Omid's promotion adds pace to Selangor's frontline

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor have promoted Afghanistan striker Omid Musawi from their Under-23 squad as they look to strengthen their frontline for the new M-League season.
The 24-year-old, known for his pace, joined the Red Giants' U-23 side in October last year and is now eager to make his mark with the senior team.
"Since arriving last year, I felt right at home," said Omid in a statement.
"Selangor are a professional, development-focused club, and I'm proud to now be part of the senior team. This is a great opportunity for me to grow, not just as a player but as a person."
"My aim is to play as much as I can, give my all, and help the team succeed."
Born in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, and raised in the Netherlands, Omid began his career in the youth ranks of AGOVV Apeldoorn before moving to FC Twente's academy in 2011.
He went on to score 10 goals and provide three assists in 31 matches with Twente's youth squad and also featured for their reserve side.
His development continued with stints in the youth setups of Vitesse and PEC Zwolle, later earning promotion to the senior squads of both Dutch clubs.
Omid's professional breakthrough came in Australia with Para Hills Knights SC, where he made 26 appearances, including in the National Premier Leagues South Australia.
He made his senior international debut for Afghanistan in a friendly against Vietnam on June 1, 2022, and has since earned nine caps.
Selangor have also signed Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes and Thai international midfielder Picha Autra.
The club are reportedly close to finalising a deal for former Kedah and Chonburi forward Willian Lira.

PSG mental resilience key to reaching Club World Cup semi-finals

ATLANTA: Much has been made of European champions Paris Saint-Germain's attacking flair, their rapid and dangerous wingers and thrilling style, but what carried them through to the Club World Cup semi-finals on Saturday was a dose of resilience. Luis Enrique's side beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in Atlanta with just nine men at the end after late red cards for Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made several good saves to help the French treble winners progress to the final four, where they will meet a familiar face in Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe. Captain Marquinhos said his team's mentality was vital to keep adding silverware to their trophy cabinet. "It was a game that taught us lessons, a game that brought us out of our comfort zone," the Brazilian defender told reporters. "(It showed) the mentality of our group, it's something we talk about a lot – winning is very hard and to keep winning is even harder. "That's our mentality today, to show we are always hungry, that we always want to go further." Luis Enrique explained that his team's work over the past year has contributed to their growing resilience. "This goes back to the season that we played, we suffered together... we displayed a true team spirit," said the Spaniard. "We may win, we may lose, we may have a draw, but our attitude, our actions are there." PSG won the Champions League for the first time in their history in May after a tricky run to the final, including a last-16 triumph over Liverpool on penalties. Donnarumma was the hero as they dug deep at Anfield in March and ousted Arne Slot's side, who were among the favourites to win the trophy. "We even went to Liverpool looking for a result – you need a very good mentality. Today again, with two fewer men, we were all together on the pitch, defending as a team, helping each other out there," said Marquinhos. "When the (first) red card happened I looked at my team-mates and I saw they were pumped up to defend together. "We talked to each other, we said we'll defend, we won't concede goals, this game is ours and we'll defend hard to the end. "I knew nothing would happen – we said that our team is very strong in this moment... it doesn't matter what happens, mentally we're ready." In fact, with PSG down to nine men and leading through Desire Doue's goal, they held off Bayern and added a second through Ousmane Dembele. The Parisians also impressed against Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals, resisting Mikel Arteta's side in the first leg to claim a hard-fought 1-0 win at the Emirates Stadium. They fell two goals down in the Coupe de France semi-final against Dunkerque, before bouncing back to win 4-2 on the way to claiming the trophy. Luis Enrique said his squad had a "great ability" to manage difficult moments after that Cup win in April, and the coach again praised his team for their strength to hold on against Bayern. "It's a team that has resilience, our supporters, they have great resilience," said Luis Enrique. "We are a team that is ready to compete at all times, no matter the result." Marquinhos said the former Spain and Barcelona coach's work was a key reason for the club's mental strength improving. Previous PSG sides have been littered with star names but lacked the nous and grit to triumph on the biggest occasions. "The key is our coach, he has brought his philosophy, he's brought with him his mentality, he has prepared the team very well from the first day he arrived," said Marquinhos. "He was looking to improve the team mentally, to be ready for everything that can happen in a game... "We went through it all this season, bad moments in which we didn't get results, when we played well but didn't score." Bayern coach Vincent Kompany recalled the excessive criticism of Luis Enrique after the Germans edged PSG 1-0 in the Champions League first round in November. However, after they overcame that hardship among others to dominate Europe, hammering Inter Milan in the most one-sided final in the competition's history, few would bet against them going on to conquer the world.--AFP

JDT announced the signing with the Brazilian-born on Sunday (July 6) and he is set to wear the number 25 shirt when the league kicks off in August. Figueiredo's name is still fresh in the ears of Malaysian football fans after making his debut with the national team against Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup third round qualifiers last month. He made headlines after scoring the opening goal for Harimau Malaya and made an impact in their 4-0 win against Vietnam at Bukit Jalil. "Figueiredo brings with him commitment and determination to JDT," the club's statement said. The 29-year-old will be making JDT his home after spending two years with Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir, where he made 80 appearances and scored 18 goals. Figueiredo is now the third heritage player to join the Southern Tigers' locker room, joining forces with Dutch-born midfielder Hector Hevel and Spanish-born centreback Jon Irazabal. The three are part of the recent wave of Malaysian heritage players brought into the national set-up, which also includes Argentinian-born Rodrigo Holgado. Vincent stays patient to remain on top of leaderboard in Rabat

Scott Vincent was rewarded for showing the patience befitting a saint, making a late birdie on the 17th hole that edged him ahead by one shot at the end of the third round in the US$2 million (RM8.4m) International Series Morocco. At the par-73 Royal Golf Dar Es Salam course on Saturday, the Zimbabwean started the penultimate round leading by two shots, and despite a solid day of ball striking, his putter refused to cooperate. Vincent made only two birdies in a bogey-free round of two-under par 71 and stayed ahead of the fast-charging Thai Settee Prakongvech (67), who closed with a disappointing bogey. China's Bobby Bai matched Settee's 67 and took possession of third place on the leaderboard at nine-under par total. The Aussie duo of Jack Buchanan (68) and Maverick Antcliff (72), American Austen Truslow (69) and Thai Suteepat Prateeptienchai (71) were in a tie for fourth place at eight-under. Two-time International Series champion, American Peter Uihlein (72) made a bogey on the last hole to slip and join China's Yanwei Liu (71) in tied eighth place. Vincent's was one of only two bogey-free rounds of the day, a clear indicator that the course was playing difficult, but the 33-year-old Denver, Colorado resident was rarely in trouble. He made a birdie on the par-five fifth hole and had several looks at birdies but failed to make any apart from the chip to two feet on the drivable par-four 17th hole. On the par-four 16th, his birdie putt from 10 feet made a hard 360-degree horseshoe, and on the par-five 18th, he left it short by inches, again from 10 feet. 'It was great, a little challenging for me out there. I didn't feel like I drove it particularly well, which just made it a little harder. But all in all, it was nice, solid and steady, and always nice to play bogey-free,' said the man whose last international win was almost three years and one month ago in the 2022 International Series England.
