to get out of the bottom of the third on a fly ball which led to a double play.
In the fourth, the Sooners ran away with the game with eight runs. Abigale Dayton drove in Agbayani from second and advance to second on the throw. With runners on second and third, Kasidi Pickering hit her 17th home run of the season and her third home run of the regional round to put Oklahoma up 8-1. Ella Parker followed that up with a solo shot for her 12th home run of the season to make it 9-1. Singles by freshmen Riley Zache and Corri Hicks gave Oklahoma an 11-1 lead and Hannah Coor capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to the wall to make it 12-1.
Smith and Monticelli didn't give Cal much to work with and continued the strong postseason work by the Sooners bullpen.
Over the three-game set, Oklahoma outscored their opponents 31-3. Now, they await the winner of the Tuscaloosa Regional. The final between Alabama and Virginia Tech was put in a weather delay. The Crimson Tide are looking to close out the weekend without a loss, while the Hokies will have to beat the Tide twice in order to earn an opportunity to play in Norman next weekend.

Elite 5-star PF Ashlyn Koupal provides recruiting update, lists Spartans as a finalist

Michigan State women's basketball has been named one of five finalists for an elite power forward prospect in the 2026 class. Ashlyn Koupal of Wagner, S.D. has reportedly named her five finalists and Michigan State is in the mix, according to Dushawn London of 247Sports. The Spartans are joined by Nebraska, TCU, Kansas and Duke as finalists for the elite power forward prospect. Koupal is listed as a five-star power forward, with a recruiting rating of 99.56 in 247Sports' composite rating system. She is ranked as the No. 3 power forward and No. 9 overall prospect in 247Sports' rankings for the 2026 class. She is also ranked as the top player from South Dakota in the class. Koupal has previously named her top five schools -- which included each of these same schools mentioned as finalists. But another notable update from London's recent reporting is that it sounds like she is nearing a decision. 'Each school has done their best to show me what it's going to be like and how I'll fit, so now it's about how I feel about all of them," Koupal told London. There is no scheduled commitment date at this time for Koupal so we will just need to continue to monitor her recruitment in anticipation of a big decision coming. Michigan State women's basketball has had a resurgence over the past two seasons under new head coach Robyn Fralick, and landing a commitment of Koupal's nature would truly push them into the upper tier of the Big Ten. This could be a massive recruitment for the Spartans and the quickly evolving program under Fralick. Red Sox sign star righty with 99 MPH fastball to $5 million contract

The Boston Red Sox got a gem. At pick No. 15 in the 2025 MLB Draft last week, they landed Kyson Witherspoon. The right-handed pitcher out of Oklahoma was projected by almost everyone to go in the top-10. And now, the Red Sox signed him just under slot value, getting him for a $5 million signing bonus, per Jim Callis (slot was $5.11 million). The assessment from Callis: "Best college RHP in MLB Draft, fastball to 99 mph, one of best curves in Draft, slider & cutter are weapons too." Sounds pretty great. But Witherspoon is a guy Red Sox fans will enjoy following as he climbs the ladder. And as a proven college pitcher out of the SEC, Witherspoon could move pretty quickly. He's officially signed, and his journey to Boston has begun.
