TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2024: Know the Coach: Benni McCarthy (Kenya)

CAF25-06-2025
Kenya will make its debut at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, when the tournament kicks off in August, and the Harambee Stars will look to the legendary South African footballer Benni McCarthy, to lead what they aim to be a historic run in their maiden appearance.
The former Bafana Bafana star was officially unveiled as the Harambee Stars head coach in March, and has already been in charge in two competitive matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, as well as back to back friendly matches against Chad.
These four matches have shown McCarthy's attractive brand of attacking football and a massive positive swing in Kenya's playing style.
Most recently an attack coach with English Premier League giants Manchester United, the UEFA Champions League winner is on his maiden job with a national team. He will be out to show that the experience he picked in one of the most competitive leagues in the world will count.
He has been focused on following local league matches, to build a strong and formidable team that will compete for honours on home soil.
Name: Benni McCarthy
Nationality: South African
Age: 47 years
Current Team: Kenya
Tenure: 2025 Career Highlights
McCarthy is taking on his first national team job, having only worked at club level in his young coaching career. Before joining Manchester United, where he worked under Eric ten Hag, McCarthy worked with South African clubs Cape Town City and AmaZulu FC. He had also had stints with Hibernian FC (Scotland) and Belgian side Saint Truiden, both working as an assistant.
While with Cape Town in 2018, he led them to the MTN 8 title.
He earned more success when he moved to AmaZulu in the 2020-21 season, leading them to their highest ever placing in the South African top flight, a second place finish. They went on to qualify for the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League where they made more history, qualifying to the group stages in their maiden attempt. Coaching Style
McCarthy, being a former striker himself, favours an attacking style of play, often employing formations like 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 to maximize offensive potential. This approach is expected to challenge opponents at CHAN 2024 while reflecting his commitment to creating an exciting brand of football. CHAN Experience
As Kenya is participating in the CHAN tournament for the first time, this will also mark McCarthy's debut in the competition. His role will be pivotal as the Harambee Stars aim to establish themselves among the continent's elite. Impact on the Team
Despite only picking one win in four matches in charge, McCarthy has already shown a rebirth in how the team plays, and his insistence on giving players a chance based on merit. He has also shown great affection for his players, bridging what was an otherwise big gap between the playing unit and the technical bench.
McCarthy has repeatedly said that he will build a team that will not just participate at the CHAN 2024, but compete as well. Fun Fact
McCarthy has been vocal on giving young and local players a chance, saying as long as they have shown what they can do, they should be offered a chance. He has been to several Premier League matches and the last two international friendly matches against Chad have seen several local players handed debuts. Conclusion
With Benni McCarthy at the helm, Kenya heads into CHAN 2024 with optimism and a determination to make their mark. His vision for the Harambee Stars is rooted in fostering local talent and ensuring that the team competes with pride on the continental stage.

Noxolo Cesane: Celebrating 50 with more to come

Born in Gugulethu, Cape Town – a township in the Western Cape, Noxolo Cesane's journey to the global stage has been nothing short of resilience, trailblazing and consistency even when things have not been rosy. Her graceful approach on and off the pitch is noteworthy. That is why on Monday, July 7 when she marched onto the Honneur Stadium pitch in Oujda, northern Morocco at the ongoing TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 to make her 50th appearance in South African colours, a feeling of content engulfed her. The 24-year old Cesane knows that she is lucky to play the game that she loves so much. She explained to CAFOnline exclusively after the game, 'Honestly, I am happy to have reached 50 caps in our South African national colours. It is an honour to be playing at the WAFCON. It has been an incredible journey to get to this point.' The journey to 50 Like many a girl across the world, she kickstarted her journey by playing with boys in her neighbourhood before joining the Cape Town Roses with her twin sister Sinoxolo Cesane. Together, they rose through the ranks at junior level featuring for South Africa at the U17 and U20 levels. It is that excellence that led her to being chosen to the senior national team making her debut at the tender age of 19 on August 5, 2019 at the COSAFA Women's Championship in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape in front of the home fans. She remembers it like it was yesterday. South Africa head coach Dr Desiree Ellis who handed her, her first cap back reminisces, 'She was a revelation at that COSAFA Cup then came to the WAFCON in 2022 and made that fantastic pass to Jermaine [Seoposenwe] to score against Nigeria. She had a very good tournament then she went to the World Cup. She has really paid her dues. She then went overseas. Well deserved for a player who has really put in the work.' Cesane is who she thinks she is. Her movement on and off the ball speaks to her quality. Ball control, confidence and overall a standout understanding of the game that helps her decision making on the pitch is what sets her apart from the crowd. The impact and purpose at hand 'So many people look up to us because of where we come from. In Gugulethu, things look so crusty, so confusing and for me, I am grateful that I am able to represent them at the highest levels. It is important that they know that one has to work really hard to get what you want. Honestly, success does not really fall from the sky. You need to wake up early,' Cesane reflects on why playing football is important to her and her people back home. 'My sister and I together with other boys, we used to wake up early in the morning to go for practice. We were all so motivated to play the game and I am so proud of our journey. I am happy for them. Gugulethu is like a community, like a school. You learn a lot from the people there. They are all parents to us. If you are able to take all the lessons from them then we can succeed. That is the weapon to achieve our goals.' WAFCON 2024 With the WAFCON 2022 title in the bag, Cesane is striving to make sure that South Africa defend their title and that journey began against Ghana. At stake were the three points to garner their confidence as a team going forward and indeed she together with her teammates did the work to ensure a 2-0 victory. 'This was a very important game for us to be able to move forward so it was really hard at the beginning but we made it through,' she adds. This is her third WAFCON having played her first in 2018 in Ghana when they went to the final and lost to arch-rivals Nigeria 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw following extra time. Her teammate Ramalepe who amassed 111 caps against Ghana said about her teammate Cesane, 'She is a good player. Since she came to Banyana Banyana, she has improved a lot. Now, she is able to understand the game so well and also I love her. She is a player that I look up to even though I am a senior to her and she is a junior in the team. There is a lot to learn from her. I think that she should continue doing the work and working for the country.' What next? When Cesane received a specialized souvenir 50th cap jersey from Ellis after the game, she had an ear-to-ear smile. 'My twin sister has been calling me and she is very happy. I am also happy for her.' Sinoxolo Cesane is currently featuring for Mazatlan Femenil in Mexican topflight league. Former South African international Simphiwe Dludlu cum coach and broadcaster who was the analyst commentator for the world feed for this game told CAFOnline that, 'I have seen Noxolo and her twin sister [Sinoxolo] as 13 year olds dominating local women's football tournaments from Cape Town Roses (their first club) and they have have never stopped to accommodate anyone.' 'Noxolo has traveled the whole continent as an U17, U20 key player in the national team and grown her game into the senior team. Seeing her flourish with such class is a reward to me having worked with her from youth national teams. She has played in Europe, South America and now back in South Africa to continue the magic. I wish her even more longevity in the game. May she only change to elevate higher and higher into World Football. Well done superstar on your milestone for the Big 50 Caps.' South Africa will take on Tanzania in their next Group C matchup on Friday, July 11 at 8pm local time at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco.

Woman of the Match: Bambanani Mbane thrives in opener

Published: Monday, 07 July 2025 The mark of a champion is always seen in the way players and teams in general approach tough games. For South African international Bambanani Mbane, taking on Ghana in the TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 Group C opener on Monday, was an opportunity to help her team amass maximum points. This is the third consecutive time that South Africa are registering victory in their first game of the continental showpiece that it has become a normal thing now to them. It is that swagger of a team that has mastered the art of winning. From afar, it looks easy but to a player like Mbane, this is a result of hard work, discipline in the little and big things but also attention to detail. Deserved and hungry for more It is no wonder that she was named the Woman of the Match following their 2-0 win over the Black Queens of Ghana – a well deserved award that will not only look good in her trophy cabinet but will remind her of July 7, 2025 as a reward for her excellence. 'I am so glad that we managed to get the three points. It was never going to be an easy game but I am happy with the three points. Going forward, this is going to boost our confidence. We are the defending champions and we knew that it was not going to be easy but I am happy the way we started. Getting these three points was very important to us,' Mbane said after the game with a glow on her face. Teamwork makes the dream work There is always a sisterhood that comes to life whenever the Banyana Banyana take to the field. It is always experienced when they come off the bus. They take to singing in sync – songs that celebrate who they are and what they want to achieve. These songs guide them to the dressing room and it is there that they enter game mode – more like the feeling one embraces when going to war – except this war is on the field of play. For Mbane who features for two-time African champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, her camaraderie with her clubmates in regular season can be seen at the WAFCON in every touch of the ball and in more ways than one, it helps the success of the Banyana Banyana. A typical work day came to life in the second half when a ball was whipped into the box and to save the situation, Mbane headed it softly towards goalkeeper Andile Dlamini. The Goalkeeper of the WAFCON 2022 who was having a field day saving her team from all manner of attack thanks to a spirited Ghana side, picked up the headed pass and went on with her business like it was something they had talked about. 'Those two know each other from club level. Their communication skills are on another level. It is almost like they can premeditate what the other is going to do. I am never worried about them. I saw that moment and it speaks to their maturity and understanding of each other,' Desiree Ellis, the South Africa head coach said after the game. Mbane, Dlamini, Lebohang Ramalepe, Fikile Magama, Karabo Dhlamini, Noxolo Cesane and Tiisetso Makhubela complete the six-woman Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies squad inside the starting Banyana Banyana lineup against Ghana. Ellis also had high praise for Dlamini's standout performance against Ghana and emphasized that keeping a clean sheet was important to Banyana Banyana on the day.

South Africa begin WAFCON title defence with confident win over Ghana

Published: Monday, 07 July 2025 Reigning champions South Africa got their 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations campaign off to a perfect start with a convincing 2-0 victory over Ghana in their Group C opener in Oujda on Monday. Goals from Linda Motlhalo and Jermaine Seoposenwe inside the opening 35 minutes gave Banyana Banyana the result they needed to assert their status as title contenders in the expanded 12-team competition. Desiree Ellis' side looked composed from the outset and took the lead on 28 minutes after a VAR review confirmed a penalty for a foul on Noxolo Cesane. Motlhalo stepped up and slotted home coolly to the bottom right corner, giving South Africa the advantage their early pressure deserved. Moments later, they struck again. Full-back Lebohang Ramalepe surged forward and threaded a clever pass into the path of Seoposenwe, who calmly finished low into the far corner to double the lead. Ghana, making their return to WAFCON after missing the last edition, struggled to match the pace and organisation of their more experienced opponents. While they grew into the contest in the second half, they were wasteful in front of goal, with both Evelyn Badu and Alice Kusi hitting the crossbar. Despite several promising spells of pressure after the break, the Black Queens were repeatedly denied by South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini, who made key saves to preserve the clean sheet. South Africa managed the game well in the closing stages, introducing fresh legs through Hildah Magaia and Ronnel Donnelly to control possession and absorb Ghana's late push. The result extends Banyana Banyana's impressive record in opening WAFCON matches, having now won their last three tournament openers, including previous wins over Nigeria in 2018 and 2022. Ghana, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly if they are to progress from a tricky Group C that also includes Mali and Tanzania.
