Beckham humbled by knighthood as King's Birthday Honours list released
Actress and singer Elaine Paige and novelist Pat Barker have been given damehoods.
Sir David, who has been in the running for a knighthood for more than a decade, said in a statement to the PA news agency: 'Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour.
'To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career, and literally a boyhood dream come true.'
He had been on the verge of receiving a knighthood in the 2014 New Year's Honours list but HM Revenue and Customs placed a red flag on his nomination due to his involvement in an alleged tax avoidance scheme, according to previous reports.
In 2021 it was reported that his finances had been cleared and he was eligible for a knighthood.
The day before Sir David was given the honour, he was seen chatting with the King at a St James's Palace ceremony for the monarch's foundation, of which the retired footballer is an ambassador.

He has been made a knight for his services to sport and to charity, having partnered with Unicef and campaigned with Malaria No More, a charity working to eradicate the disease.
Sir David, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday, said: 'Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation.
'I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment.
'It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.'
Sir Roger, who co-founded The Who in 1964, has been recognised for services to charity and music, having been a patron of Teenage Cancer Trust since 2000.
He told PA: 'It's strange, it's an experience that I've never had before, I'm very humbled by it.'
The 81-year-old led the Teenage Cancer Trust at Royal Albert Hall concert series for more than two decades.
'It's kind of weird, but I am deeply honoured to get this, especially for the charity for the Teenage Cancer Trust, and I accept it on their behalf really, because this honour is really for all unsung heroes,' Sir Roger said.
'It's a dream come true for me, but it's especially a dream because the charity means so much.'
Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman have been made MBEs, which Daly said was the 'greatest surprise of my life' (Ian West/PA)
Daly, 56, who has co-presented Strictly since 2004, and Winkleman, 53, who fronts the hit reality TV show The Traitors, have been honoured for their services to broadcasting.
'This genuinely came as the greatest surprise of my life,' Daly told PA.
'I don't think I've come back down to earth yet. I didn't see it coming, and it almost didn't happen because the letter went to the wrong address.
'And thank goodness someone very kind found me. And so by the time I got it, I only had, I think it was two or three days left to accept it.'
Winkleman said she was 'incredibly grateful' to receive the honour, adding: 'I will buy a hat and am taking my mum. I am ridiculously lucky and will celebrate with Tess by doing a paso doble.'
Dame Elaine, 77, was also honoured for her services to charity and music.
She told PA of her 'shock' at being made a dame.
'It's all very exciting,' the West End legend said. 'I've got all these different emotions coming at me all at once. I'm proud and I feel grateful and I'm thrilled and surprised, and so it's been quite a lot to take in.'

Dame Elaine has presented her BBC Radio 2 show for more than 20 years and has senior roles at two charities – The Children's Trust, a charity for youngsters with acquired brain injury and The Dan Maskell Tennis Trust, which supports disabled tennis players.
Meanwhile, Sir Gary, 67, who played Harry Potter's godfather Sirius Black in several of the movies in the fantasy franchise, was recognised for his services to drama.
The Hollywood star won an Oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the 2017 film Darkest Hour.
The top gong goes to Sir Antony Gormley, the sculptor behind the Angel of the North, who is made Companion of Honour for services to art.
There are only 65 Companions of Honour at any one time.
More than 1,200 people from across the UK received honours in the latest list.
Political figures named include Penny Mordaunt, who is made a dame.
The former defence secretary said: 'It is lovely to be appreciated in this way, and I'm very conscious that everything I have ever got done has been with the help and efforts of others.'

Stars of the big and small screen who have been recognised include EastEnders actress Anita Dobson, Academy Award-nominated actress Samantha Morton and Georgia Harrison, a Love Island contestant turned campaigner.
Dobson, 76, and Morton, 48, have been made Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Best known for playing pub landlady Angie Watts in EastEnders, Dobson has been recognised for philanthropy after years of being patron of charity Thames Hospice.
An MBE for Harrison marks another achievement in the year her ITV documentary Georgia Harrison: Porn, Power, Profit came out.
She is recognised for services to tackling online privacy after she waived her right to anonymity to campaign following the conviction of her former partner Celebrity Big Brother winner Stephen Bear, who shared a private film of them having sex.
The TV presenter told PA: 'It means the world to have this kind of recognition, not just for me, but for all the survivors who've been through what I have.'
Tracy-Ann Oberman, who has also been in EastEnders, and played Auntie Val in Channel 4 sitcom Friday Night Dinner, has been made an MBE for services to Holocaust education and combating antisemitism.
Obermann, 58, said: 'This recognition is deeply meaningful and I'm grateful to all who have supported this journey'.

The oldest person on the list is 106-year-old William Irwin.
A veteran and the founder of Coleraine Winemakers Club, Mr Irwin was recognised for his services to the community with a BEM.
The youngest recipient, 11-year-old disability campaigner Carmela Chillery-Watson, has been made an MBE for her charity work.
Carmela, who has LMNA congenital muscular dystrophy, has become the youngest ever MBE for her fundraising for Muscular Dystrophy UK, for which she has helped raise more than £400,000.

In what is thought to be a first for the honours, three members of the same family have been named in the same list.
Jenna, her mother Caroline and her father Duncan Speirs have each been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM).
The trio founded children's cancer charity Calum's Cabin after Jenna's twin brother Calum died of an inoperable brain tumour aged 12.
Campaigners who have fought to tackle the rise of knife crime in the country have also been recognised for their work.
Pooja Kanda, whose 16-year-old son was murdered with a ninja sword yards away from his Wolverhampton home has become an OBE, while Alison Madgin, the mother of 18-year-old Samantha Madgin, who was knifed to death in Wallsend, is made an MBE alongside her daughter Carly Barrett.
Women make up 48% of those honoured, with 11% of recipients are from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Martyn Latchman, 38, flew to Istanbul to have a five-hour operation on Monday at Dr. Cinik's clinic in the city's Besiktas district. He is said to have suffered complications while undergoing the hair transplant procedure. His body was later taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy before being repatriated to the UK. Police have launched a probe, treating the case as a possible 'reckless homicide'. Staff at the clinic — including the surgeon who performed the hair transplant, the anaesthesiologist and nurses — have already been quizzed by officers, it is understood. An FCDO spokesperson told The Sun: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Turkey and are in contact with the local authorities." Tributes are now pouring in from friends and family for Mr Latchman, whose body has since been flown home. Yashley Latchman posted a picture of keen athlete Mr Latchman on Facebook with the pair working out in a gym. The caption read: "Rest in peace my brother. You will forever be my source of inspiration and motivation. "Thanks for everything. We will miss you loads." Love Island's Ben reveals hair transplant at just 22 years old with before and after video Other family members turned their profiles black in a sign of mourning for Mr Latchman, who was originally from Bridgend but lived in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. According to Dr Cinik Clinic's website, it has treated "more than 50,000 patients" since setting up almost 20 years ago. The website says the clinic has "cutting-edge technology" and is a "centre of excellence in this specialised field". It adds: "Every patient gets personalised care in English, plus access to cutting-edge techniques. "The combination of surgical experience and patient support has made him the go-to specialist for people worldwide." 5 Brit underwent a five-hour operation at the Dr Clinik's clinic (pictured) The tragedy comes amid a boom in 'medical tourism' to Turkey, which now accounts for nearly 60 per cent of the global hair transplant market thanks to its cheaper, high-quality procedures. Turkish Healthcare Travel Council says more than one million people travel to the country each year for hair restoration treatments. According to Dr. Serkan Aygin Clinic, numbers are expected to climb to 1.1 million in 2025, the Daily Mail reports. It follows the shocking death of 58-year-old British mum Anne Towlson, who passed away last year after a botched cosmetic surgery trip to Istanbul. Mrs Towlson, from Leicestershire, had flown to Turkey in April 2024 for a pre-planned tummy tuck and liposuction at Green Park Hospital in Pendik. When she arrived, doctors persuaded her to also undergo an arm tuck in a 'last-minute decision', her inquest heard. But she quickly developed alarming complications. BOTCHED OP Meanwhile, a British man was left scarred and with bald patches after a botched hair transplant in Istanbul. Luke Horsfield, then 26, paid £1,250 for the surgery at the Clinic Centre — around half the cost of a UK procedure — but said the results were disastrous. 'I did everything they told me to do as aftercare once I had the operation. But after four months, I saw literally no growth,' the IT technician from Bradford said. 'I was left with scars and bald patches.' Luke claimed the surgeons barely spoke English and had removed too many follicles from the back of his head, leaving him worse off than before. Despite the clinic's promise of 'transplant after care', he said he struggled to get hold of anyone once the operation was over. After months of disappointment, the clinic eventually offered him a £400 refund — barely a third of what he had paid — and a second procedure at half price. Luke later had the damage repaired at a Yorkshire clinic.

Strictly Come Dancing star Wynne Evans splits from fiancée weeks after proposing
The opera singer hinted that his relationship with business owner Liz Brookes was "not healthy" Strictly Come Dancing's Wynne Evans has revealed he's parted ways with his fiancée Liz Brookes, just weeks after popping the question during a romantic Moroccan getaway. The Welsh opera singer hinted at an "unhealthy" relationship in a Facebook Live broadcast on Saturday, August 2, and confessed he's already dipping his toes back into the dating pool. Rumours of the couple's split started circulating last month when eagle-eyed fans spotted that Wynne had removed his engagement announcement from Instagram and stopped following Liz on social media. It now seems their romance has come to a definitive end. Insiders confided to the Daily Mail that the split was triggered by Wynne's hectic schedule since he decided to launch his own restaurant in his hometown of Carmarthen, whilst also kicking off his own radio show, set to be based in the eatery, reports the Mirror. The source disclosed: "Wynne and Liz called off their engagement a few weeks ago. The strain of his new business ventures led to a major disagreement. "Initially, there was hope they would reconcile once the bad feelings subsided, as they had broken up before and managed to mend things. "But with Wynne actively seeking new dates and publicly labelling the relationship as 'not healthy', it's safe to say they've permanently split this time." The Mirror has reached out to Wynne Evans' representatives for a statement. Liz, who operates a thriving events business in Wales, initially encountered Wynne in 2024 when he entertained guests at one of her company's corporate gatherings. She became a familiar face in the audience throughout his Strictly journey, frequently supporting him from the sidelines and posting encouraging messages across social media platforms. Wynne had previously credited Liz with motivating his fitness regime ahead of his BBC appearance, telling a podcast presenter: "I go out running with my girlfriend and stuff and I feel much better for it". Wynne popped the question to Liz in June, documenting the special moment on Instagram with a collection of photographs, including a detailed shot of her engagement ring. He wrote alongside the post: "Big news... I got engaged! This weekend in Morocco, somewhere between the couscous, the camels, and me limping around the souks like a man with no spatial awareness, I proposed to Liz - and she said yes! (No take-backs, I've checked.)". "She's clever, she's kind, she's got excellent taste in men. Absolutely no idea how I pulled that off, but here we are! Feeling very lucky, very happy, and just a tiny bit smug." The pair's split arrives during a challenging year for the Go Compare star, who was axed by the BBC earlier this year following a contentious "spit roast" remark during the Strictly live tour. While Wynne subsequently clarified the phrase related to fellow contestant Jamie Borthwick rather than presenter Janette Manrara as initially reported, he maintained he was compelled to issue an apology and has since severed ties with BBC Radio Wales. He has subsequently launched his own internet radio programme and established a wine bar and eatery called Welsh House by Wynne, which he pledged would feature MasterChef -style dishes on the menu as a tribute to his stint on the cookery programme.

James Bond star unrecognisable from 007 days as he transforms into boxing legend in new trailer
The new sports film has been executive produced by Rocky legend Sylvester Stallone and is based on the true story of 'Prince' Naseem Hamed A legendary James Bond actor looks completely transformed from his suave secret agent persona in his newest film project. Set to become one of next year's most compelling sports dramas, the trailer for Giant dropped this week to considerable excitement. With Rocky icon Sylvester Stallone serving as executive producer and Rowan Athale of Gangs of London acclaim both writing and directing, the preview delivers spectacular boxing sequences and gripping emotional moments. County Louth native Pierce Brosnan takes on the character of Brendan Ingle, the celebrated Irish trainer who guided British-Yemeni fighter Prince Naseem "Naz" Hamed (portrayed by Amir El-Masry) to championship glory. The film's official description states: "Charting his inspiring rags-to-riches underdog tale from his humble beginnings in Sheffield to becoming champion of the world and a global sporting icon in the 1990s, the film explores the unlikely and tender relationship between Naz and his Irish boxing trainer Brendan Ingle; and the instrumental role that Ingle played on his road to success", reports the Express. "With exhilarating and visceral scenes in the ring, coupled with deeply moving and intimate moments behind the curtain, GIANT is an inspiring biopic of one of the greatest showmen the sporting world has even seen - the untold true story of the boy behind The Prince." Brosnan delivers what appears to be a deeply emotional portrayal in the fresh footage, as he motivates Naseem to overcome challenges and silence his critics. In a dramatic departure from his iconic suave Bond image, the Irish actor has undergone a transformation, now sporting long, white hair with a bald patch and donning spectacles. Meanwhile, El-Masry, known for his roles in The Night Manager and SAS: Rogue Heroes, is set to become a familiar face as he secures one of his first significant film parts. As the buzz builds for what might be the year's standout sports movie, film enthusiasts have flocked to the comments section to express their thoughts on the trailer. One boxing fan enthused: "I love boxing movies. Especially one based on one of my fav boxers ever!!" Another concurred, saying: "Prince truly deserves to have a biopic of him." A third shared their excitement: "I'm so proud and excited can't wait to watch this masterpiece." "About time they made a movie about him," another chimed in, "He is the wildest boxer of all time." And one more added: "Anyone who grew up with Prince Naseem, knows he was one of the most exciting fighters the sport has ever seen." With the backing of none other than Sly Stallone, this boxing flick is sure to deliver a knockout experience. Giant will be released in UK cinemas on 9th January, 2026.
