Europe's largest inaugural tech, startup and digital investment event, GITEX EUROPE x Ai Everything, was held at Messe Berlin this week, with the UAE's innovation taking centre stage.
The three-day show, which concluded on Friday, brought together more than 1,400 exhibitors, 600 top global investors and over 500 speakers from 100-plus countries, together marking the strongest cross-border tech mobilisation the continent has seen.
National pavilions stretched from India to Italy, Morocco to South Korea and 35 European states, alongside participation from the UAE showcasing how the nation is becoming a global reference for technology advancement across multiple industries including governance and public service.
The UAE's IT services market is forecast to achieve record growth to reach $3.76 billion in 2025, according to fresh Statista data, a momentum that was impossible to miss on a show floor featuring 65 UAE organisations - the nation's biggest ever entrepreneurship and digital investment delegation to a European tech event.
The Ministry of Economy pavilion presented a cohort of home-grown tech ventures aimed squarely at addressing global challenges. Among them is Zeroe, delivering comprehensive carbon management to accelerate net zero goals; Hikmah Labs, merging AI with cutting-edge research to transform industries; IngenioData, deploying AR and BLE based indoor navigation, asset tracking and analytics; and Responsive Drip Irrigation, creators of the world's first plant-responsive irrigation system, which allows the plant to self-regulate its own water delivery.
Among the dignitaries inaugurating the momentous first European edition, Alia Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, shared in her welcome address: 'Germany is now the UAE's second largest trading partner within the EU. And Berlin as a global capital of innovation plays a central role in that story. It mirrors the trajectory; dynamic, diverse, and globally connected. Together, we are shaping a new economic corridor, one powered by innovation and grounded in common purpose.'
Joining the UAE delegation were Hazza Al Mansoori, the first Emirati astronaut to travel to space and Nora Al Matrooshi, the first female Emirati astronaut. Hazza Al Mansouri shared insights on the aerospace evolution in a media briefing, 'Artificial intelligence in space is something that we are experimenting with. For example, Simon, a floating robot, and making the lunar gateway, the space station more autonomous, because it's not going to be inhabited all the time.'
Organised by Digital Dubai, the Dubai Pavilion highlights the city's AI-powered evolution and advanced public services featuring 12 key government and private entities, including, Digital Dubai, Dubai Police, General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs (GDIFA), Dubai Civil Defense, DIFC Courts, the Dubai Electronic Security Center, the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, Dubai Customs, Dubai Future Foundation, and Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), alongside e& and Emaratech as Platinum Partners.
Among the top innovations on show include the Dubai Dashboard, a unified city-wide platform offering a 360-degree view of data and indicators across various city sectors; alongside the Dubai Monitor, DubaiNow, Smart Employee, and UAE PASS, the national digital ID that enables secure identity verification for citizens through facial recognition tech. Dubai Police presented its autonomous policing ecosystem including Ghaith, a smart patrol car. Also on showcase was Salama, an AI-powered platform that streamlines Dubai's residency services with automated renewals and instant visa assistance - making government interaction seamless and future-ready.

Hamdan bin Mohammed reviews outcomes of Sheikha Hind Family Prog

Reviewing the outcomes of the Sheikha Hind Bint Maktoum Family Program, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed emphasised that Dubai's development vision has always placed people at its very heart. Launched in September 2023 by the Community Development Authority (CDA) in Dubai to empower Emirati families and reinforce social stability through a comprehensive set of initiatives, the programme facilitates a host of benefits including avenues for psychological and social support, financial literacy, and direct assistance in meeting housing and other expenses incurred by new couples. Sheikh Hamdan applauded the success of the Sheikha Hind Bint Maktoum Family Program in reinforcing the foundations of social stability by supporting and empowering Emirati families through a series of integrated and high-impact initiatives. The programme aligns with the expansive vision outlined for various social empowerment programmes and their role in creating a lasting positive impact that supports the goals of the Dubai Social Agenda 33. The review of the programme is part of ongoing efforts to monitor the social empowerment agenda and ensure that various initiatives aimed at advancing those goals achieve sustainable impact in line with Dubai's strategic vision. Sheikh Hamdan said, 'The programme reflects our deep commitment to empowering our youth and supporting them in building a future that matches their aspirations. A stable family denotes a fundamental pillar in the development and progress of societies. We are committed to providing every prerequisite for young people looking to start a dignified family life – including suitable housing, financial support, enhanced employment opportunities, and expanded social care initiatives. We believe that investing in families is an investment in the nation's future, and we will continue working to provide a wholesome environment that ensures well-being and stability for all.' Praising participants in the programme, Sheikh Hamdan said, 'We commend the determination of the youth who have chosen to begin their family lives based on a clear foundation of awareness and responsibility – setting a proud example for a generation that knows how to shape its future through willpower, hard work, and initiative.' The Sheikha Hind Bint Maktoum Family Program has contributed to a significant increase in marriage rates among Emiratis. The Dubai Weddings initiative recorded a 218 percent increase in participation during 2025 compared to 2024, with the number of weddings held to date exceeding 700. Marriages facilitated through the Dubai Weddings initiative accounted for 27.7 percent of all marriages registered in the emirate. The results also indicated that the largest demographic of beneficiaries consisted of men aged between 26–30 and women aged between 20–25. The programme also recorded an impressive 95 percent beneficiary satisfaction rate. The programme offers extensive education and training sessions for couples as part of efforts to ensure the long-term success of marital relationships. Among notable highlights are Start it Right, a course promoting awareness of marital rights and effective approaches to foster mutual understanding; Family Financial Culture – Dubai, which focuses on sound financial planning; and How to Build Your Home, which offers guidance on smart and viable housing decisions. The programme's benefits extend beyond education, offering tangible solutions that meet real-life needs. It offers full coverage of wedding costs for both men and women when the ceremony is hosted in CDA-approved venues. It also facilitates priority access to ready-to-move-in housing through easy instalment payment schemes. Among other benefits are exclusive discounts on medical services, wedding essentials, jewellery, magazines, and travel. Another advantage comes in the form of a loyalty card under the Esaad programme that offers various community perks. There is also a remote work provision for newlywed female employees following maternity leave. Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, Director-General of the Community Development Authority in Dubai, emphasised that the Sheikha Hind Bint Maktoum Family Program reflects the vision of the leadership in placing family at the core of sustainable development. She noted that strengthening Emirati families is fundamental to building a cohesive and happy society. She stated, 'The programme's achievements are a source of pride. True investment starts within the Emirati household. Seeing young families embark on a key phase of life and welcoming new members into their families under the umbrella of this initiative proves that we are creating not just statistics, but real stories of secure and thriving beginnings. 'From awareness to empowerment, and from financial to housing support, we are offering a complete ecosystem that supports families at every stage of their journey. This aligns with the goals of the Dubai Social Agenda 33 and reinforces the city's role as an ideal environment for starting a family and building a future.' Thanking Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, for her generous patronage of the initiative, Buhumaid said, 'Dubai Weddings is more than just a scheme providing assistance – it is a gesture rooted in compassion and community spirit. 'Through this initiative, Sheikha Hind has touched the lives of countless youths, helping them start on the path of family with confidence and clarity. This initiative brought the true essence of social responsibility to life,' she said, reaffirming the Authority's commitment to continuously enhancing the programme through strategic partnerships, positioning it as a leading model for family empowerment and sustainable social development.

Early wins for US, but dynamics of EU alliance is changing

4 Aug 2025 23:55 SULTAN KHALIFA AL RUBAEI*Tariffs have once again taken centre stage in US and international trade, following the August deadline set by United States President Donald Trump for countries to present trade agreement proposals or face steep tariffs. The US administration secured deals with several of its trading partners, most notably the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom. However, the global trade landscape now appears to be bracing for profound changes in trade rules that go beyond the post-World War II US agreement with the EU included a 15% tariff on European goods (significantly lower than the 30% previously threatened by the US president), an exemption for pharmaceutical products, and limited exceptions for aircraft and medical equipment. In return, the EU committed to purchasing $750 billion worth of US energy products and investing approximately $600 billion in the US. This agreement secured substantial additional revenue for the American 'America First' policy pursued by the United States in its dealings with both partners and non-partners pushes it toward manoeuvring economic policies. But beyond the deals and manoeuvres lies US-European relations, particularly with the EU, the foundation of which is no longer only partnership, but also competition, or rather, the partnership is taking a backseat in the face of competition. This shift may be attributed to internal divisions among the EU's 27 member states, the multiple challenges facing the ageing continent, and the heavy reliance on the United States when it comes to defence forces. At this time, none of the EU countries can afford the economic strain of a trade the American side, the current administration has shown little regard for the mutual trust in the transatlantic free trade relations, nor for the existing rules of international trade. As a result, there is a possibility that other global actors may adopt similar protectionist policies, posing a threat to the stability of international markets, particularly in light of the tensions that the current environment may create at the level of international trade the changes and uncertainty, the EU chose to stay aligned with America, albeit at a high cost. The newly imposed tariffs place a heavy financial burden on EU-based companies, forcing them to bear additional billions in expenses. While EU member states acknowledge the agreement's potential harm to their economies, they have viewed it as the best possible option under the current circumstances. It may mark the beginning of a longer negotiation process rather than the end, given the limited options available. Without formal trade agreements with Washington, the EU risks being subjected to US terms, leading to imbalanced deals or potential trade United States emerged as the winner in the agreement with the EU. However, the outcome also places a burden on American consumers, who are likely to face higher prices for imported goods as companies pass on the additional costs. This is particularly significant given that Germany is one of the largest exporters to the US, with exports exceeding €161 billion in 2024. Ireland's exports to the US reached €72 billion and Italy's €64 billion in the same year, according to Eurostat, the EU's statistical office. In total, 20% of the EU's goods exports are directed to the United States. This makes the agreement the least damaging option for Europe to avoid a trade confrontation between two allies who together account for nearly one-third of global trade. The effects of this deal may become visible in the US market in the coming this agreement, the US aims to achieve economic balance and address its trade deficit with the EU, which reached $235.6 billion in 2024. Although the deal helps avoid a trade war, it shows that the dynamics of old alliances are shifting, international trade is being reshaped amid global economic uncertainty, and competition for each country to achieve huge gains has become a defining feature of today's international economic and trade relations. *The columnist is a researcher with the think-tank firm, TRENDS Research & Advisory
