TCS gives out variable pay! Over 70% employees to get 100% variable; no decision yet on salary hikes
TCS variable pay: In good news for a majority of its employees, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT services firm, will give 100% variable pay out to around 70% of its staff for the April to June quarter.
The compensation for remaining staff members will be decided by their business units' performance metrics.
Although quarterly variable payments have been consistently distributed, the organisation is yet to finalise its annual salary hike policy. This delay comes amidst challenging economic conditions, resulting in the company experiencing revenue decline in dollar terms for three consecutive quarters.
TCS Variable Pay
TCS has verified the disbursement of variable compensation. A company representative told ET that the eligibility requirements remain "in line with our standard practice across quarters".
In an email communication to staff last week, chief human resources officer Milind Lakkad reportedly said, "All employees up to C2 grade (or equivalent grades) covered under the QVA plan will receive 100% of the Quarterly Variable Allowance (QVA).

The individual pay-out for the C3 grade and above may vary, depending on business performance."
At TCS, the hierarchical structure begins with Y grade for trainees, progressing to C1 for systems engineers, followed by C2, C3 – A&B, C4, C5, and culminates with CXOs. Staff members holding C3 positions and above are generally considered senior personnel.
The leading IT services provider increased its workforce by 5,060 people during the quarter ending June, bringing its total employee strength to approximately 613,000.
The TCS chief executive K Krithivasan spoke of ongoing challenges in Q1 in last week's earnings announcement, highlighting the persistent and heightened delays in decision-making and project initiations.
He noted that global business operations faced disruptions stemming from conflicts, economic instability and supply chain complications.
For software service providers, the ability to drive growth significantly depends on discretionary technology investments from their clients.
Krithivasan expressed that whilst discretionary expenditure remains low across various sectors, he anticipates a recovery once the broader economic landscape becomes more definitive.

FRP payable only on sugar recovery for particular season: Centre to Maha mills
Kolhapur: Centre has clarified that the fair and remunerative price (FRP) of sugar cane for a given season would be determined based on the sugar recovery rate of that specific season, and not the previous one. The ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution released a circular on July 10, clarifying the FRP calculation for sugar cane. It was in response to a query from the Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Federation Limited, which had written to the ministry on July 3. The sugar recovery rate measures the amount of sugar extracted from a tonne of sugar cane. Centre sets the FRP for each sugar season based on the commission for agriculture costs and prices (CACP) recommendations. Typically, FRP is announced for a base recovery rate of 10.25%, with incremental payments for higher recovery rates. However, sugar millers had been paying FRP based on the previous year's recovery rate, rather than the actual rate for the current season. Sanjay Khatal, MD of the Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Federation Limited, said it was a historical mistake that was rectified now for the benefit of the sector. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo "We had sought a clarification on whether to calculate FRP based on the sugar recovery rate for the previous year or the ongoing season, and Centre has provided its clarification. Now, the mills will have to pay the base FRP, which is calculated as per the average FRP of a particular region," he said. Khatal said, "The sugar recovery rate at the end of the season should, however, be the basis for further payment if applicable. The over and above FRP amount will be paid as a premium to the farmers at the end of the season." According to Khatal, sugar millers do pay the FRP based on the base recovery rate, but for higher recovery rates, they can pay the additional amount in one or two installments, rather than upfront. Vijay Autade, sugar industry expert, said the Centre's circular would add to the confusion with no clarity on how FRP would be paid before the end of the season, considering the sugar recovery rate for that specific season. "It is okay to pay FRP based on sugar recovery rate for the current season, but the mechanism is not clear. There is implied meaning that the farmers will get the price for the sugar cane in multiple installments," he said. Farmers' leader Raju Shetti alleged that govt was working in the interest of the millers. "Farmers grow sugar cane for over a year and wait for months for the sugar cane season to end to get the money." Mills owe Rs 138cr to farmers in FRP dues Twenty-eight sugar mills, most of which are from Solapur district, have owe Rs 138 crore in FRP dues to farmers for the 2024-25 sugar cane crushing season, which ended two months ago, data accessed from the sugar commissioner's office showed on Tuesday. The sugar commissioner's office has issued notices to recover FRP dues from the mills. As many as 200 sugar mills from Maharashtra crushed 854 lakh tonnes of sugar cane during the season, during which the mills paid Rs 24,424 crore to the farmers in FRP.

HC clears Colaba jetty after weighing balance between progress and preservation
Mumbai: Bombay high court on Tuesday upheld the state govt and Maharashtra Maritime Board's (MMB) decision to construct a passenger jetty and terminal facilities near Radio Club, Colaba. "The pursuit of development is not an affront to the environment when it walks the careful path of sustainability guarded by regulations and reasons," said Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne. They gave the ruling after considering the material on record, expert opinions, statutory clearances, weighed the scales between progress and preservation and took into account the fact that the project stands fortified by statutory clearance. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai The verdict came on three petitions, including by Clean and Heritage Colaba Residents Association, challenging the decision of the state govt and the MMB to construct the jetty, as well as the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority clearance and traffic and heritage NOCs given to the project. The petitioners argued that the Gateway of India monument is a Grade I heritage structure, and the promenade comes within 100 metres of the precinct. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo They said the magnitude of the project includes a 64,000 sq ft terminal with a cafe, shops, open amphitheatre and VIP lounge and a tennis racket shaped jetty that will extend over half a kilometre into the sea. When operational, it would dwarf the area and dominate the sea-front. It will congest the already crowded area. The judges noted that the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee recorded that the jetty "would not obstruct the view of the surrounding heritage structures". There is no "infirmity" in the heritage NOC. Traffic police NOC was valid as it considered the jetty's parking facility will decongest P J Ramchandani Road. The judges said the project meets the principle of sustainable development where the proposed development is carried out with minimal damage to the environment. It envisages construction "involving virtually no reclamation of the sea". The MCZMA applied its mind to all environment concerns before giving clearances. The petitioners said a 2000 report that recommended Ferry Wharf for passenger jetty was not disclosed. The judges said the purpose then was to connect Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. The present jetty is to decongest the existing 5 small jetties used by around 35 lakh passengers. MCZMA was not supposed to consider an alternative site. They said the project's dominant purpose is to provide facilities to the passengers for embarkation and disembarkation. Other facilities like amphitheatre, restaurant, cafe are only ancillary to it and "have to be used to make the jetty functional". The judges were "conscious" that there is no sewage treatment plant envisaged in the project and "functioning of the facilities should not be detrimental to the environment. " Therefore, having ascertained from advocate general Birendra Saraf, they issued directions. MMB shall ensure that the amphitheatre shall be used only as a sitting area for passengers and not "as a place of entertainment in any manner". Also, the proposed restaurant/ cafe shall only be used "to provide water and packed food products to the passengers and shall not be used for providing dining facilities." After completing the project, the existing jetties at Gateway shall be discontinued in a phased manner as directed by the Indian Navy.
