Singapore has unveiled a new national initiative, Career Health SG , to help workers and employers better navigate the changing world of work through timely upskilling , skills assessments, and structured career planning. Launched on 10 July by Manpower Minister Dr Tan See Leng during the inaugural Career Health Summit 2025, the initiative aims to embed the concept of 'career health' into everyday workforce planning.A dedicated website, www.careerhealth.sg , will serve as a central hub for both employees and employers to access career coaching support, assess skills gaps, and explore relevant upskilling and workforce transformation schemes. The summit drew over 500 HR leaders and business executives and was jointly organised by Workforce Singapore (WSG) and the Singapore Business Federation.Dr Tan urged companies to adopt a skills-first approach in hiring and workforce development, shifting focus away from formal qualifications. A Ministry of Manpower (MOM) study found that employers who embrace such practices see faster hiring, more diverse talent pipelines, and stronger performance outcomes.Later this year, MOM will roll out additional tools to help employers evaluate workforce readiness, identify training needs, and implement job redesign strategies . Employees, meanwhile, can engage with WSG's Polaris career coaching programme to map personalised growth paths.WSG CEO Dilys Boey emphasised the broader ambition: a cultural shift where employers rethink job roles and workers take charge of their career trajectory. Harvard professor Joseph Fuller, a keynote speaker, lauded Career Health SG as 'the most sophisticated national intervention' globally, highlighting its dual focus on proactive support for both employers and mid-career workers amid the disruption caused by AI.

Speaking on Kamath's WTF podcast, the Silicon Valley veteran shared his views on the future of AI, and why the next generation of students might want to rethink everything they thought they knew about did not sugarcoat the disruption that lies ahead. He predicted that in the next five years, AI could take over as many as 80 per cent of existing jobs. While that sounds alarming, he insisted that technology will also create opportunities in ways that are hard to imagine today. This is not the only time he has spoken about month ago, in another podcast, Khosla stated the same stats about the future. 'Within the next five years, any economically valuable job humans can do, AI will be able to do 80 per cent of it80 per cent of all jobs can be done by an AI,' as quoted in the report. He even pointed out that by 2040, 'the need to work will go away. People will work on things because they want to, not because they need to pay their mortgage,' as quoted by Fortune. Khosla's comments come at a time when tech giants are announcing job cuts day after day. Coming back to the recent interview with Zerodha CEO, Khosla stated, 'This is going to be one of the biggest transitions humanity has ever seen.' He said, 'Most of the jobs you see today will be automated, but there will be so many new things to do.'But this time, it was not just a warning. There is some advice as well. His top advice to young founders?For those dreaming of launching a start-up in the middle of this disruption, Khosla was refreshingly blunt. 'Pick a problem worth solving,' he said. Don't waste years chasing safe, incremental ideas. 'Most people try to do something that looks like a business,' he said. 'I say go after something that looks like a dream.'He explained that in an era where AI will make execution easier, the real value will lie in thinking an AI world, Khosla believes the pendulum swings firmly in favour of generalists. When Kamath asked him whether students should specialise or broaden out, he said, 'Be a generalist. Rohit Singh, a 36-year-old mid-level IT professional in Pune, booked a 2-BHK flat in 2021 for ₹78 lakh, expecting possession by August 2023. To fund the purchase, he took a home loan of ₹65 lakh, with an EMI of ₹52,000 per month. However, due to regulatory delays and cash flow issues faced by the developer, the project stalled, and handover was pushed indefinitely. With no tax benefits from possession and no rental income, the ₹79,000 monthly outgo severely strained his finances. His savings quickly depleted, and he began defaulting on utility bills and pausing SIPs and insurance premiums. Within five months, he delayed two EMI payments, which impacted his credit score and triggered penalty interest from the bank. 'Borrowers facing delayed flat possession are caught between a rock and a hard place as they need to pay EMI as well as in many cases rent for the existing accommodation,' says Abhishek Kumar, a Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi)-registered investment advisor (RIA), and founder and chief investment advisor of SahajMoney, a financial planning firm. Impact on borrowers Even if there is a delay in possession, it is recommended that borrowers keep on making the EMI payments on time. Starting from affecting your credit score, not paying your EMIs will land you in all sorts of trouble. Banks will simply check which customer's EMI has bounced. They are not obligated nor do they have the systems in place to check why it bounced. 'So, yes, if you miss an EMI because your house hasn't been delivered yet and you're stuck paying both rent and loan, your CIBIL score will still take a hit,' says Siddarth Jain, CFO at MinEmi, a web application that utilizes AI to help users optimize their loan and credit card choices. Lenders generally assess defaults on a case-by-case basis, and any relaxation or restructuring is at their discretion. 'Credit bureaus rely solely on the data provided by lenders; they do not investigate the reasons behind defaults. As a result, even if the default is due to a delay in possession, it is recorded as a missed payment unless the lender intervenes,' says Raoul Kapoor, Co-CEO, Andromeda Sales and Distribution, a loan distribution company. Any default, regardless of the reason, is recorded in the borrower's credit history and can lead to a significant drop in the credit score. This, in turn, reduces the borrower's chances of getting future loans or may result in higher interest rates. 'Rebuilding a damaged credit score is a slow process and may take years of consistent repayment and financial discipline to recover,' says Kapoor. What can you do to minimise the impact If you're stuck with delayed possession, ask your bank if they offer a pre-EMI option. Under this structure, you only pay the interest portion of your loan until you actually get possession. 'This significantly lowers your monthly outgo for a while. It's similar to how an education loan works, interest accumulates while you study, and full repayment begins once you graduate. For homebuyers, this can ease the pressure during the construction phase,' says Adhil Shetty, CEO, a fintech portal. Lenders are often open to negotiations. If you explain your situation, say, construction is delayed and you're struggling to manage rent and EMI, they might offer a moratorium. 'For example, they could allow you to defer payments for six months, with the accumulated interest added later. It's not free money, but it gives you breathing space. Many borrowers are unaware that such arrangements are possible if they simply ask,' says Shetty.
