You can play Switch 2 at Gamescom 2025 as Nintendo confirms attendance

Metro19-05-2025
After skipping last year's event, Nintendo has confirmed it will be attending Gamescom 2025, just two months after the Switch 2's launch.
Now that E3 is no more, Gamescom is the world's biggest gaming event, based on its size and visitor numbers, but one company was notably absent last year.
Nintendo skipped last year's event, held annually in Cologne, Germany, and while no explicit reason was given at the time, it was presumably so the company could prepare for the Switch 2's launch.
Nintendo has now confirmed it will return for Gamescom 2025, which takes place from August 20 until August 24.
The news was announced on Nintendo's German account on X. 'Mark your calendar in red,' the post reads. 'Nintendo will be back at Gamescom in 2025. We look forward to welcoming you to Cologne from August 20th to 24th!'
There are no details on what Nintendo will show, but it will likely focus on the Switch 2 line-up beyond its initial launch on June 5, 2025.
Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza will both be released by the time Gamescom 2025 rolls around, so it might be the place to showcase Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends Z-A, which are both slated for later this year, albeit without exact release dates. More Trending
Drag x Drive, aka the wheelchair basketball game, is also set to launch at some point in the summer, while Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Imprisonment and Kirby Air Riders both have vague 2025 release dates, so it's possible they could be playable too.
Neither Microsoft or Sony have announced whether they're attending Gamescom 2025, but the latter has skipped for the last several years. With Marathon and Ghost of Yōtei on the horizon though, it's possible Sony could make an appearance.
As usual, Gamescom 2025 will be preceded by Opening Night Live, hosted by Geoff Keighley, which serves as a starting presentation for the event with game announcements.
Before Gamescom, Keighley is set to host Summer Game Fest on Friday June 6, which will be followed by an Xbox showcase on Sunday, June 8.

New Nintendo Switch 2 bundle announced as console breaks another sales record

Mega Dragonite is the first new mega evolution in over a decade (The Pokémon Company) The Nintendo Switch 2 is being bundled with Pokémon Legends: Z-A, as the latest Pokémon Presents reveals new surprises. The Pokémon Company has held its latest Pokémon Presents showcase, and the results were strangely underwhelming. Anyone hoping for a Gen 10 tease, or a surprising new spin-off, will have come away disappointed, as it mostly featured only updates on mobile games and a new Pokémon Legends: Z-A trailer. It was not without a few surprises, but the most significant of the lot wasn't actually shared during the showcase: a new Nintendo Switch 2 bundle that'll be available for pre-order in less than 24 hours. The news was revealed on Nintendo's social media accounts, once the showcase wrapped, and as you can probably guess, it will include both the console and a copy of Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It will launch the same day as the game on October 16. Nintendo doesn't specify if the bundled game will be a physical or digital version, but it's almost certainly the latter, if the Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza bundles are anything to go by. Expert, exclusive gaming analysis Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. There's also no pricing at the moment, but with pre-orders opening tomorrow on July 23, you won't need to wait long to find out. Although we can estimate based on the prices of the other two Switch 2 bundles. While the Mario Kart World bundle costs £429.99, and thus saves money on the game itself, the Donkey Kong Bananza bundle is £454.98, which is exactly how much you'd spend if you bought the Switch 2 console and a digital copy of the game separately. Assuming Nintendo is handling the Pokémon Legends: Z-A bundle the same way, it would cost the same amount as the Donkey Kong one, since the Switch 2 version of the game is priced at £58.99. The Switch 1 version is cheaper at £49.99 and can be upgraded to the Switch 2 version, but with the additional fee, you'd only be saving £1. Every new announcement at Pokémon Presents July 22 A proper teaser for Pokémon's collaboration with Wallace & Gromit studio Aardman was shown, confirming the two companies are producing a stop-motion animated series called Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures Of Sirfetch'd & Pichu that will start in 2027 and is set in the UK-inspired Galar region from Pokémon Sword & Shield. A permanent outdoor attraction called PokéPark Kanto is scheduled to open in early 2026 in Japanese amusement park Yomiuriland. Exact details of what it entails are slim, but it's described as 'a space where pokémon will always be, and where people and pokémon can have fun together.' A new mobile app called Pokémon Friends is already available on Switch as well as the Apple and Google Play stores, and offers simple pokémon-themed puzzles that reward you with in-game plush toys you can use to decorate rooms with. A new trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A revealed some of the new characters you'll meet, as well as rogue mega evolutions, where certain wild pokémon are able to mega evolve without a trainer. It also confirmed the game's first new mega evolution – Mega Dragonite – and that pre-orders net you a Ralts that can later mega evolve to Mega Gardevoir. This announcement comes after it was reported by Japanese outlet Yomiuri that, according to data compiled by Famitsu, the Switch 2 has broken another sales record, pushing more than 1.5 million units in Japan one month after its June launch. If accurate, this would mean the Switch 2 is selling three times faster than its predecessor and has even outpaced the PlayStation 2, the best-selling console of all time, in its first month in Japan. What's more staggering is that, according to analyst Dr Serkan Toto, Famitsu's data doesn't include units sold directly by Nintendo, so the real sales figure is even higher. Nintendo itself has yet to formally share any sales data, but after it smashed records worldwide the company is likely to exceed its target of 15 million Switch 2s sold by the end of March 2026. ‘The Fantastic Four' film they won't let you see (and how to watch it)

'I want a Fantastic Four flick, and I don't want it good – I want it Tuesday!' With these immortal words, German producer Bernd Eichinger commissioned legendary independent filmmaker Roger Corman to make a film based on Marvel Comics' The Fantastic Four. The twist? It was never meant to be seen by the public. In the first issue of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's The Fantastic Four comic, published in November 1961, four astronauts – inventor Reed Richards, his scientist fiancée Susan Storm, her younger brother Johnny, and their friend Ben Grimm – were granted superpowers following exposure to an alien phenomenon during the first spaceflight of their experimental rocket. Richards was reborn as 'Mr. Fantastic', able to elongate any part of his body; Susan became 'The Invisible Girl' (self-explanatory); hot-headed Johnny could ignite himself into living flame, becoming 'The Human Torch'; most tragically, Ben's body took on stone-like properties, granting him superhuman strength and the nickname 'The Thing'. It was an instant success, but – Invisible Girl aside – the special effects required to bring such superpowers to the screen were not available to filmmakers until the late 1980s. It was then that Eichinger took an open-ended option to make a Fantastic Four film, on the proviso that it entered production by the end of 1992. In the meantime, Tim Burton's Batman became one of cinema's biggest ever box office and merchandising success stories, opening the doors to anyone with the rights to a hot superhero property. Eichinger hatched a plan as brilliant, cunning and diabolical as any the Fantastic Four's nemesis, Dr Doom, had ever dreamed up. By making an ultra-low-budget film, the producer could hold onto the rights, hoping that in the meantime, he would be able to set up a big deal at a major studio. If such a deal could not be made, the producer would still be left holding the negative of a Fantastic Four film, which could be released at a profit. Roger Corman, who – according to the title of his own autobiography – 'Made a Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime' was chosen to make the film, and Oley Sassone (Bloodfist III: Forced to Fight) was hired to direct. Principal photography began on Boxing Day 1992, just five days before the rights were due to expire. It lasted a mere four weeks. The producer hatched a plan as cunning and diabolical as any of Dr Doom's Alex Hyde-White and Rebecca Staab played Reed Richards and Susan Storm respectively; actor/stuntman Carl Ciarfalio (The Incredible Hulk Returns) donned a convincingly concrete costume to play Ben Grimm, while Jay Underwood burned his scalp and almost fried his hair off, dying his brown locks blond to play Johnny Storm. Lee had longed to see his self-styled 'World's Greatest Comic Book' on screen, but understandably had concerns about the $1.5 million budget – a fraction of Batman's $35 million price tag. 'I have a sentimental attachment to The Fantastic Four,' he said, 'and I was heartbroken to think it might appear only as a low-budget quickie'. Then, just days before its January 1994 premiere, it emerged that Eichinger had bought back the film's negative, intending to shelve it – permanently. 'I feel very, very sorry for the actors and the director and most of the people involved in it,' a disappointed Lee commented. Six months later, 20th Century Fox announced that it had secured the rights from Eichinger, hiring Home Alone and Mrs Doubtfire director Chris Columbus to direct a brand new $40 million movie, with real-life couple Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan tipped to star. Corman's budget-challenged yet well-meaning production would be relegated to fuzzy bootlegs sold at comic conventions and under the counters of video rental stores. Ironically, Columbus' film never happened, torpedoed by post- Batman superhero flops such as The Phantom and The Shadow. It would be another decade before Fox cashed in on the noughties success of The X-Men and Spider-Man by making a Fantastic Four film, with the then-unknown Chris Evans – Marvel's future Captain America – as Johnny Storm. A year before its 2005 release, moviegoers had marvelled at another family of superheroes, featuring super-strong inventor Mr Incredible and his wife, stretchy superhero Elastigirl, clearly a riff on the Fantastic Four. The success of The Incredibles did not doom the box office prospects of The Fantastic Four, however: it was as big a hit as The X-Men. But the 2007 sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer, was a flop and a third film failed to materialise. Now, as Marvel's own The Fantastic Four: First Steps towers over the summer box office like the shadow of Galactus, Roger Corman's 1994 version remains officially unreleased anywhere in the world.
