How Karnataka's iconic Mysore Sandal Soap overshot targets, clocked highest ever sales
(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated July 14, 2025)In mid-May, one of Karnataka's best-known cultural brands, Mysore Sandal Soap, found itself in a bit of lather. Pro-Kannada activists were upset that Karnataka Soaps & Detergents Ltd (KS&DL), the state-owned company that manufactures the iconic 109-year-old soap, had chosen actor Tamannaah Bhatia as its brand ambassador instead of a Kannadiga celebrity. But even as it hastened to defuse the row, KS&DL had much to thank the controversy for. The firm clocked its best-ever sales for the month of May at Rs 186 crore, a 24 per cent bump from the target of Rs 150 The soap maker has been on a winning streak in the past few years, with annual sales almost doubling since 2020-21 to Rs 1,780 crore in 2024-25; net profit grew almost four-fold from Rs 113 crore to Rs 415 crore in the same period. Ramping up production and online marketing played a big role in this, says its MD, Prashanth India accounts for over 80 per cent of the sales for KS&DL, with Andhra Pradesh the biggest market. Hence, the push into other regions, especially the north. It's also why 'pan-India star' Tamannaah was signed up. KS&DL has set itself a target of Rs 5,000 crore in annual turnover by 2028. It is investing Rs 250 crore in a new plant at Vijayapura in north Karnataka and also eyeing diversification into new products. 'We are taking it nationaland even international in the future,' says M.B. Patil, Karnataka's minister of large and medium industries. 'Then perhaps we'll need a Hollywood celebrity to endorse us,' he to India Today Magazine- EndsMust Watch

LL Cool J says he wont perform at Philadelphias July Fourth festival in support of workers strike
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rapper LL Cool J and R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan say they will not perform at a Fourth of July festival in Philadelphia in support of a strike by nearly 10,000 city workers in Philadelphia. LL Cool J had been scheduled to appear at the Wawa Welcome America Festival on Friday, along with Sullivan and other performers. LL Cool J said in a video posted on social media that 'there's absolutely no way that I can perform, cross a picket line and pick up money when I know that people are out there fighting for a living wage.' 'I hope, I hope, I hope that, you know, the mayor and the city can make a deal. I hope it works out,' he said. LL Cool J also said that he never wants to disappoint his fans and that he plans to be in Philadelphia in case an agreement is reached. The festival comes as the strike moved into a fourth day Friday. Trash has been piling up in some areas, and more than 30 Medical Examiner's Office staffers have been ordered back to work because of a growing backlog of bodies in storage. Sullivan, a Philadelphia native and Grammy award-winning artist, said in a post on Instagram on Friday that she would stand with the striking workers 'until the city and the union find a way to bring fair living wages to our working class. I love my city and I believe in you,' she wrote. 'Hopefully we will get to celebrate when things are better.' The latest talks between the city and leaders of District Council 33 — the largest of four major unions representing city workers — ended late Wednesday. Both sides have said they were willing to continue negotiations. The union represents many of the city's blue-collar workers, from trash collectors to clerks to security guards. Police and firefighters are not on strike. The city has offered a three-year contract with annual raises of about 3%, which the union said amounts to little more than $1,000 after taxes for members making $46,000 a year on average. Mayor Cherelle Parker has said the city has 'put its best offer on the table.' She stressed that the effective 13% pay hike over her four-year term -- including last year's 5% bump – along with a fifth step on the pay scale would be the best contract the union has seen in decades. Parker responded to LL Cool J's statement, saying that she spoke with him on Thursday. "I respect his decision, and understand his desire to see the city unified," the mayor said. 'He is always welcome in Philadelphia.' The union also responded, saying LL Cool J's support for municipal workers 'highlights his commitment to social justice and community well-being.' 'His support not only brings attention to our efforts but also inspires others to recognize and advocate for the rights and respect of all workers,' the union said. 'It's heartening to see public figures using their influence to champion causes that matter to everyday people.' On Thursday, Common Pleas Court Judge Sierra Thomas-Street approved the city's request to have the medical examiner's office staffers return to work because bodies have been piling up there in storage, posing a health and safety risk. Those workers include death and forensic investigators, forensic technicians and clerks. The order came a day after the judge ordered some emergency service dispatchers and essential water department employees back to work. Mounting trash piles in some parts of the city were also still causing grief for residents and officials, who have strongly urged residents to follow the collection guidelines imposed when the strike began Tuesday. They also urged residents to report problems at the trash collection sites, and noted trash is being cleared as fast as possible and the city is working to open more sites.

Who's winning football's Instagram game? The numbers might surprise you
On the field, they chase goals. Off it, they chase eyeballs. In today's digital era, Instagram follower counts can rival trophies. While Cristiano Ronaldo might be known as the all-time top scorer in international football, Lionel Messi is close behind with his 8 Ballon d'Ors. Both players have become legends, and their social media offers fans a window into their lives. Meanwhile, in the younger generation, Kylian Mbappé has surged past 100 million followers already with his next-gen charisma, while Erling Haaland has begun the pick up the pace and may soon be right beside him. As of July 4, 2025, these four redefine what it means to score, both in stadiums and social feeds. Cristiano Ronaldo: The undisputed No. 1 Ronaldo's 3,912 uploads show off some high-impact brand campaigns, after-workout pictures and intimate family gatherings. His 659 million followers put him in a league of his own, but not one that gets to his head. His compassion shines through, especially in his latest post, where he expressed his sadness for Diogo Jota's passing. Lionel Messi: Quiet power, massive reach Messi may not flood Instagram like Ronaldo, but 506 million followers say plenty. His 1,380 posts lean more into simplicity than anything else: crisp action shots, gentle family moments and sponsored content. His most recent share—a reaction to a Club World Cup defeat by PSG—turned a loss into a shared experience. Kylian Mbappé: The future has arrived Mbappé, at 124 million followers, owns the digital space for the new generation. With 1,394 uploads, he balances field sessions with his off-pitch hobbies and club announcements. His shout-out to Real Madrid's upcoming Club World Cup bid mixes ambition with approachability, hinting at future follower growth should they win. Erling Haaland: Rising, fast Haaland rounds out the group with 38 million followers. His 785 posts focus on match highlights, promotional content and a few personal updates. His latest post, congratulating Al Hilal's win, reveals a side of him fans seldom see: genuine disappointment and respect. As City's goal machine breaks records, his Instagram audience is set up for its own surge.
