Bungie delays Marathon to next year - developers only found out today

Metro17-06-2025
The makers of Destiny have announced that beleaguered online shooter Marathon is to be delayed beyond this autumn, in Sony's latest live service disaster.
It's been predicted for some time now, given the poor response to its various playtests, but developer Bungie has now confirmed that Marathon will miss its previously announced release date of September 23.
The extraction shooter has been widely criticised for not being as challenging as leading genre titles such as Escape From Tarkov but at the same time being too much for casual fans, effectively pleasing no one.
Bungie has acknowledged this, saying: 'We know we need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion.' There's no new release date but with no more news updates planned until the autumn, it seems to have missed its chance to launch in 2025.
'The Alpha test created an opportunity for us to calibrate and focus the game on what will make it uniquely compelling – survival under pressure, mystery and lore around every corner, raid-like endgame challenges, and Bungie's genre-defining FPS [first person shooter] combat,' reads the official annoucement.
'We're using this time to empower the team to create the intense, high-stakes experience that a title like Marathon is built around. This means deepening the relationship between the developers and the game's most important voices: our players.'
More closed tests are planned 'over the next few months', with Bungie focusing on 'upping the survival game' with new loot and more challenging AI encounters, in an attempt to make combat 'more tense and strategic'.

They're also promising a better experience for solo and duo players, as well as proximity chat. The visuals will also be improved, with a darker tone that 'delivers on the themes of the original trilogy.'
The original three Marathon games were Mac exclusives, released in the mid-90s, before Bungie hit it big with Halo. Although there's no formal connection with the Xbox games, the gameplay and multiplayer modes are similar, with the concept of AI rampancy shared between both series.
At the moment, there's little obvious connection between the new Marathon and the old ones, while there's been considerable controversy over Bungie plagiarising an online artist for the game's distinctive art style.
Although Bungie is currently owned by Sony the game is intended to be released simultaneously on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. More Trending
Marathon is the latest in a long line of live service failures for Sony, who once claimed they would release at least 10 such titles by 2026. The only success they've ever had is Helldivers 2, with everything else either being delayed or cancelled – with Concord being the most infamous failure.
Despite so many disasters, Sony has repeatedly insisted that live service titles will remain a major focus, at the continuing costs of its single-player output.
Since Sony acquired Bungie to not only make its own live service games, but to help advise on other studios' titles, the continued problems have raised concerns about the future of Bungie itself.
Poor management has consistently been blamed for the problems at Bungie, with Forbes contributor Paul Tassi suggesting that many Bungie developers only found out about the Marathon delay at the same time as fans.

Battlefield 6 is already better than Call Of Duty in terms of one major feature

EA keeps saying all the right things, as fans approve of the latest annoucement for this year's Battlefield 6. While Call Of Duty has always been the dominant military shooter, EA's Battlefield series has come close to challenging it on occasion – even if those days are a while ago now. EA clearly wants this year's Battlefield 6 to renew the rivalry with Call Of Duty, including giving it an autumn launch window, and so far it seems to be working, with many Call Of Duty fans expressing an interest in jumping ship. But Battlefield fans don't necessarily want the series to be exactly the same as Call Of Duty, far from it (especially when it comes to potential crossover skins) and EA has just made clear another important difference. In a statement to PC Gamer, EA has confirmed that while Battlefield 6 sports a hefty file size of 80GB, that's only for the complete experience and you can actually pick and choose which portions of the game to download. For instance, if you only care about the single-player campaign, then you can download that part of the game without the online multiplayer. Or vice versa if you have zero interest in solo play. 'There will be a shared base package, and then you can separately choose to install the main components (i.e. single0player, multiplayer, etc.),' EA explained, with the base package expected to come in at a much smaller 55GB. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. This isn't a new idea and is something Activision's been doing with the Call Of Duty games in recent years, in response to how much storage space they had begun to take up. However, the install sizes for Black Ops 6 are much bigger, at 128GB for the whole thing or 78GB if you already have COD HQ and Warzone installed. So Battlefield 6 is going to be considerably smaller. 'Never thought I'd see the day that EA makes pro-consumer choices. No forced launcher, staying true to IP, and putting in quality-of-life improvements. This is a great start, hopefully they keep it up,' writes one fan on Reddit. Another fan adds that customisable installs 'need to become the norm now if compression is going to go out the window,' highlighting things like language packs and 4K graphics packages that should be optional. 'It's crazy that they are saying all the right things and after that reveal event everyone who played it is backing it up,' says another, referencing the recently revealed multiplayer gameplay, which is so far making a good first impression among the community. Some still hold reservations, though, with one fan suspecting that Battlefield 6's file size will balloon with inevitable updates: '55GB at start and after 2 seasons 100GB.' More Trending Others also have difficulty believing EA's promises. 'They're saying a lot of pro-consumer/pro-Battlefield fan stuff but let's see them DO these things' says one, while another adds, ' Guys, don't believe anything EA says. The launch and following months is what will show the truth.' They're not entirely wrong. While a new game can make a very strong first impression, interest can quickly wane if certain problems aren't addressed. Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds, for instance, seemed like a future classic when it launched this February, but while it's still the best-selling game of the year overall, sales have sharply declined since. This can partially be attributed to fan frustration with how Monster Hunter Wilds runs on PC and, as a result, not only has the player count dipped, but the game's being outsold by much older Resident Evil and Devil May Cry games. Rare 40th anniversary merch is a depressing reminder of how far they've fallen

Attempts by Rare to celebrate its ruby anniversary double as a tragic reminder of the state of the studio under Microsoft. Given how often game studios get shut down nowadays, it's almost a miracle for one to successfully stay open for 40 years. Case in point: Sea Of Thieves developer Rare. Although there's no exact date for its founding, Rare has chosen today to celebrate its ruby anniversary, complete with an unveiling of a heritage plaque in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, the English hometown of Rare's predecessor Ultimate Play the Game. The studio has announced a handful of ways for fans to partake in the celebrations, including a fancy new Xbox controller that's available for purchase alongside a range of other merchandise. The new controller, courtesy of 8bitdo, sports the same blue and gold colouring as Rare's logo. While its pattern appears to only reference Sea Of Thieves, you can spot puzzle pieces and feathers on the controller too, alluding to the old Banjo-Kazooie platformers. You can buy the controller from 8bitdo's website, which does ship to the UK, although it will set you back $89.99, which is roughly £68, and that's not including any potential shipping costs. Rare has also partnered with Fangamer on a new range of merchandise, and the Xbox Wire news post mentions plans for a 40th anniversary vinyl collection from iam8bit and an Evercade cartridge collection of 12 retro Rare games. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Some themed cosmetics are coming to Sea Of Thieves as well, alongside the game's next season, Smugglers' Tide, which begins on August 14. This includes a 40th anniversary bundle and multiple ruby themed items (including a hat and an eyepatch). Plus, starting from August 6, the in-game store will see discounts on items inspired by old Rare games while Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will be able to claim an exclusive emote. Lastly, a celebratory piece of art featuring multiple Rare characters is available as an Xbox dynamic background alongside new profile pics for your account. 40 years of @ devoted Rare gamers to single-series stalwarts, we want to show our appreciation for anyone who's visited even just one of our worlds. For keeping an assorted ragtag of creatives working magic in the Midlands, only two words will do: THANK YOU 💙💛 — Rare Ltd. (@RareLtd) August 4, 2025 Such celebrations ring a tad hollow though, considering this comes just one month after Microsoft saw fit to let go hundreds of Xbox employees and cancel several projects. Rare itself wasn't untouched by this, with its next game – Everwild – amongst those cancelled. A new Banjo-Kazooie was also rumoured to be in the works, but that's apparently been canned too. More Trending And while he wasn't laid off, Everwild and Sea Of Thieves director Gregg Mayles, one of Rare's longest running staff members, opted to leave the studio at that exact moment, missing out on the 40th anniversary. Even the new art is depressing to look at, since the majority of the characters featured haven't had a new game in years and likely never will. Seeing Perfect Dark protagonist Joanna Dark especially hurts since a Perfect Dark reboot was in the works at another studio, The Initiative, but that studio was completely shut down as part of the layoffs, with the reboot dying with it. With Everwild's cancellation, Rare doesn't have any new games on its schedule. So, unless it or Microsoft announce otherwise, the studio is currently committed to updating Sea Of Thieves and nothing else. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter.
