Don't Be Careful, Be Competent—Coaching Wisdom From Hollywood
Hollywood might not be famous for its wisdom, but sometimes we find the best piece of advice when we avoid dismissing something because of its packaging or where it came from.
I recently saw an interview with Tom Cruise where he explained his life philosophy and how he dealt with fear, uncertainty and impostor syndrome. Perhaps that interview caught my attention as I had just had a similar conversation with an outstanding coach, Cornelis van der Sluijs, who shared one of the three main lessons he has learned from coaching hundreds of leaders (including heads of some of the biggest companies in the world): "Some of life's best moments are unplanned."
Remaining Open To Possibility
It might seem unlikely, but it turns out Tom Cruise and Cornelis have a philosophy in common: Planning every single detail of our life can prevent us from enjoying that life, and it might also keep us from noticing an opportunity when it arises if it's not on our agenda—even if it's exactly what we need. And if we do notice it, we might stop ourselves from pursuing it because we feel unprepared or anxious or because we lose confidence and convince ourselves that if it were truly what we wanted, it would have been part of our plan.
Coaching is about remaining open to perspectives and possibilities while becoming better every single day. That idea seems simple, until we must put it into action. That is why the right coach can change lives. Trying to solve a problem at the same level where it was created, by thinking harder, is like trying to decrease pollution by increasing traffic. It does not make a lot of sense.
The feeling of being incompetent creates stress, while feeling scared and stressed can also make us feel we are lacking the skills to cope with the situation. And our brain struggles to differentiate between situations that are life-threatening and those that merely threaten our ego. The ability to separate these two concepts is the key to intentionally becoming more competent and flexible.
How To Keep External Pressure From Becoming Internal Stress
Executive coach Naushad Ramoly offers a simple and efficient technique. When an event happens, we assess whether it is relevant and whether it is positive or negative to us (primary appraisal). If it is relevant, we come up with coping options and possible outcomes (secondary appraisal), which leads to an emotional response followed by a behavioral one. This powerful method can immediately help us unlock internal, creative resources that would be otherwise blocked by our brain being in survival mode.
Here are three more tried and tested coaching techniques and questions you can implement anytime you feel that external pressure is transforming into internal stress:
Yes, it's a weird question, but it's meant as a powerful reminder that we have a choice when things get hard. We can get softer, like a potato in boiling water, or we can get tougher, like the egg. Under pressure, people tend to react instinctively like one or the other depending on their preferences and habits, but that is exactly when we need an anchor so we can choose to be coffee ... which gets magical in hot water.
Growth requires the right amount of friction, so realizing that the feeling of discomfort is a signal that we are expanding our boundaries can help us power through difficult situations with a relatively genuine smile on our face.
As discussed in the opening paragraphs, not everything is under our control. In fact, the only thing we can definitely control in a difficult situation is the meaning we assign to it—the narrative we create in our head that will create the emotional and behavioral response. We are in charge of that; nobody else.
This is exactly the moment when we have to interrupt our autopilot mode to apply some more accurate, neutral thinking. Change the narrative, change the response; and the outcome will be better, too.
This is by far my most effective technique. What it means is that next time you want to (or don't want to) do something, reflect on how you are going to feel about it the next day. Are you going to feel proud that you tried something challenging or regret that you ran away from something?
The Keys To Real Change
In a previous article, I looked into the often misunderstood world of psychometric assessments, as some people immediately dismiss them, while others take them way too seriously or use them in a way they were not intended for. Having said that, using them the right way, alone or with a coach, can make the process of getting to know ourselves much quicker and more accurate.
Let's be honest: It is much easier to get out of a maze with a map than without one, guessing and hoping for the best. As the world is rapidly changing around us and creating more uncertainty, it is even more important to draw our sense of certainty from something that cannot be taken away from us: an identity that is built on solid self-awareness. The more we know exactly who we are, what we stand for and how we can optimize our internal world, the more competent and flexible we become to seize the right opportunities.

Jennifer Aniston Jokes That Season 4 of ‘The Morning Show' Is ‘Not Friends'
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Spoilers below. What's next for The Morning Show? For a series that literally began its latest season IN SPACE, the possibilities are endless. Season 3 went from the outer layers of earth's atmosphere to the bowels of the Capitol on January 6th—all while navigating the network's pending sale to an Elon Musk-like billionaire, Paul Marks (Jon Hamm). The series, which began as a reflection of the #MeToo movement, continued to rip from headlines, this latest season being the overrun of Roe vs. Wade, and the current state of media. In the end, Alex is making power moves, Bradley is about to do time, and UBA is heading into a drastically different direction than we thought. So, where to now? On May 28, it was announced that season 4 will premiere on September 17 on Apple TV+. From there, the 10-episode season will release weekly every Friday until November 19. We're expecting to see much more of stars Jennifer Aniston (Alex) and Reese Witherspoon (Bradley), as well as Billy Crudup (Cory), Mark Duplass (Chip), Nestor Carbonell (Yanko), Karen Pittman (Mia), Greta Lee (Stella), and Nicole Beharie (Chris). Oscar winner Marion Cotillard will also join the cast as Celine Dumont, 'a savvy operator from a storied European family,' according to Apple. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeremy Irons, Aaron Pierre, William Jackson Harper, and Boyd Holbrook will appear in season 4 as well. Hamm will also be returning. But one character we won't be seeing again? Laura Peterson, Bradley's love interest. Per Variety, actress Julianna Margulies will not return for season 4, a decision reportedly made prior to Margulies's controversial comments on a podcast in November 2023. Season 4 is confirmed to have a time jump. The show is now set to take place in spring 2024 after the merger has been finalized. The showrunner already hinted that this might happen in a previous conversation with THR. 'I think you probably have to have some kind of time jump, because it takes so long to write and shoot and post the show,' she said. 'You don't want to get too far behind in real time, in terms of the era we're playing and when people are watching it. But I think those time jumps, actually, are great. Because they allow for really surprising reveals at the top of the season. It's a little bit of: 'How did they get there? Wait, he's doing what? Those two are together?!' I think just on a transparent deliciousness of story, you can have a lot of fun with this big cast.' Now, the storied media conglomerates UBA and NBN will join forces in a massive deal that somehow turned out to be more beneficial than selling to billionaire Paul Marks. (He who surveilled journalists and lied to NASA.) But as Mia and Stella hint in the control room, this new chapter is going to lead to a lot of changes in both companies: in leadership, talent, and staff. With two major companies coming together, projects and roles will double up. Will we see intense competition arise between anchors and producers between companies? Whose jobs are at stake? 'I think mergers are always messy, whether they're personal or corporate,' showrunner Charlotte Stoudt told Deadline. 'So, it's always fun to play with that. Whether that story is the story is a question we're wrestling with right now. There are all sorts of things to talk about. We're also trying to reflect the world…how many streamers can there be? People getting laid off, that sort of stuff. So we also just want to reflect what's actually happening in the media world. Some people are doing very well, some people are doing less well. It's like the Wild West.' And at the end of season 3, Bradley—now resigned from UBA—and her brother, Hal, turn themselves in to the FBI to account for his assault of a police officer during the January 6th insurrection (and Bradley subsequently withholding evidence). That leaves a big question for the state of the series's leading pair: How will the show handle Alex and Bradley being apart? (Even more than they did this past season?) Stoudt also teased what's to come in a discussion with Deadline in April 2024. 'We blew everything up last year with the biggest bomb we could possibly build,' she explained. 'So, we have to ask ourselves how is the band going to get back together, and what will that look like? We get into the world of DeepFakes and AI and the misinformation in the fog of war that we're seeing now in the Middle East and stuff. We're looking at who can trust. And can you trust what you're seeing? Can you trust yourself? Can you trust your news outlet?' In an interview in July 2025 with People, Aniston hinted at a 'complicated' season. 'The Morning Show is just a beast to film. It is layered, it's complicated, it's emotional, it hits on a lot of topics and current events, so let's just say, it's not Friends,' she joked. Of herself and Witherspoon producing, Aniston said, 'We're involved in every single aspect of the show, on top of just the performance side, which is a big piece of it. But I've got incredible support, and we have such an incredible team.' Yes. On July 8, Aniston shared with her Instagram followers that the cast has officially begun shooting. 'Let @themorningshow season 4 games begin 🥳 Here we come! ❤️👏🏼👏🏼❤️🥂,' she wrote in the caption along with a BTS photo of her, Witherspoon, and Notaro. They wore coordinating denim looks and carried name plates with their characters' names. Aniston also included a picture of the front of the script for episode 401, titled 'My Roman Empire.' Poker Face With the season finale of Poker Face coming next week to Peacock, Patti Harrison has enjoyed making some quality television. More from Deadline 'Poker Face's Patti Harrison Learns Clea DuVall Suggested Her For Big Season 2 Role After Being 'Mortified' By Pilot Audition 'Poker Face' Season 2 Guest Stars: From Justin Theroux To Jason Ritter 'Love Island USA' Sets Fan Voting Record After Season 7 Villa's Simmering Tensions Finally Boil Over The comedian, who plays Alex in Season 2 of Rian Johnson's mystery-of-the-week series, spoke to Deadline about being part of the rare 'howcatchem' procedural that stands out among a television landscape that mostly 'just feels like cash grabs.' 'I think the show is a love letter in a lot of ways to all sorts of TV shows and movies, and everyone involved, they're all film, TV junkies, and it just really felt invigorating to be like, 'Oh we're telling a story that is moving—'' she explained. 'Everything feels so alive, I guess.' Harrison continued, 'I feel like I've watched some stuff recently that just feels like cash grabs, or it doesn't really matter if the characters have chemistry, it doesn't matter if the story is exciting or whatnot. They're just like, 'Let's put this movie out cause we know people will go see it.' Or 'Let's put this TV show out because it's a franchise, or people will just watch it no matter what.' And it does feel cool to get to work on something where everyone was so excited to talk about the references, and the planning for the shots, and why the camera moves make sense for the story and the characters' emotional world and stuff like that.' Noting in the interview that it was 'my dream to work with Rian Johnson,' Harrison joined Poker Face in the back half of the sophomore season as the quirky new friend of Natasha Lyonne's Charlie Cale, who quickly develops a bond with the human lie detector as Charlie considers putting down roots after months of being on the run from the mafia. In the penultimate 'Day of the Iguana', directed by Ti West, an assassin (Justin Theroux) frames Alex for murdering the groom (Haley Joel Osment) at a wedding she and Charlie are catering. The Lyonne-helmed finale 'The End of the Road', available to stream July 10 on Peacock, sees the duo on the run from the FBI and the mob as they get to the shocking truth behind who placed the hit and framed Alex. Javing been to MetLife Stadium multiple times to cover the Copa America last summer, I can understand why the venue has been chosen for back-to-back FIFA tournament finals. It's gigantic. It's the type of stadium that makes one feel tiny in comparison with the colossal concrete structure. Argentina's Copa América semifinal against Canada was a prime example of what MetLife Stadium can sound like for a big international football match. The Argentines took over the ground, chanting and singing throughout the game.
