I spent 24 hours with the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds gen 2 — here's what I like and don't

Tom's Guide07-07-2025
I love the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds. They're by far the best noise canceling earbuds you can buy, with by far the best ANC. They're comfortable and packed with features — I never leave them home when I go on any kind of trip. I don't think I could live without the peace and quiet I enjoy with my QC Ultra Earbuds.
So you can imagine just how excited I was when Bose announced it was launching a new version of the buds, with improvements across the board to make them even better. Well, I've now got them in my hands (ears), and I'm here to tell you all my discoveries in the 24-hour period that I've been testing.
One of the only things really lacking from the charging case before was wireless charging. Unlike the Sony WF-1000XM5 and the Apple AirPods Pro 2, you couldn't drop the first gen onto a wireless charging pad to juice them up. That was (emphasis on was) a shame.
It was a shame because that's no longer an issue — the generation 2 version can now be charged up with a wireless charger. It's good! It's great! And crucially, it works. Place it on a pad, and it'll charge up. Nice. It does lead me to something I wish was better though...
It's no secret that the battery life of the QuietComfort line of products isn't the best. It's likely because the always-on ANC and transparency modes suckle at the battery like a thirsty newborn, and it's left Bose headphones and earbuds with less battery than the competition.
Just like the first generation, the earbuds will only last 6 hours. That's only just enough and pales in comparison to the 8 hours you get on most of the competition. Some kind of battery improvement would have been nice, but alas, no such luck.
I knew that the ANC was still going to be excellent. No doubt in mind. Bose has never let me down, and it's unlikely to start now. There's the same great ANC on board the gen 2 Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds, although there are now some subtle improvements.
They still play their signature orchestral swell to listen to the inside of your ear and adjust ANC accordingly, but I've found it's worked slightly better with the new version. Transparency mode has seen some improvements, too, with some AI implementation.
My dad sounded clearer in "aware mode" in the new buds than he did in the old model, and the sound of the outside world didn't feel quite as synthetic. Nice.
I quite like the way that the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds gen 2 look. They're a chunkier bud than the likes of the WF-1000XM5, but that's not something that bothers me too much. What does bother me is that they look almost entirely identical to the old model.
The only thing that keeps them differentiated is the color. For the most eagle-eyed, there are now grilles inside the eartips to stop dirt and grime getting into the audio bits inside, but that's not noticeable when they're in your ears.
To be clear, the new white smoke color I've got here is nice. But I would have liked to see some more visual updates.
The original QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds were already pretty good for calling people. Voices are crisp and noise isolation is used to make sure there isn't anything getting in the way of hearing your call partner.
The call quality in gen 2 has stepped up from what I can tell. There's apparently a new AI-powered noise suppression system, which makes sure that you're easier to hear on the other end of the call. I'll be doing more testing in the next few months, but things are looking pretty good at the moment.
Usually, I'd have more to say, even after only 24 hours with the buds — but this time around I simply don't. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds gen 2 are very, very similar pair to the gen 1 buds. They sound the same, and offer the same feature set, too.
My verdict at the moment — if you're buying a pair of the QC Ultra buds now, don't. Wait for the Gen 2 to arrive and you'll get the benefits of the few updated features. If you're thinking of upgrading, perhaps hang about and wait for our tech reviewers to finalize our testing. Because at the moment, this feels like a limited update.

Apple AirPods 4 are Prime Day cheap — snag a pair for just $89 while you still can

Prime Day has come and gone — but Apple deals are still going strong. In fact, the Apple AirPods 4 (without ANC) are now Prime Day cheap and at their lowest price ever. If you head over to Amazon right now, you'll find a $40 discount on the Apple AirPods 4, which brings them down to just $89. That's a total steal in my opinion. Plus, with back to school right around the corner, these earbuds will definitely come in handy for the new semester ahead. Additionally, the Apple AirPods 4 with ANC are sporting a $60 discount, bringing them down to just $119. So if you're looking for noise canceling, I recommend shelling out a few extra bucks and opting for this pair, which is still a bargain. The AirPods 4 are a very solid earbud option if you're an iPhone user who doesn't want to spend a lot on the AirPods Pro 2. We loved the AirPods 4 in our review, rating them 4 stars. We particularly like how they interconnect with all your Apple devices, including Macs, iPads and iPhones like magic. They sound good too — although if you're looking for ANC, you'll want the more expensive pair. The more expensive, ANC-enabled AirPods 4 are also still discounted at Amazon. This 34% saving also brings these headphones down to their lowest ever price. If you have a bit of extra cash, it's worth the extra spend to get that noise cancelling tech on board. If you're after an affordable AirPods option, the AirPods 4 and their super low price are definitely the way to go. One of our favorite things about the earbuds is that you can easily control music by squeezing the stems and they'll auto-pause when you take them out of your ears. Another great feature is the head-tracked Spatial Audio, which works with Apple Music. It makes your music sound like it's coming from every which way — something that not many other buds at this price point offer. Battery life at 5 hours isn't the best we've seen, but it'll last during your commute, study session or workout. The charging case is very small, so you'll have no problem fitting it into your pocket. Again, if you're looking for a noise-cancelling earbud, you should opt for the Apple AirPods 4 with ANC. It's definitely worth the extra $30 to get that noise cancelling tech on board. This deal price matches the Apple AirPod 4's lowest price ever. We don't know how long it will remain active, so hopping on this epic deal ASAP is your best bet.

Apple's AirPods 4 are up to 33 percent off right now

If you're on the market for a new pair of AirPods, you're in luck. The latest AirPods 4 are down to some of the best prices we've seen. You can pick up the standard AirPods 4 for $90, a 30-percent discount, or the AirPods 4 with ANC for $120, a 33 percent discount. While neither deal is quite as good as the ones we saw during the Prime day sale that just passed, you're only going to be an extra dollar down regardless of which model you go for. The non-ANC AirPods 4 were $89 for Prime Day (a record low), while the noise-cancelling buds could be snagged for $119. If you missed out then, these deals are virtually the same. 30 percent off is a near record low price. $90 at Amazon You really can't go wrong with the AirPods 4. While the AirPods Pro 2 remain our number one pick for the entire product category, we think the former are the best choice if you're on a budget. Apple's 'regular' earbuds were given a long overdue spruce-up in 2024, offering the option of ANC on the non-Pro AirPods for the first time, as well as an improved design and better sound quality. Whether you go for the ANC or entry level model, you'll benefit from the various features afforded by the H2 audio chip. These include Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Personalized Volume and Adaptive EQ. The AirPods 4 with ANC add Conversation Awareness, Adaptive Audio and a Transparency mode to the spec sheet. Downsides? You still can't change the volume using onboard controls, and the cheaper AirPods 4 don't come with a case that supports wireless charging via MagSage or Qi, which is a disappointment. The AirPods Pro 4 with ANC do a pretty good job of banishing low-frequency background noise, but the noise-canceling capabilities aren't quite as strong as what you get with the AirPods Pro 2. Limited-time deal: These $32 headphones rival Sony and Bose, fans say

It's no mystery why Tozo earbuds are popular — their low price and high quality make for a compelling, consumer-friendly package. Now, the company is hitting that sweet spot again with over-ear headphones, and its HT2 Headphones are on sale at Amazon. Fans compare them to notably higher-end options like Sony or Bose, which should tell you something: It's time to grab a pair for yourself. Especially now that they're at $32 — the lowest we've ever seen them. Why is this a good deal? 💰 Those Sony headphones we mentioned? Some of them go for nearly $400. These Tozos are less than a tenth of that price. (Even Sony's most affordable option — the WH-CH520s — are $57.) At 36% off, Tozo HT2s are the lowest price we've seen them and, quite frankly, a no-brainer. They're also available in seven colors (though prices vary by color). Why do I need these? 🤔 Let's start with the battery life. These cans get 60 hours of playback time on a single charge, which is absolutely bonkers. That's more than 700 songs or nearly 10 NYC-to-LA flights. The battery life drops a bit when you do have ANC (active noise cancelling) on, but you're still looking at about 40 hours of crisp, clear audio excellence. Don't worry, though. Even if they do manage to run out of juice, you can connect them through a wired connection to continue listening without missing a (literal) beat. The 40-millimeter drivers produce fantastic sound, including crisp high notes and clear bass. The ear cups are made of soft leather and automatically adjust to the wearer's head. The Tozo app lets you tweak the settings for different types of music. When it's time to stop listening, these fold up for easy storage and transport. What reviewers say 💬 These headphones have over 7,000 happy fans who vouch for their quality. Pros 👍 "These were purchased to replace a pair of Sony CH520s that got paint all over them. I think these Tozo headphones are better in every regard," one fan said. "They are comfortable (I wear glasses). The ear cups are ergonomic; each side has a range of pivot at the headpiece; the headpiece is adjustable (fits my weird head); the crown of the headpiece has nice padding. ... They sound amazing. The bass is deep without any adjustments. The sound is clearly better than the Sony." Another reviewer also wrote that the sound is on par with higher-end models. "I lost a pair of Bose over-the-ear headphones (yes, that was a painful $375 loss). I wanted to buy another set, but not at $375. Then I read about the quality and reliability of this brand, Tozo! What a wonderful surprise. The quality is comparable to my previous set." And one parent echoed that, "I originally bought these for my son but would not mind these for myself. These expensive-looking headphones deliver similar quality sound compared to some big-name brands." Cons 👎 Just because they can be used wired doesn't mean there are no strings attached ... so to speak. "One downside I found was the wired connection does not allow for noise cancelling. So if you are connected to something like a laptop that doesn't have Bluetooth, they will then work like regular headsets. So you may want a Bluetooth adapter in that case," shared one shopper. (If you need one, we recommend the TP-Link Bluetooth Adapter.) Another fan offered an audio-related gripe: "My only complaint is the beeping sound the headphones make when they have a low charge. I wished the sound could have been a little bit less sharp." The reviews quoted above reflect the most recent versions at the time of publication. If you have Amazon Prime, you'll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.) Looking for more great Amazon tech deals? Check these out:
