How Karnataka's iconic Mysore Sandal Soap overshot targets, clocked highest ever sales

India Today7 hours ago
(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated July 14, 2025)In mid-May, one of Karnataka's best-known cultural brands, Mysore Sandal Soap, found itself in a bit of lather. Pro-Kannada activists were upset that Karnataka Soaps & Detergents Ltd (KS&DL), the state-owned company that manufactures the iconic 109-year-old soap, had chosen actor Tamannaah Bhatia as its brand ambassador instead of a Kannadiga celebrity. But even as it hastened to defuse the row, KS&DL had much to thank the controversy for. The firm clocked its best-ever sales for the month of May at Rs 186 crore, a 24 per cent bump from the target of Rs 150 crore.advertisement
The soap maker has been on a winning streak in the past few years, with annual sales almost doubling since 2020-21 to Rs 1,780 crore in 2024-25; net profit grew almost four-fold from Rs 113 crore to Rs 415 crore in the same period. Ramping up production and online marketing played a big role in this, says its MD, Prashanth P.K.M.South India accounts for over 80 per cent of the sales for KS&DL, with Andhra Pradesh the biggest market. Hence, the push into other regions, especially the north. It's also why 'pan-India star' Tamannaah was signed up.
KS&DL has set itself a target of Rs 5,000 crore in annual turnover by 2028. It is investing Rs 250 crore in a new plant at Vijayapura in north Karnataka and also eyeing diversification into new products. 'We are taking it nationaland even international in the future,' says M.B. Patil, Karnataka's minister of large and medium industries. 'Then perhaps we'll need a Hollywood celebrity to endorse us,' he quipped.Subscribe to India Today Magazine- EndsMust Watch

Welfare schemes introduced by govt reached every household: Minister Bharath

Kurnool: AndhraPradesh Industries, Commerce, and Food Processing Minister TG Bharath has stated that welfare schemes introduced by the State Government have successfully reached every household over the past year. The minister was speaking during his visit to Ashok Nagar in Kurnool city as part of the 'First Step Towards Good Governance' campaign on Friday. As part of the programme, he conducted a door-to-door campaign in the 45th municipal ward, interacting directly with residents. He spoke to women, senior citizens, and students to assess the implementation of welfare initiatives and sought specific details on the schemes received by each household. The initiative aims to provide citizens with transparent information on the government's developmental and welfare measures while addressing any existing concerns. 'The direction from Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is clear — from the grassroots to the top leadership, we must connect with the people and explain the progress made in one year of governance,' said Bharath. 'We are not only highlighting achievements but are also committed to resolving public grievances on the spot. The government is determined to deliver on every promise made, and more welfare schemes will be launched soon.' Addressing local development, the minister said efforts are underway to widen key roads in Kurnool city, particularly in front of the medical college, where narrow stretches have led to recurring accidents. He also announced that affected shop owners would be allotted commercial space at a subsidized rent of Rs.300 per month for 25 years, with provisions for renewal. Responding to citizen feedback during the event, Bharath promised to resolve drainage issues in Ashok Nagar and construct a protective wall around a hazardous transformer in Chaitanya Nagar.

This district in India has per capita income higher than Japan, become richest and fastest-growing area in..., name is..., located in... Gautam Buddha Nagar, which includes the cities of Noida and Greater Noida, has become the richest and fastest-growing area in Uttar Pradesh. In fact, its income levels are now being compared to a developed country like Japan (when seen using purchasing power parity or PPP, which adjusts for cost of living differences). As per a report by Times of India, the per person income (per capita income) in GB Nagar is Rs. 10.17 lakh, which is over 10 times the state's average. That's a huge gap. It even places this district in a different league altogether when compared globally. In the financial year 2023–24, GB Nagar's GDP was Rs. 2.63 lakh crore which was more than 10 per cent of Uttar Pradesh's entire economy and nearly double the size of Lucknow's economy. It's also bigger than the whole economy of Himachal Pradesh. Per capita income of other cities with a global comparison GB Nagar: Rs. 10.17 lakh – Similar to Japan Lucknow: Rs. 2.16 lakh – Close to India's national average Ghaziabad: Rs. 2.11 lakh – Comparable to Morocco Hamirpur: Rs. 1.46 lakh – Similar to Côte d'Ivoire Sonbhadra: Rs. 1.44 lakh – Like Pakistan Sadly, some districts in eastern UP like Pratapgarh, Jaunpur, and Ballia have very low per capita incomes which is close to those of poor countries such as Afghanistan or Mali when seen through the PPP lens. While Gautam Buddha Nagar races ahead like a developed country, many other districts in UP are still struggling to catch up. Bottom 5 districts of Uttar Pradesh in form of GDP Uttar Pradesh's economy shows a huge divide. Just the top 5 districts — Gautam Buddha Nagar, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Agra, and Kanpur — together produce over 25 per cent of the entire state's GDP. On the other hand, the bottom 5 districts contribute less than 2.5 per cent. Even though Lucknow is the capital, it still lags far behind Gautam Buddha Nagar (GB Nagar) in income per person. GB Nagar's per capita income is five times higher than Lucknow's, and a shocking 23 times higher than Pratapgarh, which is the poorest district by this measure. While GB Nagar is booming, districts like Shravasti, Chitrakoot, Sant Kabir Nagar, Auraiya, and Bhadohi are still struggling. These five districts together produce less GDP than Kanpur Nagar alone. For example, Shravasti's GDP is just Rs. 8,593 crore which is 30 times smaller than GB Nagar's economy. Why GB Nagar stands out GB Nagar's rapid rise isn't random. It benefits from: Being close to Delhi Well-planned infrastructure Strong private investment A growing industrial and IT sector It has also become a centre for real estate, electronics, data centres, and logistics, all of which help boost local incomes and attract more business.
