Israel Adesanya says Sean Strickland rematch not happening next, eyes October return
LAS VEGAS – Don't hold your breath for a Sean Strickland vs. Israel Adesanya rematch. It doesn't look like that fight will try to get worked on, at least not any time soon.
Adesanya (24-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) was angling for the Strickland rematch just a few months ago and was very vocal in calling for that bout. However, speaking to reporters at the 2025 UFC Hall of Fame ceremony last Thursday, Adesanya had a very different tone and didn't give much hope of the rematch being next.
"I want to, but he's busy at the moment with other stuff, so that's him," Adesanya told reporters. "But we'll see. I'll pick a fight this weekend."
Adesanya last fought in February, losing by TKO to top contender Nassourdine Imavov in the main event of UFC Fight Night 250 in Saudi Arabia. The former UFC middleweight champion would like to fight again in that part of the world and thinks the Oct. 25 UFC pay-per-view in Abu Dhabi "sounds nice."
"The Last Stylebender" also reveled that there's not a big interest in rematching champion Dricus du Plessis in hopes of getting his belt back. He does see him staying champion and getting past his next title defense – a main event booking for UFC 319 on Aug. 16 against Khamzat Chimaev.
"I got DDP because he's stubborn," Adesanya said. "Khamzat is a beast, but DDP is just weird and stubborn, and he's got real power."

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. President Donald Trump has said he is thinking of hosting an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event at the White House to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence next year. Trump said the event would be a "full fight" with about 20,000 to 25,000 people in attendance. "So every one of our national parks, battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of America 250. And I even think we're going to have a UFC fight," the president said during a speech at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines on Thursday. Newsweek contacted the White House and UFC for comment by email outside regular working hours. President Donald Trump at a rally at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines on July 3. Alex Brandon/AP Why It Matters Trump, an enthusiast for the sport, has attended multiple mixed martial arts matches in recent months and is a friend of Dana White, the UFC's president. The unprecedented White House event forms part of Trump's broader effort to celebrate the nation's 250th birthday, which is also expected to feature national ceremonies, military flyovers and special programs at national parks. Trump has also described plans for the "Great American State Fair," a nationwide series of events culminating on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Each state would have a pavilion to showcase its culture and contributions. What To Know Speaking in Iowa on Thursday, Trump said: "We're going to have a UFC fight, think of this, on the grounds of the White House. We have a lot of land there." "Dana is going to do it," he continued, adding, "We are going to have a UFC fight—championship fight, full fight, like 20-25,000 people—and we are going to do that as part of 250 also." White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed after the speech that Trump was "dead serious" about hosting the event. Trump has regularly attended UFC fights, most recently last month in Newark, New Jersey. He also attended a fight in Miami in April. Trump's friendship with White goes back to at least 2001, when he allowed the UFC to hold a fight at his Trump Taj Mahal hotel in Atlantic City. White also introduced Trump at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last July. What People Are Saying A UFC official told CNN: "We are in discussions with the White House about hosting a UFC event on site." President Donald Trump said during his Memorial Day address in May: "We're gonna have a big, big celebration, as you know, 250 years. … In some ways, I'm glad I missed that second term where it was because I wouldn't be your president for that." Monica Crowley, the chief of protocol of the U.S., said: "We've had so much division and so much polarization over the last many decades, but certainly over the last few years, that to be able to bring the country together to celebrate America's 250th birthday through patriotism, shared values and a renewed sense of civic pride, to be able to do that in the center of the country, is incredibly important." What Happens Next Officials have not yet confirmed a date for the proposed UFC fight or provided logistic details.

Trump, the octagon and the nation's birthday: How did they all end up in the cage together?
President Donald Trump likes to be cage-side for a battle. And fans give raucous cheers when they see him there, adding to a constituency base Trump has built among fighting sports fanatics. Trump's announcement on Thursday, July 3 that he plans to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship event at the White House next year may come as a shock to some. But Trump's love for the octagon - and his support for its fans and stars - isn't new. Advertisement His public relations team says it's part of his appeal to a segment of the public that is not known for reading mainstream news media. "The audience gets to see him through an unvarnished filter that isn't tainted by news media and political biases,' Trump's White House communications director Steven Cheung told the Associated Press in 2023. 'It gives us the great opportunity to connect with voters who are, quite frankly, turned off by many traditional news outlets.' Cheung himself is intimately familiar with the cage fighting world of the UFC. He was the organization's spokesman before Trump handpicked him to be his communications director. It's not all about votes and public image. Trump's fascination for mixed martial arts goes back years and his support for fighting sports goes back even further to his days hosting WrestleMania in Atlantic City, N.J. in 1988. Advertisement Trump said this week that the UFC event during the White House's celebration of the nation's 250th birthday will be part of a broader package of events. But he emphasized it as a highlight. "We're going to have some incredible events, some professional events, some amateur events. But the UFC fight is going to be a big deal, too," Trump told a crowd at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on July 3. "We're going to have a UFC fight on the grounds of the White House. Championship fight - full fight." He said he expects that the fighting card will host close to 25,000 spectators at the White House. Trump and the octagon The UFC's CEO Dana White is a friend of the president. White introduced Trump at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in 2024. Advertisement "I know President Trump is a fighter," White said while introducing Trump to the crowd. "I'm in the tough guy business and this man is the toughest, most resilient human being that I've ever met in my life." White and Trump have been friends for 25 years, the CEO said at the convention. The first UFC fight held under the ownership of White and his partners was held at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City in 2001. Trump "gave us our start when nobody would talk to us," White told Fox News in 2018. Trump has frequented UFC bouts with famous entourages in the years since the first fight under White. Advertisement His first public appearance after his conviction on hush money charges in 2024 was at a high-profile UFC event in Newark, N.J. Video from the event shows Trump, newly convicted felon on all 34 counts, entering the stadium through the fighters' tunnel to raucous applause. Trump attended another UFC event with White, Elon Musk and Kid Rock last November shortly after becoming president-elect. Again, Trump received a warm welcome from the crowd before the start of the main card action. One of the top men in Trump's corner Cheung, the former UFC director of communications, became the Trump campaign's director of rapid response, whose focus was on "keeping the campaign up to date on breaking news and pushing back on false or unbalanced reporting." Advertisement According to Sports Joe, Cheung had a reputation of revoking the media credentials of reporters he didn't like. At least four reporters had their credentials revoked due to Cheung, the sports news outlet reported. A former high school football player, Cheung became a martial arts fan and dabbled in taekwondo and Muay Thai boxing, according to a Mother Jones profile of Cheung. "To the Trump campaign, which had a hard time attracting seasoned professionals, Cheung's past political work—and perhaps even more so his role with the UFC—made him an ideal hire," the publication wrote. Political analysts have opined for years that Trump has cleverly used combat sports venues such as UFC to cheaply and effectively reach out to voters who don't read mainstream news media or follow election campaigns. It's also given him visual appeal as a fellow UFC fan to Latino and Black fans of UFC. Trump's high-profile visibility at Ultimate Fighting Championship events has garnered praise from past champions of the sport, including Colby Covington, who have openly praised Trump in front of UFC crowds and elsewhere.
