SEPANG: Passengers using the KLIA Aerotrain at Terminal 1 of the KL International Airport (KLIA) on Tuesday (July 1) described their experience as much better compared to the old train, particularly in terms of comfort, design and operational efficiency.
A passenger, Syazwan Misbah, 32, said the new train provides a more interesting experience with a more modern and better atmosphere in the carriage.
"I think this new one is more efficient because it runs non-stop every two minutes and we don't have to wait long.
"Taking the bus was quite difficult for passengers who had to walk a long way This new aerotrain is within the satellite building," he said.
The aerotrain service resumed full operations this morning after undergoing a RM456mil upgrading process, as part of the RM742mil KLIA transformation initiative, aimed at strengthening its position as a world-class regional aviation hub.
Nazihah Abdullah, 35, from Kuala Lumpur, who was on her way to India, said the new train service provides significant comfort with more spacious areas and clearer information displays.
"The train space is a bit more spacious and has a clear display. The old one didn't have a display like this," she said, adding that the waiting time to board the train was also not too long, and the entire journey took less than three minutes.
A Taiwanese traveller, Dr Inglish Huang said he considered himself lucky as he got the privilege to experience the first day of the relaunch of this Aerotrain.
Huang, who is International Korfball Federation (IKF) Asia president, also expressed his admiration for the country's warm hospitality and the newly launched aerotrain.
"We came from Taiwan to promote our sport, Korfball, a mixed team game played by boys and girls together. It's often called Dutch basketball and is recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
"Previously, we had to rely on the bus transit and wait longer, but now we are lucky to have this. The air-conditioning is good, and it's very fast and efficient. Honestly, the ride feels almost romantic," he added.
The Aerotrain, which has been an iconic feature of KLIA since its opening in 1998, is now equipped with the Alstom Innovia APM 300R train set. Each three-car train can accommodate up to 270 passengers and operates at a maximum speed of 56km/h, thereby reducing the travel time between the main terminal and satellite terminal to less than three minutes.
This new train is also equipped with an advanced condition monitoring system designed to reduce service disruptions, enhance operational efficiency and increase user comfort. - Bernama

All Blacks go Dutch with Holland call-up

DUNEDIN: A sold-out crowd in Dunedin will ensure noisy support for the All Blacks in their season-opening test against France on Saturday but there will also be cheers in the Netherlands when Fabian Holland takes the field. The Dutch-born lock will line up for his test debut alongside captain Scott Barrett in the second row, possibly the biggest surprise among the four uncapped players included in Scott Robertson's match-day squad. Standing 2.04m and weighing in at 124 kg (273.37 pounds), 22-year-old Holland is well-known to the Otago faithful in Dunedin, having become a cult hero at the Highlanders in Super Rugby. But his selection is the realisation of an improbable childhood dream and a rugby obsession that started in the seaside village of Castricum, outside Amsterdam. Holland was smitten by rugby at the age of five after watching the All Blacks on YouTube and soon had his dad downloading Super Rugby matches to watch every night. At the age of 16, he packed his bags and flew to New Zealand's South Island to board at Christchurch Boys High School, the rugby nursery of All Blacks greats Dan Carter and Brodie Retallick. A planned six-month stint to develop his game ended up stretching to two years before he headed south to Dunedin to have a crack at a professional career. Holland has not looked back, signing a three-year deal with the Highlanders in 2022 after a season with the provincial Otago side. Robertson beamed when asked about giving Holland his first cap, a move made possible by switching lock Tupou Vaa'i to the back row against France. "He's pretty excited. From Zeeland to New Zealand," Robertson told reporters today (July 3). "He's come a long way. It's a great story. Pretty single-minded from a 14-year-old to make that call to come over and represent another country in a game he loves — and he saw the All Blacks as the ultimate. "It's movie sort of stuff, isn't it?" Holland will have Otago company to help with the match-day nerves when he marches out under the roof at Forsyth-Barr stadium on Saturday. Former Otago and Highlanders teammate Christian Lio-Willie is among the uncapped players, along with Waikato Chiefs' prop Ollie Norris and Wellington Hurricanes' loose forward Du'Plessis Kirifi. Lio-Willie was brought in to the squad as injury cover but now finds himself set to start at number eight alongside enforcer Ardie Savea and Vaa'i in the back row. "When I saw my name on that screen, I just sort of numbed out — didn't even know who the second half of the team was," 26-year-old Lio-Willie said of his inclusion. He was thrilled to have Holland share a test debut. "It's awesome. (We) actually had our first starting debut together in Forsyth-Barr.

Omid's promotion adds pace to Selangor's frontline

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor have promoted Afghanistan striker Omid Musawi from their Under-23 squad as they look to strengthen their frontline for the new M-League season. The 24-year-old, known for his pace, joined the Red Giants' U-23 side in October last year and is now eager to make his mark with the senior team. "Since arriving last year, I felt right at home," said Omid in a statement. "Selangor are a professional, development-focused club, and I'm proud to now be part of the senior team. This is a great opportunity for me to grow, not just as a player but as a person." "My aim is to play as much as I can, give my all, and help the team succeed." Born in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, and raised in the Netherlands, Omid began his career in the youth ranks of AGOVV Apeldoorn before moving to FC Twente's academy in 2011. He went on to score 10 goals and provide three assists in 31 matches with Twente's youth squad and also featured for their reserve side. His development continued with stints in the youth setups of Vitesse and PEC Zwolle, later earning promotion to the senior squads of both Dutch clubs. Omid's professional breakthrough came in Australia with Para Hills Knights SC, where he made 26 appearances, including in the National Premier Leagues South Australia. He made his senior international debut for Afghanistan in a friendly against Vietnam on June 1, 2022, and has since earned nine caps. Selangor have also signed Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes and Thai international midfielder Picha Autra. The club are reportedly close to finalising a deal for former Kedah and Chonburi forward Willian Lira.

Eogene bounces back to reach Canada Open main draw

KUALA LUMPUR: Eogene Ewe showed strong resolve to bounce back from last week's early exit at the US Open by booking his place in the main draw of the Canada Open. The world No. 98 cleared both his qualifying hurdles at the Markham Pan Am Centre in Ontario on Tuesday to earn a shot at redemption in the Super 300 tournament. Eogene made a confident start, brushing aside India's world No. 137 Chirag Sen 21-14, 21-10. He then edged Taiwan's world No. 93 Ting Yen Chen 21-19, 22-20, improving his head-to-head record against the Taiwanese to 3-1. The back-to-back wins will be a welcome confidence boost for the 20-year-old, who crashed out in the opening qualifying round of the US Open last week to South Korea's Yoo Tae Bin — the same player he had beaten to win the Slovenia Open title in May. Eogene will now look for a further breakthrough when he takes on world No. 40 Takuma Obayashi in the first round on Wednesday. The Japanese shuttler was a finalist at the 2022 Canada Open. Three other Malaysians will also begin their campaigns on Wednesday. World No. 43 Justin Hoh, who fell short of expectations at the US Open last week, opens his men's singles challenge against Taiwan's world No. 71 Wang Po Wei. In the women's singles, K. Letshanaa, fresh off a new career-high ranking of No. 45, will meet American world No. 67 Ishika Jaiswal. World No. 87 Wong Ling Ching faces a tough first-round clash against Denmark's fifth seed and world No. 31 Line Christophersen.
