Aggie Heroics: Former Texas A&M outfielder walks off MiLB showdown
Former Texas A&M Aggie Braden Montgomery continued to display his highlight-worthy abilities at the plate by driving a two-RBI walk-off double to secure the Chicago White Sox High-A affiliate Winston-Salem Dash a 5-4 victory on Sunday night.
In April and May, the Madison, Mississippi, native has recorded 39 RBI in 42 contests. What better way to cap off the National Italian Beef Day celebration than a Montgomery game-winner in the bottom of the ninth inning?
After transferring from Stanford in 2023, the former unanimous First-Team All-American decorated Blue Bell Park in Bryan-College Station, Texas, with 27 home runs and 85 RBI through 61 contests before suffering a season-ending injury.
The switch hitter, who also happens to pitch, was then drafted No. 12 by the Boston Red Sox in the 2024 MLB Draft. As the No. 8-ranked player on MLB's Pipeline rankings, Montgomery expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to practice amongst a Texas A&M roster filled with left-handed pitchers.
"Something that I was really excited to come to A&M and experience was, we've got a lot of lefties. So in all of our inner squads, I was able to take a lot of right-handed at-bats. It was really helpful to see all of those pitchers in preparation for the season. And at that time, I was in a really good spot right-handed, so I'm excited to see more of that," Montgomer told the MLB Pipeline Podcast in July last year.
Montgomery is now tearing up the minor leagues with incredible outings like Sunday night's walk-off victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades. Since entering the MiLB this year, Montgomery has recorded 47 hits, including seven homers.
His next appearance on the diamond will take place on Tuesday, May 27, as the Dash begin a six-game road stretch against the Hub City Spartan Burgers.

Tim McGraw thrills crowd before MLB Speedway Classic

MLB tried something new, sort of new. The Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds were supposed to play a baseball game on a field inside Bristol Motor Speedway. Problem is that the weather didn't cooperate and it rained and rained until after two hours play was suspended with the Reds leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first. The game will be picked up on Sunday afternoon. The idea riffs off something college football has done but weather isn't usually a problem for that sport. What did take place was a pregame concert featuring Tim McGraw. That went off without a hitch. No word on whether the Speedway Classic will be renamed Field of Streams. White Sox INF Miguel Vargas sidelined by a left oblique strain

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas was scratched from Saturday night's game at the Los Angeles Angels because of a left oblique strain. Vargas was replaced at first base by Lenyn Sosa. The White Sox said Vargas is being further evaluated. Vargas, 25, was acquired from the Dodgers as part of a three-team trade in July 2024. He is batting .229 with 13 homers and 44 RBIs in 106 games. Prior to the matchup with the Angels, the White Sox placed right-hander Dan Altavilla on the 15-day injured list with a right lat strain. Right-hander Owen White was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. The team also announced that first baseman Ryan Noda was claimed off waivers by Baltimore. The 32-year-old Altavilla is 0-1 with a 2.36 ERA and two saves in 25 games with Chicago this year. ___ AP MLB:
