Darvish Sharp for 7 Innings, Sheets Homers and the Padres Beat the Mets 5-0 for 3-Game Sweep
Manny Machado added a two-run, bases-loaded single for the Padres, who won their fifth straight game as they continue to chase the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
Slugger Juan Soto was out of the lineup for the Mets a day after fouling a ball off the top of his left foot.
Darvish (1-3), who turns 39 on Aug. 16, held the Mets to two hits, struck out seven and walked none in his fifth start. After allowing Mark Vientos' single with one out in the first, Darvish retired the next 13 batters. He had been sidelined by right elbow inflammation from mid-March until making his season debut on July 7.
Darvish got a nice ovation as he headed to the dugout after pitching a perfect seventh in what became the Padres' big league-high 15th shutout.
It was Darvish's 111th big league win, which, combined with his 93 in Japan, allowed him to break out of a tie with Hiroki Kuroda and take sole possession of first place on the combined all-time list.
Sheets' homer off Clay Holmes (9-6) came after Jose Iglesias reached on shortstop Francisco Lindor's throwing error with two outs in the third. Sheets then drove an 0-2 pitch an estimated 427 feet to right-center, his 15th.
Holmes retired the first two batters in the second before allowing a single by Martin Maldonado, hitting Fernando Tatis Jr. on the top of the left hand with a pitch and walking Luis Arraez. Machado then singled to left for a 2-0 lead.
Machado hit a three-run homer in a 7-1 win on Tuesday night.
Holmes lasted only 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs — two earned — and eight hits. The Mets were swept in a series of three or more games at San Diego for the first time since 2008.

Americans set a relay world record in swim worlds in Singapore and Ledecky wins again
SINGAPORE (AP) -- The Americans set a world relay record and piled up three gold medals Saturday in what's been an otherwise frustrating swimming world championships for them. And at the heart of the turnaround on the next-to-last day of the worlds in Singapore was none other than 28-year-old Katie Ledecky, the most decorated female swimmer in history. Despite the world record in the mixed freestyle 4x100 relay -- 3 minutes, 18.48 seconds -- the story was Ledecky remaining unbeaten in the 800 freestyle. She first won that race in the 2012 Olympics and has never lost since in a major competition. Perhaps for the first time in her career, Ledecky was given only a 50-50 shot by many to beat the 18-year-old Canadian Summer McIntosh, the star of these worlds with Frenchman Leon Marchand. McIntosh's best time this season was 8:05.07 -- just behind Ledecky's world mark of 8:04.12 set earlier this year. After 700 meters, McIntosh of Canada was ahead by 0.14 seconds, but she faded and Ledecky won in 8:05.62 with Lani Pallister of Australia taking silver (8:05.98). McIntosh (8:07.29) settled for bronze. McIntosh has won three individual gold medals in Singapore and was trying for five. She will come up short, though she will be the favorite in Sunday's 400 individual medley. Ledecky said she was unaware she was trailing and, when asked about it, glanced down at a race-results sheet to confirm it. "I didn't know," she said. "I just knew it was close the whole way. There were times where I thought I was just going to break away. I was just happy I was up there. MONTREAL (AP) -- Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upset top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday night to reach the National Bank Open quarterfinals. Gauff dropped to 2-3 since winning the French Open. She followed the major victory with opening losses in Berlin and Wimbledon, then overcame double-fault problems to win two three-set matches in Montreal. Gauff had five double-faults Saturday after having 23 in her opener against Danielle Collins and 14 against Veronika Kudermetova. The 18-year-old Mboko, ranked 85th in the world, finished off the 21-year-old Gauff -- who had 24 unforced errors -- in 1 hour, 22 minutes.
