Erie Seawolves debut as rebranded Moon Mammoths after winning contest on HBO's "Last Week Tonight With John Oliver"

On Saturday night, excitement was in the air in Erie, Pennsylvania, as the MiLB's Erie Seawolves started playing under a new name: the Erie Moon Mammoths. The Seawolves are the Double-A affiliate for the Detroit Tigers, and they got their new alter ego after winning a rebranding contest put on by none other than HBO's "Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver and his team. The Seawolves beat out 47 other minor league teams to win this rebrand, and the only stipulation the Seawolves had to agree to for all this was that they would have no say in the new name, logo and mascot. Oliver and his comedy writers went to work, dug deep and found the story of George Moon, who discovered a 12,000-year-old Mammoth fossil in Erie County in the summer of 1991. From there, it wasn't a stretch for them to come up with the new team name. Oliver unveiled the Moon Mammoths on his show a few weeks ago, and on Saturday night at UPMC Park in Erie, Oliver headlined a sold-out game with over 6,000 fans to welcome the Moon Mammoths to town. "I think this is less about me," Oliver told KDKA-TV. "I am excited to see what Erie does with this in the future because now we are done. So, I am excited to see what you'll do with this group of ingredients. It is like a very odd episode of "Chopped." We have given you some odd ingredients here. I cannot wait to go and see the cake-adjacent thing that you are about to bake." When asked how he felt about all the hype around this new mascot, George Moon, the mammoth fossil finder said, "If you had bet me 34 years ago on something like this, I would have not taken the money, I would have lost. This is great. I love it for Erie. It is great for the community, for the ballpark, for everybody around." Fans were over the moon for this rebrand, too. "I thought it was awesome. As soon as I saw the logo and the mascot, I was excited and I was flipping out," said Kim Conti from Erie. And Moon Mammoth merch was flying off the shelves both at the park and online. "My husband was right on it," said Sharon Correll of Erie. "He is a Seawolves fan. He heard about this on the John Oliver show, and he was right there getting everything ordered." The Moon Mammoths will be the SeaWolves' alter-egos. The team will appear as the Mammoths for several games this season and could potentially play as them for a few games next year as well. Here's What's On The Menu At Minor League Ballparks This Summer

Minor League ballparks are stepping up their food game with bold, regional flavors and photo-worthy ... More creations designed to wow fans and tickle their taste buds. Last season, Minor League Baseball (MiLB) drew more than 30 million fans across its 120 teams all over the United States. From Triple-A parks in big cities to Low-A gems tucked into small towns, the growing crowds signal more than just a love for the game. It's a hunger for the experience, and that includes what's being served up in the stands. Of course, when it comes to ballpark eats, everyone has their go-to. For some, it's all about sticking with the classics, like an ice-cold beer in one hand and a perfectly charred hot dog in the other. But plenty of fans show up ready to explore the wilder side of concessions, chasing down deep-fried experiments, regional specialties, or outrageous sweets that practically beg to be photographed before the first bite. And this year, teams aren't holding back. Whether it's a six-foot-long monster dog stacked with pulled pork, mac and cheese, and jalapeños, a towering stack of loaded fried green tomatoes, or ice cream nachos drizzled with caramel and chocolate, MiLB food is going full throttle. Here's what's being served up at concession stands this summer. Augusta GreenJackets, SRP Park—Augusta, Georgia Loaded Fried Green Tomatoes Loaded Fried Green Tomatoes This tower of crispy fried green tomatoes is loaded like your favorite nachos—smoky bacon, melted cheese, and a tangy drizzle. St. Paul Saints, CHS Field—St. Paul, Minnesota The Land of 10,000 Calories Land-of-10000-Calories This six-foot-long monster dog is an edible spectacle, stacked with smoked pulled pork, creamy mac and cheese, crispy bacon, BBQ sauce, and spicy jalapeños, plus a mountain of signature fries, a side of jalapeño poppers, and four 20-ounce drinks to wash it all down. Designed to feed a squad (or one ambitious fan with no fear), it's part tailgate, part food dare, all legend in the making. Hub City Spartanburgers, Fifth Third Park—Spartanburg, South Carolina Deep Fried Pizza Deep Fried Pizza Oozy mozzarella and pepperoni are sealed inside golden, crispy dough and topped with a spoonful of marinara and a parmesan confetti. The Spartanburger The Spartanburger This stacked tribute to South Carolina is loaded with local beef, homemade pimento cheese, crispy fried green tomatoes, and onion crunch between the buns. It's a totally over-the-top treat. Midland RockHounds, Momentum Bank Ballpark—Midland, Texas Buffalo Chicken Fries Buffalo Chicken Fries Hot sauce lovers, this one's got your name on it. Spicy, crunchy chicken strips sit on a mountain of fries, cooled only slightly by a generous blue cheese drizzle. And in true Texas fashion, it's all served in a souvenir helmet. Baseball Blues Cocktail If summer had a flavor, it might taste like this: Malibu, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, and a splash of Sprite topped off with a cherry or orange slice for a tropical touch. It's bubbly, beachy, and dangerously sippable. Albuquerque Isotopes, Rio Grande Credit Union Field—Albuquerque, New Mexico The Ballpark Sandwich The Ballpark Sandwich A pretzel bun is the base for smoked brisket dressed in mustard sauce, hot dog "bacon" (yes, that's a thing), and a smattering of pickles, onions, and beer nuts. It's a mix of sweet, tangy, crunchy chaos. Ice Cream Nachos Ice Cream Nachos This is a fun twist on your traditional melted cheese-drenched nachos: cinnamon-sugar dusted wafers as "chips," scoops of soft-serve, chocolate and caramel sauces, sprinkles, and whipped cream. Birmingham Barons, Regions Field—Birmingham, Alabama The Dugout This cheesesteak is blanketed with cheese and served on a bed of crushed Doritos. Iowa Cubs, Principal Park—Des Moines, Iowa Chicago Dog (Windy City Night Only) This Windy City homage features mustard, relish, tomatoes, sport peppers, onions, celery salt, and a pickle spear on a poppy seed bun. It's everything you want in a classic, without booking a flight to O'Hare. Hickory Crawdads, LP Frans Stadium—Hickory, North Carolina Carolina Slaw Dog Carolina Slaw Dog Creamy coleslaw is the star here, adding cool crunch to a snappy sausage and taking a hot dog from simple to sublime. Memphis Redbirds, AutoZone Park—Memphis, Tennessee Memphis Dog Memphis Dog This supercharged hotdog is swaddled in bacon, slathered in Memphis-style barbecue sauce, and finished with a sprinkle of sharp cheddar and chopped onions. Columbus Clingstones, Synovus Park—Columbus, Georgia Peach Cobbler Custard Creamy vanilla custard meets warm, spiced peaches in a dessert that feels both nostalgic and decadent. Bonus: it's a collab with local favorite Whit's Custard. Lansing Lugnuts, Jackson Field—Lansing, Michigan Tater Tot Flight Tator Tot Flight Three styles of tots in one tray. Go classic, bacon-and-cheese-loaded, or smothered in a mystery sauce that changes by the night. It's like a choose-your-own-adventure for potatoes. Harrisburg Senators, FNB Field—Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Dutch Chicken and Waffles Crispy chicken tenders, fluffy waffles, and a choice of pepper gravy or hot honey. It's your brunch fave—ballpark-style—with just enough heat to wake you up after the seventh-inning stretch.

Aggie Heroics: Former Texas A&M outfielder walks off MiLB showdown

Aggie Heroics: Former Texas A&M outfielder walks off MiLB showdown Former Texas A&M Aggie Braden Montgomery continued to display his highlight-worthy abilities at the plate by driving a two-RBI walk-off double to secure the Chicago White Sox High-A affiliate Winston-Salem Dash a 5-4 victory on Sunday night. In April and May, the Madison, Mississippi, native has recorded 39 RBI in 42 contests. What better way to cap off the National Italian Beef Day celebration than a Montgomery game-winner in the bottom of the ninth inning? After transferring from Stanford in 2023, the former unanimous First-Team All-American decorated Blue Bell Park in Bryan-College Station, Texas, with 27 home runs and 85 RBI through 61 contests before suffering a season-ending injury. The switch hitter, who also happens to pitch, was then drafted No. 12 by the Boston Red Sox in the 2024 MLB Draft. As the No. 8-ranked player on MLB's Pipeline rankings, Montgomery expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to practice amongst a Texas A&M roster filled with left-handed pitchers. "Something that I was really excited to come to A&M and experience was, we've got a lot of lefties. So in all of our inner squads, I was able to take a lot of right-handed at-bats. It was really helpful to see all of those pitchers in preparation for the season. And at that time, I was in a really good spot right-handed, so I'm excited to see more of that," Montgomer told the MLB Pipeline Podcast in July last year. Montgomery is now tearing up the minor leagues with incredible outings like Sunday night's walk-off victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades. Since entering the MiLB this year, Montgomery has recorded 47 hits, including seven homers. His next appearance on the diamond will take place on Tuesday, May 27, as the Dash begin a six-game road stretch against the Hub City Spartan Burgers. Minnesota Twins Lose Two Superstars in One Ugly Outfield Collision

Worried that the Minnesota Twins winning streak was going to finally end at 10, on Thursday afternoon against the Orioles? Well, our favorite baseball team squashed a lot of those concerns when they jumped out to an early lead in Baltimore, thanks to homeruns by DaShawn Keirsey Jr and Byron Buxton. Buxton's 10th homer of the season — a solo-shot that raised his 2025 batting average to .261 and his OPS to .834 — came in the top of the third inning. It was just the latest in a run of unbelievable offense provided by the now 31-year-old former No. 1 overall MiLB prospect. Byron Buxton is off to one of the best and healthiest starts of his oft-injured 11-year MLB career, It's no coincidence Buck's hot streak aligns with that of the Twins. We've seen that throughout his time in Minnesota, as well. Minnesota Twins lose Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa during ugly collision Of course, just when things start going well for the Minnesota Twins, we are quickly reminded just how fast those good vibes can be swiped from underneath us. Example No. 35,491,561,544 came Thursday afternoon, when the former Platinum Glove winner called for a shallow fly ball way too late, causing a brutal rear-end style collision with fellow 2012 top two pick and Platinum Glove teammate Carlos Correa. This collision looks way more like a two-ton truck barreling down I-94 when it slams into a similar sized vehicle that had just come to a complete stop. Sunglasses and hats were flying, both superstars wound up on the ground… and only one, Buxton, got up initially. Correa immediately left the game. We do not yet know the extent of either player's injuries, at this point. But according to the latest update by voice Cory Provus, which came during the bottom of the eighth inning this afternoon, both players have been placed in concussion protocol. Man, if the Minnesota Twins could choose two guys to bubble wrap during a season, they'd be Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton. On Thursday, they lost both in one hard-to-watch moment. Related Headlines
