Rami Al Ali makes history as Syria's first couturier at Paris Haute Couture Week

Malay Mail3 days ago
PARIS, July 12 — Syrian couturier Rami Al Ali made history Thursday as the first fashion designer from his country to feature in the official Paris Haute Couture Week calendar in a new landmark for Arab representation in the luxury business.
After years of showing his tailored evening dresses on the sidelines of Couture Week, he was invited this year by France's Federation de la Haute Couture et de la Mode to join the programme.
He sent out models in long pleated dresses in pastel colours, making elaborate use of silk, rolled crepe fabric, embroidery and beading in a collection that reflected his optimism about the future of his war-ravaged country.
'We called the collection the 'Guardian of Light', and it came at a time that is very hopeful, very promising,' the 53-year-old told AFP beforehand.

The fall of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in December led to the rise of rebel-turned-transitional leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, which has brought a fragile end to nearly 14 years of civil war.
Al Ali, who grew up in the eastern Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor before moving to Dubai, where he founded his brand more than 20 years ago, was holding back tears as he spoke to reporters afterwards.
He told AFP he had been feeling 'nervous, excited, tired, happy' about his breakthrough moment, which follows years of dressing A-listers and royalty including Beyonce and Oscar winner Helen Mirren.
'Bolder, braver'
After decades of Syria being a byword for violence and political oppression, Al Ali hopes that artists will now help highlight the country's rich history and design culture.
'I think now we have much more freedom in expressing ourselves in all different aspects, political, humanitarian, creative. We have a lot to say, and definitely we are bolder, braver in the way we express it,' he said.

Haute Couture Week is separate from the ready-to-wear Paris Fashion Week and is dedicated to handcrafted, one-of-a-kind creations made for red carpet events, galas, and other high-profile social occasions.
The programme this week included two designers from Lebanon — Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad — as well as Cameroon's Imane Ayissi, the sole sub-Saharan African label included in the calendar.
Saudi Arabian designer Mohammed Ashi's brand Ashi Studio was also in the programme.
Ayissi, who joined the Couture calendar in 2020 at the same time as much-hyped Indian designer Rahul Mishra, paid tribute to the increasing diversity on the Paris fashion circuit.
'It shows that things are changing, that things are moving forward,' former model Ayissi told AFP this week after his show, which made elaborate use of traditional African textiles. — AFP

Unreleased Beyonce music stolen from car during her tour in Atlanta

Thieves allegedly broke into an SUV near downtown Atlanta last week and stole several items that belonged to superstar Beyonce (pic), including unreleased music, footage plans for her tour shows, and past and future set lists, authorities said Monday. Atlanta police confirmed an arrest warrant was issued for a suspect following the vehicle theft at Krog Street Market on July 8, just two days before the Grammy Award-winning musician's Cowboy Carter Tour kicked off in Atlanta. Authorities are not sharing the alleged thief's name, but the person remains at large, police confirmed. Beyonce's choreographer, Christopher Grant, and one of her dancers, Diandre Blue, said they parked a rented black Jeep Wagoneer in the market's parking deck at 99 Krog Street around 8pm, according to a police report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution . They returned to the vehicle an hour later and saw the trunk window was damaged and two suitcases filled with their belongings had been taken, the report stated. Grant said he was also carrying hard drives that contained 'personal sensitive information for the musician Beyonce,' according to police. 'The hard drives contained water-marked music, some unreleased music, footage plans for her show, and past and future set list,' an officer wrote in the report. Other items listed in the report as stolen included laptops, clothes, Tom Ford sunglasses, a book bag and a pair of AirPods Max headphones. The AJC has reached out to a spokesperson for Beyonce, her choreographer and her dancer for comment. Police said cameras managed to capture the theft at the entrance of the parking deck, and officers canvassed the area. Law enforcement then used the Find My app to search for the headphones that were pinging at an undisclosed location, where officers 'conducted a suspicious person stop,' the report stated. 'After further investigation, a silver (redacted) which had also traveled into Zone 5 was moving at the same time as the tracking on the AirPods,' the report stated. 'Larceny from automobile investigators were on scene and flagged the vehicle on the system.' An officer dusted for prints and was able to 'retrieve two very light prints,' though police haven't confirmed if they were from the unidentified suspect who remains at large, the report said. The theft happened as thousands of excited fans prepared to descend upon Atlanta for four star-studded nights of the star's tour at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. – The Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Tribune News Service

Unreleased Beyonce music stolen from car in Atlanta

ATLANTA: Unreleased music by global superstar Beyonce and confidential concert plans were stolen from a rental car in Atlanta last week, police confirmed. The theft occurred on July 8, just two days before the Atlanta leg of her 'Cowboy Carter' tour began. According to a police report, the stolen items belonged to Beyonce's choreographer, Christopher Grant, 37, and a dancer. Grant discovered the car's rear window smashed and luggage missing, including multiple jump drives containing watermarked and unreleased music, show footage, and set lists. An Apple MacBook, headphones, and luxury clothing were also taken. Police traced the MacBook and headphones to a location but did not recover the items. Authorities issued an arrest warrant for an unnamed suspect, who remains at large. The 'Cowboy Carter' tour, launched in April, follows Beyonce's historic Grammy win for Album of the Year in 2024. The country-themed album highlights Black artists' contributions to the genre, challenging industry norms. Beyonce wrapped up her Atlanta performances on Monday, with two final shows scheduled in Las Vegas later this month. - AFP

Unreleased Beyonce tracks, tour plans stolen in Atlanta car break-in

WASHINGTON, July 15 — Computer drives containing unreleased music by US superstar Beyonce Knowles and plans related to her concerts were stolen last week in Atlanta, police said Monday, with a suspect still at large. The items were stolen from a rental car used by Knowles's choreographer and a dancer on July 8, two days before the pop icon kicked off the Atlanta leg of her Cowboy Carter tour, a police incident report said. Choreographer Christopher Grant, 37, told police that he returned to the car to find its rear-window smashed and their luggage stolen. Inside were multiple jump drives that 'contained water marked music, some un-released music, footage plans for the show, and past and future set list (sic),' the report said. Also missing were an Apple MacBook, headphones and several items of luxury clothing. Police investigated an area where the MacBook and headphones had pinged their location, but the report did not mention any items being recovered. Atlanta Police said in an online statement that a warrant had been issued for an unnamed suspect's arrest, but that the suspect remained at large. Knowles ends her four-night stint in Atlanta on Monday and then wraps up the Cowboy Carter tour in late July in Las Vegas. The tour kicked off in April after the global superstar took home her first 'Album of the Year' Grammy for the country-themed album. — AFP
