Assam: 132 persons apprehended for alleged illegal cattle slaughter, unauthorised sale of beef

The Assam Police apprehended 132 persons under the state's Cattle Preservation Act on Tuesday for alleged illegal cattle slaughter and unauthorised sale of beef in eateries.
A total of 112 eateries were searched during the day and 1,084 kg of meat, which the police suspect is beef, was seized, Assam Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh told Scroll.
While consumption of beef is not illegal in the state, the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, bans its slaughter and sale in areas predominantly inhabited by Hindu, Jain and Sikh communities or in areas that fall within a 5 km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery), or other religious institutions belonging to Hindu religion or any other institution or area as 'may be prescribed by the competent authority'. It also places tight restrictions on cattle transportation.
On Tuesday, a suo-motu drive was initiated in the state to check reported incidents of illegal cattle slaughter and sale of beef in restaurants without authorisation, PTI quoted Kumar as saying.
'The main intention of the drive is to stop violation of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act,' Kumar told the news agency.
In December, public consumption of beef, including at restaurants and community gatherings, was banned by the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state. A legislation or legislative amendment to this end has not been passed yet.
The crackdown on Tuesday came against the backdrop of more than 150 persons being arrested in Dhubri after animal remains alleged to be of a cow were recovered near a Hindu temple, The Indian Express reported.

Bengaluru Stampede: RCB in major trouble after BCCI Ombudsman orders KSCA, IPL champions to file written submissions

New-crowned Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have landed in further trouble after BCCI Ombudsman-cum-Ethics Officer Justice (Retd) Arun Mishra directed the franchise, along with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), to file written submissions over gross negligence during the team's victory celebrations in Bengaluru, which led to the death of 11 people. The Ombudsman has granted RCB and KSCA four weeks to respond, following an official complaint filed by IPS officer Vikas Kumar. PTI is in possession of a copy of the Ombudsman's directive. The complainant has also urged the Ombudsman to bar the current owners from selling the franchise until the investigation into the tragedy is complete. "Looking at the gravity of the incident, it is considered appropriate that the Karnataka (State) Cricket Association, as well as the concerned franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore be asked to submit their written replied to the complaint," Justice Mishra wrote in his directive. 'This complaint has been filed in relation to the unfortunate stampede at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on 04.06.2025. Complaint alleges gross negligence and violation of safety norms by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise,' the directive continued. "Complainant submits that accountability must be fixed. Prayer has been made for the suspension of the RCB franchise and for invalidating ongoing sale negotiations." Justice (Retired) Mishra in his directive also mentioned that complainant Kumar would get 10 days time to give a rejoinder to the respondents. 'Let the KSCA and RCB file their respective written replies to the complaint within four weeks, with copy to the complainant as well. Showing cause why the reliefs prayed for and specified in rules be not granted. Rejoinder if any may be filed within 10 days thereafter with copy to the respondents.' One of the possible reasons for seeking a written explanation from RCB could be the growing speculation within IPL circles that the franchise is considering a sale, with the current owners allegedly attempting to distance themselves from the recent tragedy. "Apprehension has been expressed that the franchise may be attempting to distance itself from accountability and possibly offload ownership to avoid potential consequences. In the meantime, status quo be maintained," it stated. Recently the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) also deemed RCB responsible for the massive crowd gathering that led to the death of 11 fans including women and children. The Tribunal had also quashed the Karnataka government's suspension order against senior IPS officer Kumar, who faced the action in the wake of a fatal stampede. Kumar had subsequently challenged the decision of the Karnataka State government.

'Digvijaya calls Hafiz 'sahab', finds communalism in Kanwar Yatra': BJP's Sudhanshu Trivedi

New Delhi: Political mercury soared over remarks made by senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh and Samajwadi Party leader ST Hasan on the annual Kanwar Yatra, prompting a sharp counterattack from the BJP. Addressing the media, BJP MP and national spokesperson Dr Sudhanshu Trivedi accused both leaders of spreading an anti-Hindu narrative and attempting to defame a long-standing spiritual tradition. Sudhanshu Trivedi said the statements made by both Singh and Hasan reflect the same ideological framework that has repeatedly opposed Hindu traditions. He alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's participation in foreign conferences like 'Dismantling Global Hindutva' and events aimed at 'eradicating Sanatan Dharma' in Chennai stems from this mindset. 'Digvijaya Singh sees Zakir Naik as a 'messenger of peace,' refers to Osama bin Laden as 'Osama ji,' and calls Hafiz Saeed 'Hafiz Sahab'. But when it comes to the Kanwar Yatra, he suddenly finds communalism in it,' Trivedi said. He questioned ST Hasan's alignment with groups allegedly concealing their identity. 'Why does he stand with people who hide their names and religious affiliation?' Trivedi asked. Continuing his attack, the BJP leader remarked that the Congress is so consumed by anti-Modi sentiment that its leaders are unable to differentiate between truth and misinformation. 'This is the result of being gripped by a distorted 'Modi-Virodhi' mindset,' he said, adding that such an obsession leads to a poor understanding of basic facts. Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh had earlier said that while there is no objection to state governments facilitating the yatra, trouble arises when such religious events are allegedly used to spread hatred. 'In a civilised society, the spread of hatred cannot be justified,' he stated. Former MP ST Hasan had also alleged that during the Kanwar Yatra in Uttarakhand, some Hindu groups were reportedly questioning the religious identity of hotel staff and local shopkeepers. 'Asking people for their names or making them undress to confirm their religion is a form of terrorism,' Hasan said. He compared the alleged incidents to past terrorist acts where victims were targeted based on their religion, referring to the Pahalgam massacre. Trivedi also took a jibe at former police officer and Congress leader Ajoy Kumar, accusing him of lacking basic knowledge about India's geography. 'How can someone who served in the police force be unaware of India's northeastern region unless blinded by political bias?' he said. Addressing a press conference, Kumar, who is a former MP from Jamshedpur, had talked about India's "deteriorating relations" with neighbouring countries and blamed the BJP-led government at the Centre for the situation. He had cited examples of Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and ended up naming 'Sikkim' as well. Expressing surprise, the BJP spokesperson said it is ironic that the Congress—under whose regime the Emergency was imposed—now lectures on democratic values. 'They've forgotten that the darkest phase of Indian democracy happened under Indira Gandhi,' he stated. He asked the Congress to remove their 'anti-Modi lens' and look at the true picture of the country. 'Only then will they be able to see the real map and face of the nation,' he added.
