Thundershowers, downdraft wind expected across parts of Oman

Zawya5 days ago
Muscat: The Civil Aviation Authority has issued a weather alert, highlighting the development of thundershowers and strong downdraft winds over several parts of the Sultanate.
According to the latest forecast, weather conditions will remain unstable over parts of the Al Hajar Mountains, adjacent areas in Al Wusta Governorate, and sections of Dhofar Governorate, beginning from 1:00 PM.
Cumulonimbus clouds are actively forming over the Hajar range, bringing the likelihood of scattered rainfall, some of which may be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong downdraft winds. The strength of these weather systems is considered moderate but could still result in reduced visibility, particularly in areas affected by dust or fog.
In southern Oman, the influence of the Khareef monsoon continues to dominate. Coastal areas of Dhofar and the adjacent mountain ranges are witnessing increased cloud cover with conditions favorable for light, intermittent drizzle. Simultaneously, clouds continue to flow over parts of both Al Wusta and Dhofar, maintaining a generally cloudy to overcast sky across those regions.
Elsewhere in the Sultanate, the skies are expected to remain mostly clear. However, there is a chance of cloud formation over parts of the Al Hajar Mountains, with occasional isolated showers that may be accompanied by thunderstorms.
The forecast also includes the possibility of low clouds and fog patches forming late at night and into the early morning, especially along the coastal zones of both the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman. Over desert and open areas, the rise of dust due to active wind conditions may further contribute to a drop in visibility.

Oman: $5mln spent on maintenance work of aflaj across North Sharqiyah

Ibra – Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has completed maintenance work of 162 aflaj in North Sharqiyah as part of efforts to sustain traditional water systems vital to agriculture and rural communities. The work, covering 90% of a total target of 179 aflaj across several wilayats, cost more than RO2mn. The effort is part of the ministry's broader plan to rehabilitate aflaj damaged by extreme weather events, including the Al Mutayr depression that affected the governorate last year. Hamad bin Rashid al Sawai from the Directorate General of Agriculture and Water Resources in North Sharqiyah said assessments were carried out by local agriculture and water departments in coordination with the Water Resources Department. These teams assessed the extent of damage, developed technical plans, issued tenders and monitored project execution on site. Of the total 179 targeted, 78 aflaj are in Dima wa al Taiyyin, 30 in Wadi Bani Khalid, 21 in Ibra, 19 in Al Qabil, 17 in Al Mudhaibi, ten in Bidiyah and four in Sinaw. North Sharqiyah has a total of 571 registered aflaj, many of which are the key source of water for farming and domestic use across the governorate's diverse terrain. These traditional irrigation channels, recognised as a Unesco heritage system in Oman, continue to play a critical role in managing water resources, especially in remote and agriculture dependent villages. © Apex Press and Publishing Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Weather alert as heavy rain falls in parts of Al Ain and Dubai

Heavy rain was reported in parts of Al Ain and Dubai on Monday afternoon by the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). It issued an alert on social media channels urging people to take care during the rain. 'Loose objects and weak structures may become hazardous due to the strong winds and can reduce horizontal visibility, please stay away from areas of accumulated rain,' the NCM wrote on social media platform X. Heavy rain was reported as falling in parts of Dubai. There was moderate rain recorded over the Al Qudra area of the emirate. In Al Ain, heavy rain was recorded over Al Faqa with moderate and light showers elsewhere. The showers came as hot and dusty weather is expected across the UAE this week, with a chance of more rain on Tuesday. Humidity levels will rise at night and in the early mornings, especially in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, throughout this week. This could lead to fog or mist, making for poor driving visibility. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain high, with the hottest areas in inland cities such as Al Ain, where they could reach 47°C on Thursday. Temperatures in coastal areas, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, will be between 40°C and 46°C this week. Mountainous regions will be slightly cooler, with highs in the upper 30°Cs.
