AZ Alkmaar hat-trick hero eyes Hong Kong glory, Brighton knock out Aston Villa

Hat-trick hero Sem van Duijn said AZ Alkmaar positioned themselves as underdogs before outclassing Larne 3-0 to reach the HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens semi-finals in Hong Kong on Sunday.
Dutch maestros Alkmaar were among the pre-tournament favourites following their recent Uefa Youth League exploits, when they lost 1-0 to eventual champions Barcelona in the last four.
They were shocked 1-0 by hosts Football Club on the opening day of the Sevens, however, before scraping through their group with a decisive 3-1 victory over Leicester City.
After his treble booked a clash with Yokohama Marinos of Japan, Van Duijn, 21, acknowledged Alkmaar initially struggled to cope with the blistering Hong Kong heat.
'It's twice as hot as at home right now, but we've got used to it and we're ready to keep going,' he said.
'Larne won their pool and we were second, so we knew it'd be a tough match.'
Tempers flared on the field and on the sidelines as Northern Irish side Larne resorted to illegal means to try to neuter their technically superior opponents.

Hong Kong has ‘window of opportunity' for 2036 Olympics bid, working group says

The group behind a potentially audacious bid to bring the 2036 Olympics to Hong Kong said the IOC president's decision to revisit the bidding process 'created an important window of opportunity' for the city. On Friday, Kirsty Coventry announced she had paused the fast-tracking of a preferred bidder, a signature policy of predecessor Thomas Bach, in a concession to International Olympic Committee members who have wanted more say in decisions under new leadership. That was seen as not only stalling the momentum India was believed to have built as favourites to win hosting rights, but also opening the door to a Hong Kong-driven bid to bring an Olympics to China for a third time. A working group, comprised of business leaders and sports officials, has quietly been building support behind the scenes, with the intention of bidding to stage the Games in the Greater Bay Area. In a statement sent to the Post on Saturday, it said 'discussions to date have been extremely positive and, from our perspective, heading in the right direction'. Asia champ Alex Lau targets world rankings rise after 2-year top 40 breakthrough

New Asia squash champion Alex Lau Tsz-kwan said on Friday that he had his eyes on entering the world top 30, after finally breaking through a two-year 'bottleneck' at No 40. The Hongkonger has reached a career high on the rankings list after winning gold in Malaysia at the Asian Squash Championships last week, where he beat Qatar's Abdulla Al-Tamimi 3-0 in the final. And after training overseas, which he called 'finding the right direction for me', the 29-year-old said he expected to focus on competing in more World Series tournaments so he could chase ranking points. 'No 40 was like a bottleneck for me for almost two years, so reaching the 30s for the first time meant a lot to me,' Lau, who is now ranked 39th, said. 'Your ranking tells your consistency throughout the season; I felt I could reach a higher spot but got stuck instead. Other players might be able to play their strongest game whoever they play, but my game might work only on specific players.' Alex Lau (left) and Tomato Ho won their maiden regional individual titles at the Asian Squash Championships in Malaysia last week.
