How an off night for QB Dru Brown played into the Ottawa Redblacks' fifth loss of CFL season

Article content
The normally consistent Dru Brown picked a bad time to have his worst half of football as the Ottawa Redblacks' starting quarterback Saturday night in Hamilton.

It was more than just the two interceptions he underthrew into the hands of Tiger-Cats defensive back Jamal Peters in quarters three and four — the second of which was particularly untimely as it came at the Ottawa 43 and on the first play after a Kalil Pimpleton 105-yard punt return for a touchdown was wiped out by an illegal block penalty when Ottawa was in front 20-13 with a little more than 13 minutes left in the game.

While the Redblacks held the Tiger-Cats to a field goal off that turnover, they did relinquish the lead they had held since scoring on their opening drive when a roughing the passer penalty moved the ball from the Redblacks' 30 to their 15, setting the stage for a Kenny Lawler TD catch just three snaps later.

The puzzling decision to put William Stanback in place for his first kick return since 2018 backfired when the big running back failed to make a clean catch of Marc Liegghio's offering. Stanback had to retreat to pick up the loose ball, then could only advance it 12 yards to the Ottawa 19.

That's when Brown's play became uncharacteristic beyond his first two interceptions of the season.

Entering the game with a CFL-best 77.4 completion percentage, he connected on just one of five passes, and even that one would have landed on the ground had Justin Hardy not made a great grab.

Of the four misfires, the first was intended for rookie Keelan White and the other three were headed towards Eugene Lewis, who wound up with seven catches for 128 yards but should have had better numbers considering he was targeted 14 times.

Brown wound up completing 24 of 38 passes (63.2 per cent) for 283 yards, but was only 11-of-19 (57.8 per cent) for 146 yards in the second half.

'It's tough to lead most of (the game) and then not be able to execute at the end,' he told TSN1200's A.J. Jakubec, before addressing the interceptions. 'If stuff like that happens in the second quarter, it kind of blows over. But there's certain times where you've got to be really focused on what your job is. I think even before the last one, we had an opportunity to get the ball out on the perimeter, and I could have thrown a more catchable (pass) so (the receiver) could get north versus someone outside being involved. So I've look at all those things.'

Explaining the CFL's weather protocol after Roughriders' postponement

On Friday night, the Saskatchewan Roughriders were scheduled to take on the Calgary Stampeders in Week 6 of the 2025 CFL season. Article content However, due to wildfire smoke blanketing the air around Regina's Mosaic Stadium, the contest was postponed — following a nearly four-hour delay — until Saturday at 2 p.m. after the air quality health index (AQHI) didn't meet the CFL's official guidelines to play. Article content Article content Article content Under the CFL's official weather protocol, games can't be played when the AQHI is eight or above. However, the CFL doesn't currently have anything in their weather protocol surrounding delays due to wildfire smoke before the game starts, which is something that will likely be addressed in the coming week — before the situation happens again. Article content The lack of clarity surrounding the situation on Friday left fans in attendance and players in the locker room wondering when the game could potentially get underway. The game was then officially postponed at 10:45 p.m. Article content 'That sucked. It wasn't fun,' Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris said after the teams played on Saturday. 'We're sitting there and we're trying to figure out what the protocols are. Article content 'They can only delay it three hours, but that pertains only to lightning. And then it was like, 'OK, well now we've got this mini-game that we play before (the next meeting). You're trying to figure it out. Article content 'I always tell people, there's a reason you sign a tenant agreement when you rent a house, it's because people have things happen. Article content 'And now this will probably be something in the (collective bargaining agreement) that we'll have to address because that was not fun … We were sitting in the locker room since 5 p.m. and we're talking about teeing it up at 11:15, it's like, 'Hey, this is probably a player safety issue where we're sitting in the locker room for six hours and then go out and warm up for 20 minutes and play and be done at 2:15 in the morning.' Article content Article content 'That doesn't make a lot of sense, right? And so, I'm sure the league will do a great job responding in terms of creating a creating a protocol and an answer for us as you'd expect a very professional league (to do).' Article content In the CFL's current weather protocol, the only guideline surrounding wildfire smoke is that players cannot take to the field for warm-ups or a game if the air quality health index is eight or above. Each stadium is equipped with multiple air quality sensors that measure real-time data and any activity will be halted or not allowed to start like on Friday night.

Lions pounce on Elks 32-14 for second straight win

Ottawa Redblacks' Adarius Pickett (right) tackles Edmonton Elks' quarterback Tre Ford (2) during second half CFL action in Edmonton, on Sunday July 6, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jason Franson The B.C. Lions looked like a team in complete control on Sunday. Nathan Rourke passed for 345 yards and two touchdowns as the Lions won the latest clash of the Canadian quarterbacks, emerging with an easy 32-14 victory over the Edmonton Elks on Sunday. 'We did some good things,' Rourke said. 'We definitely need to finish drives a little bit better, but I think we did a really good job really giving it to them in the run game, having some long times of possession and really putting some drives together, that was good to see. 'It's good to be playing good football and it's also good not to have played our best football yet.' James Butler also rushed for a career-high 172 yards and a touchdown for the Lions (3-3), who have won two straight. 'I felt like I could have had more,' Butler chuckled. 'We were talking all week about putting four quarters together. We've had slow starts. I thought we got out fast in this game and kept on pushing.' Quarterback Tre Ford passed for only 34 yards as Edmonton was held to just 160 yards in net offence on the night, much of that coming when the game was already out of reach. 'It was a tough game,' Ford said. 'Obviously we got beat up and a lot of that was my fault. There was just a lot of missed throws today. It just sucks because I thought I was seeing the field really well. 'It just wasn't our day.' The Elks dropped to 1-4. There was no scoring until late in the opening quarter when Sean Whyte nailed a 33-yard field goal. The Lions made it 10-0 five minutes into the second quarter when Rourke completed a short pass to Jevon Cottoy and he danced out of the clutches of a defender and dove into the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown. Edmonton caught a break when a Rourke pass went off a helmet on the line and was caught by defensive lineman Jake Ceresna, who promptly fumbled it before teammate Tyrell Ford dropped on it on the B.C. 19. It would eventually lead to a one-yard TD plunge by backup quarterback Cody Fajardo. The Lions came roaring back to restore their 10-point lead with two minutes left in the first half as Butler powered his way through for a 15-yard rushing TD. B.C. looked to have extended its lead on a massive 92-yard punt return touchdown by Seven McGee, but the play was nullified on an illegal block call. With just eight seconds left in the second quarter, however, Rourke completed a seven-yard TD pass to Stanley Berryhill III to take a 24-7 lead into halftime. In their first five games this season, the Lions had managed only three points in the first quarter and had been outscored a combined 72-32 in the opening half. 'Early execution was key for us and we've been lacking that the last number of weeks,' said Lions head coach Buck Pierce. 'So, to be able to come out and start a little faster was good to see.' After gaining two points on a safety on Edmonton's previous possession, Whyte kicked a 36-yard field goal with 3:24 remaining in the third. Whyte added a 31-yard field goal with five minutes left in the fourth. Fajardo replaced Ford at QB late in the fourth and completed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Kurleigh Gittens Jr. Notes It was the second game this season featuring a pair of Canadian starting quarterbacks, as the first game for both squads this season also had Ford going against Rourke, with the Lions winning that encounter 31-14. Before this season, the last time there was an all-Canadian quarterback matchup also featured these same two teams, taking place way back in August 1968 (the Lions' Pete Ohler against Edmonton's Frank Cosentino). … The two teams will meet a third time on Oct. 17 in Vancouver, the second-last week of the regular season … Ceresna suffered a leg injury in the third and was carted off the field. Up next Lions: Host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday, July 19. Elks: Visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday, July 25. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 13, 2025. Shane Jones, The Canadian Press
