Mamdani Has Won the Primary. Now On to November.
We have a winner.
Hi, I'm Dean Chang, the editor running The New York Times's coverage of the mayoral primary. Welcome to the ninth and last edition of The Sprint. The last time I was involved in a limited-run series, viewership was so low that Bravo decided to run the last two episodes back to back on the same day.
In this edition, we'll examine some of the biggest reasons behind Zohran Mamdani's significant margin of victory in the Democratic primary, and look ahead to the general election in November.
A side note: As the primary ends, so does The Sprint. Could we be back in the fall? Stay tuned. For now, thanks for spending some time with us, including this bonus post-primary edition. (Take that, Bravo.)

Trump says he hasn't considered pardoning Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell
WASHINGTON − President Donald Trump said he hasn't considered pardoning Ghislaine Maxwell, an associate of Jeffrey Epstein who is serving 20 years in prison for conspiring to sexually abuse minors and who is meeting with federal prosecutors seeking more information about the case. Lawmakers and others have led a public outcry for more information about Epstein's clients, for more potential charges in the case. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche met July 24 and 25 with Maxwell to ask what more she could say, which led critics to question whether Trump would pardon her. 'It's something I haven't thought about,' Trump told reporters at the White House about a possible pardon before leaving the United States for a trip to Scotland. "I'm allowed to do it, but it's something I have not thought about." Rep. Dan Goldman, D-New York, suggested Blanche's effort was to protect Trump 'by tacitly floating a pardon for Maxwell in return for information that politically benefits President Trump.' Trump, when asked if he could trust what Maxwell says, called Blanche "a great lawyer" and "a great guy." Blanche previously served as Trump's personal lawyer in the New York criminal trial where Trump was convicted of falsifying business records, which he is appealing. "I certainly can't talk about pardons," Trump told reporters before leaving on a trip for Scotland. Epstein was federally charged with sexually trafficking minors and died by suicide while in detention in 2019 and long before any criminal trial. Trump attended parties with Epstein during the 1990s and repeatedly flew on his private jet but has distanced himself in the public uproar about whom Epstein's clients were. Lawmakers and others who followed the case have continued to push for the release of the investigative files in the case. Trump's name reportedly appears in the files, but he said he never went to Epstein's private island, where minors were allegedly sexually abused 'I have nothing to do with the guy,' Trump said. "I never never went to the island." Trump said reporters should focus instead on other political leaders and hedge fund managers who spent more time with Epstein. "I'll give you a list," Trump said. Peter Mandelson ‘called Jeffrey Epstein my best pal in birthday book message'
The UK's ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, reportedly called Jeffrey Epstein 'my best pal' in a book of messages collated for the notorious paedophile's birthday. The Labour party grandee was reportedly included in a section titled 'friends', alongside current US President Donald Trump and former president Bill Clinton. A letter from Lord Mandelson included photographs of whisky and a tropical island, and called Epstein 'my best pal', according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The leather-bound album was put together in 2003, before Epstein was first arrested in 2006. A spokesman for Mandelson declined to comment to the paper. Two years ago, Lord Mandelson said he 'very much regrets ever having been introduced to Epstein'. Earlier this year, he reacted with a foul-mouthed rant when pressed about his friendship with the disgraced financier. He also accused others of having an 'obsession' with his relationship with the convicted sex trafficker who died six years ago. He said: 'I regret ever meeting him or being introduced to him by his partner, Ghislaine Maxwell. I regret even more the hurt he caused to many young women.' He went on to add: 'I'm not going to go into this. It's an… obsession and frankly you can all f*** off. OK?' Maxwell is serving a 20-year jail sentence for recruiting and trafficking underage girls for Epstein. Mr Epstein was found dead in his prison cell in 2019, but the circumstances surrounding his death and his activities continue to make headlines. President Trump has faced anger from some of his Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters over his campaign promise to release the FBI files on the Epstein case. Conspiracy theorists have long demanded the release of a so-called 'client list' of celebrities, politicians, and other prominent associates, that some claim Epstein blackmailed over their alleged involvement in his trafficking ring. Earlier this week, the WSJ reported that Trump had sent a 50th birthday greeting in 2003, which was described as including a sexually suggestive drawing and a reference to 'secrets' both men shared. Trump has denied penning the letter or drawing and has never been accused of wrongdoing in connection with the Epstein case. He is suing the WSJ, its parent company and owner Rupert Murdoch for $10 billion. The messages were put together into a professionally bound birthday book. According to the WSJ, Clinton handwrote a single paragraph in the album, which read: 'It's reassuring isn't it, to have lasted as long, across all the years of learning and knowing, adventures and [illegible word], and also to have your childlike curiosity, the drive to make a difference and the solace of friends.'

U.S.-EU trade deal still up in the air as Trump jets off to Scotland
President Trump said on Friday there is a "50/50 chance, maybe less than that" of his administration striking a trade deal with the European Union ahead of a looming deadline next week. Mr. Trump, who made the comments before he left for a four-day visit to Scotland, comes ahead of the White House's Aug. 1 deadline for striking trade agreements with the the EU and other nations. If the US and EU fail to reach a deal, the president has threatened to impose a 30% tariff on imports from the trading bloc's 27 member countries. Dozens of other nations also face higher tariff rates starting Aug. 1, except for those that have already done a deal before the deadline. The U.S. has recently announced the outlines of trade deals with Japan, China, Indonesia, the Philippines and U.K., though with many details still remaining to be finalized. This is breaking news and will be Associated Press contributed to this report.
