AFSCME protests at Champaign Co. Courthouse, warns of possible strike if new contract isn't complete soon

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees gathered to picket outside of the Champaign County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon.
They said the major 'sticking points' in negotiations has been about pay and insurance. The union's previous agreement with the county expired at the end of last year, and a vote last month saw 96% of votes were in favor of a strike if necessary.

'When the workers don't show up for the courthouse, how's court going to happen? You know, if animal control isn't there, how are the animals going to be taken care of? How are the citizens of Champaign County going to be taken care of,' said Cecelia Phillips, local AFSCME president. 'It's not something we want to do because we all love our jobs; we love what we do. But it's also important that at the end of the day, we go home and can put food on our tables.'
There are two more planned mediated negotiation sessions. Phillips said if a new contract isn't done by then, a strike could happen.

Swiss president heads to US for talks to defuse tariff threat

By John Revill ZURICH (Reuters) -Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter and Business Minister Guy Parmelin will fly to Washington on Tuesday, the government said, to try to avoid the 39% tariffs announced by President Donald Trump on exports to the United States. The pair will "facilitate meetings with the US authorities at short notice and hold talks with a view to improving the tariff situation for Switzerland," the government said. It not specify which parts of the U.S. government they would meet in Washington or whether a meeting was scheduled with Trump. The Swiss government said on Monday it was ready to make a "more attractive offer" to United States as it sought to avoid a 39% tariff, due to take effect on August 7, which would damage Switzerland's economy. The Federal Council, the governing cabinet, held an emergency meeting and said it was ready to pursue negotiations beyond the August 7 deadline. The government gave no details of what extra incentives could be offered to secure a better deal, but it did say it was not considering any countermeasures against the U.S. The aim of Keller-Sutter and Parmelin's trip was to present "a more attractive offer to the United States in a bid to lower the level of reciprocal tariffs for Swiss exports, taking U.S. concerns into account," the government said. Cory Booker Is Misdiagnosing Democrats' Problem

Senator Cory Booker wants Democrats on Capitol Hill to fight harder against President Donald Trump. And accomplish what, exactly? During a fiery tirade on the Senate floor, the New Jersey Democrat last week accused his own party of being 'complicit' in Trump's ongoing series of constitutionally questionable power grabs — including withholding congressionally mandated funding; gutting federal agencies created via congressional statute; and using the government to intimidate private industry and universities.
