Women told to be aware of rights, protections
Puttaparthi: Andhra Pradesh State Women's Commission chairperson Dr Rayapati Shailaja declared that supporting women in distress and ensuring the safety of every girl is a primary objective of the government. Speaking at a district-level awareness programme here on Thursday, she underscored the critical need for women and girls to be aware of their rights, legal protections, and safety measures. The event, organised by the department of women and child welfare, was attended by key officials including district SP V Ratna and Puttaparthi MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy. In her address, Dr Shailaja called for a proactive approach to safety. 'Awareness must begin at the school and college level. Instead of reacting only after crimes occur, it is crucial to take preventive steps,' she stated, referencing persistent issues like child marriages, domestic violence, and workplace harassment. Dr Shailaja urged young women to be courageous and problem-solvers, advising them to download the Disha (Shakti) App for immediate help in emergencies. She cautioned against the misuse of mobile phones and encouraged them to pursue their dreams with determination, calling education the key to success. She also highlighted the responsibility of parents to educate both sons and daughters equally about safety and respect. Echoing these sentiments, district SP Ratna noted that the police department is also conducting similar awareness programmes and highlighted the availability of the Eagle app and the toll-free number 1972 for quick response to safety complaints. MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy championed gender equality, reminding the audience that girls are capable of achieving anything, including space missions, and that education is essential to their empowerment. The programme concluded with the unveiling of a poster supporting women in distress and the release of a book on protecting children in the digital age, reinforcing the multi-faceted approach to ensuring women's welfare in the state.

Bhandara police launch QR code-based initiative, task force to combat drug trafficking
Nagpur: In a pioneering move, Bhandara police launched an innovative anti-narcotics initiative, deploying more than 1,000 QR codes across the district to enable citizens to report drug-related activities anonymously. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This marks the first time such a large-scale QR code-based system, conceptualised by Bhandara SP Noorul Hasan, has been implemented in Maharashtra to combat drug trafficking and abuse. Alongside this, the police established a three-layered task force structure and introduced student-oriented anti-narcotics clubs to bolster their campaign. Bhandara, a key transit zone for ganja in eastern Vidarbha, lies at the crossroads of six national and one state highway, making it a hub for peddlers sourcing ganja from Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Gondia, and Nagpur. Recently, SP Hasan's team intercepted 167 kg ganja en route to Nagpur, underscoring the district's role as a trafficking corridor. "Bhandara has a large consumer base, with many youths at risk. Our goal is to disrupt the supply chain," said Hasan, whose concept of QR code patrolling was first implemented in Nagpur and then across Maharashtra. The Bhandara police's month-long Operation Jagaar Nashamukti Abhiyaan, launched last week in the presence of collector Sanjay Kolte, adopts a three-pronged strategy: enforcement, awareness, and rehabilitation. Each of the district's 17 police stations will feature at least 50 QR codes placed at key locations, allowing citizens to report drug nodes discreetly. Additionally, 25 complaint boxes have been installed across these stations for anonymous tip-offs via secret letters. A dedicated WhatsApp number managed by SP Noorul Hasan further complements this three-layer anonymous reporting system. The task forces, each led by officers, operate at three levels: individual police stations, the Local Crime Branch (LCB), and Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs) at the division level. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In order to engage and involve the youth, Bhandara police have introduced anti-narcotics clubs on campuses and organised anti-drug competitions to foster a new mindset among students. A nine-point agenda focuses on spreading awareness through school and college visits, where core teams will form student groups to amplify anti-drug messages through debates, competitions, walkathons, street plays, and so on. The Disha programme for helping students prepare for competitive examinations, another key initiative of Bhandara police, collaborates with four rehabilitation shelters to support recovering addicts. The Bhandara police also partnered with Maharashtra's skill development department to provide employment opportunities for rehabilitated individuals, aiding their reintegration into society. This multi-faceted approach, blending technology, community engagement, and rehabilitation, positions Bhandara's campaign as a potential model for tackling the drug menace across Maharashtra. The operation is set to conclude on August 15.
